Mahoney chose a 79-year-old senior named Eleanor, who not only gave goods for the people at the pub where Mahoney worked but also volunteered at the local homeless shelter.Mahoney wanted to get to know Eleanor better, so she asked that they spent a day together—picking up fruits, getting their nails done, that kind of thing. “It was the first time in years that someone had made a day about her,” says the 30-year-old. “That focus made her shine.”Their shared experience got Mahoney thinking. How many other seniors might benefit from that kind of attention? And had some of those seniors delayed their dreams because they’d been busy caring for others? Chisholm, now 31, was equally interested in these questions, and together the pair set up their new charity: We Are Young, or WAY for short.WAY has since delivered on 38 dreams and counting—from a helicopter trip over a childhood blueberry-picking place to travelling to Toronto to watch a Blue Jays game. These dreams are to work out problems caused by the health and loneliness of seniors. 78-year-old Victor wanted to go to the beach—a dream he’d given up when it became too physically difficult to reach the sea. The team at WAY offered a boat for him and his son in the fall of 2021 so they could reach the sea and spend the day enjoying themselves on the beach.“If you lose the sense of purpose that having a passion (激情) can give you, your self-confidence goes down,” says Mahoney. “Now, Victor has got some of his self-confidence again—and his sense of humour. We want to show that anything is possible with the support of others.” “We want to create a movement that changes our whole society’s opinion and support for seniors,” says Mahoney. “That is the influence we’re trying to create.”4. How did Eleanor feel after spending a day with Mahoney?A. She was in shock. B. She was nervous.C. She was confused. D. She was in high spirits.5. Why did Mahoney and Chisholm set up WAY?A. To help seniors get better care.B. To make themselves become younger.C. To help seniors realize their delayed dreams.D. To realize the delayed dreams of their childhood.6. What might Victor think of WAY after the trip?A. It was a home for him.B. It would be well received.C It’s much better than before.D. It might be owned by his son.7. What can we know from Mahoney’s words?A. Seniors need more care.B. Self-confidence changes a person.C. Seniors have a passion for their life.D. The young will create a good influence.CScientists who study happiness know that being kind to others can improve happiness. Acts as simple as buying a cup of coffee for someone can better a person’s mood (心情), for example. Every day life affords many chances for such actions, yet people do not always make use of them.In a set of studies published online in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, Nick Epley, a behavioral scientist, and I examined a possible explanation. We found that people who perform random (随机的) acts of kindness do not always realize how much of an effect they are having on another person. People usually think little of how others value these acts.Across our investigations, several results came out. For one, both givers and receivers of the acts of kindness were in more positive moods than usual after these exchanges. For another, it was clear that givers undervalued (低估) their effect; receivers felt much better than the kind givers expected. The receivers also really recognized these acts as “bigger” than the people performing them did.At first, we studied acts of kindness done for familiar people, such as friends, classmates or family. But later we found that givers undervalued their positive effect on strangers as well. In one experiment, givers in a public park gave away hot chocolate to strangers on a cold winter’s day. Once again, the experience was more positive than the givers expected for the receivers. While the people giving the hot chocolate saw the act as unimportant, it really mattered to the receivers. Our findings suggest that what might seem small to the givers could matter a great deal to the receivers. Since these warm acts can promote our own mood and brighten the day of another person, why not choose kindness when we can?8. What do givers seldom think about?A. Comments about their acts.B. Effects of their acts on others.C. Scientists’ explanation.D. Taste of happiness.9. What does the underlined word “them” in paragraph 3 refer to?A. Investigations. B. Moods. C. Acts. D. Exchanges.10 Why does the author mention “gave away hot chocolate to strangers” in paragraph 4?A. To explain a rule. B. To prove a finding.C. To present a fact. D. To show a topic.11. What can be a suitable title for the text?A. Warm Acts Are Usually ValuedB. Warm Acts Are Necessary For PeopleC. Kindness Can Have Unexpectedly Positive ResultsD. Kindness Can Unexpectedly Brighten Our Own DayDWhen Mark Twain first set eves on Hawaii in 1866, he observed that wild cats were everywhere and all of them fat, lazy, and sound asleep. Nearly 160 years later, however, those cats that so delighted Twain are now widely seen as a threat to the islands.Cats were first brought to Hawaii by ship, where they fed on mice. As their number in their new home grew during the 19th century, birds started to disappear. At least 30 types of native birds went extinct between 1870 and 1930 because of cats, according to the US Geological Survey.Hawaiian cats don’t just threaten birds. Toxoplasmosis (弓形虫病) is a disease caused by cats, and then contaminates soil and water through their waste. A new study found that two dolphins died of toxoplasmosis. From these findings the authors suggest that at least 60 dolphins have died of the disease over the past 30 yearsThe great majority of the dolphins included in the study were killed by other means. But “if they do become infected (感染) with Toxoplasmosis, this study suggests that they die and they die quickly”, says Kristi West, one of the authors and director of the Health and Stranding Lab at the University of Hawaii. What can be done? The law that could have directed Hawaii Invasive Species Council to kill cats using poisoned (下了毒的) food didn’t pass in the state earlier this year. Animal-lovers use some medical methods to keep them from having baby cats. Ms West suggests that people have to stop deserting (抛弃) these poor cats. She says, “It’s not really a cat problem. It’s a human problem.”12. What’s the function of the first paragraph?A. To tell us Twain’s story.B. To introduce the topic.C. To give us an example of cats.D. To show cats are threatened.13. What does the underlined word “contaminates” mean in paragraph 3?A. Protects. B. Frees C. Keeps D. Pollutes14. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?A. Dolphins are easy to get infected.B. Dolphins are killed in other ways.C. Toxoplasmosis is dangerous to dolphins.D. Toxoplasmosis quickens death of dolphins15. What can we infer from the last paragraph?A. Humans should treat cats well.B. Cats are killed by poisoned food.C. A law has been passed in the state.D. Animal-lovers’ methods are helpful.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。全科免费下载公众号-《高中僧课堂》Last year I moved to the countryside, to a neighbourhood full of young families. ____16____ Without anyone really noticing, smart doorbells have quietly become very popular.Perhaps I shouldn’t be surprised.
