What qualities should a scientist have?
If you want to be a scientist, what qualities do you need? As far as I am concerned, there are several qualities you need to have.
First of all, creative thinking comes on top of the list, with which you can have a new perspective different from others. What’s more, it is persistence and patience that matter a lot, for scientists usually devote many years to inventions and discoveries. Last but not least, you are expected to have
courage to face challenges and failures. There is no royal road to science. Only by being courageous enough will you not be beaten by reality.
To put it in a nutshell, these are the most important qualities a scientist should have.
第二节 (满分 25 分)
The next morning, just on the day before Christmas, I noticed a familiar car pull up infront ofmy house. Out of the car came an old lady. I realized it was my grandma, whom I hadn’t seen since we’d met for lunch three months ago. She walked to my mother. “My honey, Kristil called me last night and I miss you so much,” Grandma whispered and hugged us tightly. Before we had time to think, she handed my mother some money and wished us to enjoy our Christmas. When she drove away, tears of gratitude were welling up in our eyes.
At this time, we couldn’t help but cry. On the freezing night, a stream of warmth flooded in my heart. Then the next day, with money in hand, Mom and I decided to head towards the shop to buy a Christmas tree. The wind still blowing and snow falling, we felt like a spring on the feet. On arriving at home, we began to decorate our Christmas tree, which shone like a diamond lighting up the room. Never had I anticipated that I would have a Christmas like this, unforgettable and promising. It injected power and expectation in my life to look forward to the future.

Text 1
M: Mary, I just want sugar, neither salt nor milk for the salad.
W: OK. Here you are.
Text 2
W: I’ll call you tonight to discuss our homework. How about eight o’clock? M: Could you make it a bit later? We’ll be having dinner at that time. Text 3
W: Your room is terrible. It’s the dirtiest room I’ve ever seen.
M: You can make it better. Then we can go out for dinner or watch a film. Text 4
W: I really want to thank you again for approving that raise.
M: No problem, Jenny. You deserve it because of all your hard work.
Text 5
M: Hey Rose, sorry to bother you! There’s something wrong with my computer, and I want to call Sam for help. Can you give me his new phone number?
W: Sure.
Text 6
W: Tomorrow is April 22nd.
M: Uh … Happy on your coming birthday!
W: No. It’s Earth Day. It’s a special day for everyone to think about how to help protect the earth’s environment.
M: So, what are you going to do? Plant a tree?
W: I bought a bus pass, so I can go to work by bus instead of driving my car.
M: Great! Where did you get a bus pass?
W: In the transportation office.
M: Oh, I think I will ride my bike as usual.
Text 7
M: Excuse me, what time is Flight 962 arriving?
W: It was to arrive at 10:35. But it has been delayed one hour.
M: Delayed? My wife is on that flight. What’s the matter? Engine trouble?
W: It’s nothing like that, sir. The plane was delayed in Chicago because of bad weather. But now it has cleared up and they are already on their way here to San Francisco. M: Did you say Chicago? My wife is flying home from Boston.
W: Flight 962 takes off in Boston but makes a scheduled stop in Chicago. M: Oh, I see. Sorry to get so anxious.
W: Relax, sir. Your wife will be here safe and sound in an hour.
Text 8
W: Are you fond of fruit?
M: Oh yes, I’m fond of all kinds of fruit. I like fresh juicy fruit best. They are wonderful.
W: Me, too. I would rather have fresh fruit than dried fruit. Sometimes I also buy dried fruit, though. My husband prefers dried fruit.
M: Really?
W: Yes. He says dried fruit is sweeter and tastes better. He has a sweet tooth, you know.
M: Of course. People have different tastes. Some people do prefer dried fruit. But nobody in my family eats it. They all love fresh juicy fruit, just as I do.
W: Sure. There is a nice fruit shop near here. Would you like to go and look around? M: I’m sorry. I didn’t realize it’s getting late. I have to get Arthur back home from school. Shall we make it another day?
W: OK.
Text 9
W: Have you finished the report on private schools?
M: Not yet. You know, I have two other articles to write and the editor has just sent me out to report on the big fire. I have got to go slow.
W: Yeah. Speaking of the big fire, I’d like to know the exact number of victims.
M: Unfortunately, 5 people died. 28 people are still in hospital. Among the dead, 2 are children.
W: Oh … Poor kids ! Didn’t they call the firefighters to help?
M: I’m not sure about that. They may have tried to put out the fire, but it was impossible to control it. With the help of the firefighters, the fire was finally brought under control, but had still caused great damage.
W: I’m wondering what caused the fire.
M: It was a cigarette end that burnt the carpet up when a man was sleeping soundly on the sofa. His son was playing with his cigarette end by the table. He threw the cigarette end on the carpet.
W: How could a kid get the cigarette !
M: That is the point. The man was drunk and he died in his dream.
Text 10
W: We celebrate Christmas in winter. We have known that Santa Claus sends gifts. But do you know how people celebrate their Christmas when their year-round climate is warm? They have no winters.
For instance, in California, it is warm all the year round. The Christmas traditions there may seem unusual to those used to more traditional images. In Santa Cruz, California, Santa Claus takes his gifts on a surfboard, wearing a red diving suit. As long as he comes carrying presents, Surfing Santa would probably be popular anywhere. In Australia, many young people would go to the beach, enjoying the warm weather with a beach barbecue and cold beer. In recent years, Bondi Beach has become a very popular place for visitors from foreign countries to gather and celebrate. It’s not uncommon for numbers to reach 40,000 on Christmas Day.
While in cooler areas, many young people simply see Christmas as a time to escape their immediate families and celebrate with friends.
