One of the best places for bird watching is San Juan Capistrano. It is not far from San Diego. Thousands of people go to visit this town. It is as old as the United States. The favorite day to be there is March 19. This is the day when the swallows return.
Swallows are small birds with beautiful. long tails. They fly every year from Argentina and always arrive on the same date. People wait all day to watch for them. First, they just see a few swallows. Then more of the birds arrive Soon the sky is full of them.
On October 23 the swallows leave San Juan Capistrano. They fly back to Argentina. When it is cold in California it is hot in Argentina. That is why these interesting birds live in two different countries. They like to be where the weather is warm.
Many Americans like to watch birds. In the eastern states, where the winters are very cold, the most popular bird is the robin. No one hears its happy song when the snow begins to fall in November.
