    Growing up, I was always fortunate to be around my grandfather’s well-cared garden. Not only was it a nice garden in the visual sense, but the vegetables and fruit that he grew in it were also often on the dinner table, so it was also a very practical garden. This was a result of the times. He and millions others grew up in difficult time during 1930s, in which vegetables grown in gardens helped people add their poor incomes.

    I had just been an admirer of the work done by him until quite recently, when I decided to turn my hand to growing some plants. Unlike my grandfather, I don’t have a large garden to do this. Like millions of other people, I only have a small balcony to conduct my planting activities, but that has not discouraged me in the slightest.

    It’s possible to make a nice “garden” even in the most limited space, but not everyone could be successful. I had already tried to grow some flowers, but it was a hopeless failure, so my attention and efforts then turned to something much more practical: vegetables. I decided to take the seeds of one little tomato and plant them in a number of pots. After several weeks, I was amazed by the results. I now have about 15 tomato plants on my balcony in different stages of growth.

    It’s a rewarding sight to see this greenery on my balcony. Not only does it look nice, it’s also a good feeling that I have made my own little contribution to nature. And in this day and age in which we have such fast-paced lives and depend on modern technology for so much, it’s very rewarding to be taking part in a practice which is as old as time itself, as plant life is the most basic and oldest “technology” on our planet. Even if you don’t consider yourself to have “green fingers”, it is something that’s well worth having a try of —— you could be amazed by the results.

    For years, learning to speak Cantonese was not that hard in San Francisco. It is a place where Cantonese speakers from South China have moved for over 150 years. But now, there is fear that the Cantonese language and culture might not survive present social changes. Cantonese is spoken by some 85 million people worldwide. In comparison, there are around 1 billion Mandarin (or Putonghua) speakers.

    In Britain, as in the U. S., most schools that offer Chinese usually teach Mandarin. As a result, many families are struggling to find ways to pass on their Cantonese language and culture. Ceci Pang runs classes for children at Rainbow Seeds Cantonese School in London. “Many parents want their kids to be able to communicate with their grandparents,” she said. “It’s just so hard here, there are so few learning resources and lots of parents get upset. That’s usually the point the parents come to me.”

    In China, there are Cantonese television programs as well as Cantonese announcements on public transport. In Hong Kong, however, Cantonese remains the city’s top language. It is used by 90 percent of the population according to an assistant professor at the Education University of Hong Kong.

    It is a different story in the U. S. The teaching of Cantonese has decreased somewhat, including in San Francisco, a city that has drawn many Cantonese speakers over the years. The San Francisco school system has Cantonese and Mandarin programs for younger students. But in high school, Mandarin is the only Chinese language available. This spring, some independent Chinese schools are helping to teach the language as Cantonese-speaking communities grow. Aleyda Poe has been managing the Cantonese kindergarten at Merit Chinese School in Plano, Texas, for more than 10 years. Poe put her two sons in the school so that they could learn about Cantonese language and culture. Now, she is helping other families do the same.

    A reentry capsule(太空舱)carrying the crew —— Chen Dong, Liu Yang and Cai Xuzhe —— touched down on Earth at the Dongfeng Landing Site in northwestern China’s Gobi Desert after flying nine hours.     When the spaceship is 10 kilometers above the ground, the three parachutes (降落伞) will open one after another. The size of the parachutes will expand from only several square meters to over 1, 000 square meters, gradually reducing the spaceship speed from 200 meters per second to seven meters per second, which protects astronauts from gravity force overload. “It’s like when we’re driving, we need to slow down gradually, ”said Rong Wei, chief designer of manned spaceship at the 5th Academy of Aerospace Science and Technology Group, At the same time, the engine will be ready for a soft landing.
