Venice is the “Queen” of the Adriatic Sea. Every year thousands of people from all over the world travel to Italy to visit the city. Do you know why they like to go there for a visit?
Venice is a very beautiful city. It is quite different from other cities in the world. There aren’t any roads or streets in the city. So there aren’t any cars or buses. There are many canals in the city. There is one big canal and one hundred and seventy-seven small canals. People move up and down the canals in boats to go to work, go shopping or visit their friends.
But Venice is sinking. It’s going down and the water is going up. In 2040 Venice will be under water. The Adriatic Sea will cover the city. The Venetians love their city and want to stay there. So they want to save Venice from the sea. They don’t want to leave.
How can they save Venice? They can build some strong huge walls and gates in the sea. The gates will close to keep too much water out. Thus Venice will not sink.
Qs: 1. Where is the city mentioned?
2. How do people travel in the city?
3. What’s happening to the city?

The Atlantic Ocean is the second largest ocean in the world. It’s located between the continents of North and South America, Europe, Africa and Antarctica. It’s also the youngest of the oceans and probably did not exist 100 million years ago. It covers about 20% of the Earth’s surface, with an area of 82,400,000 km2. It has an average depth of 3,926 m. The deepest spot is the Puerto Rico Trench which is 8,605 m. The farthest distance across the Atlantic occurs between the United States and North Africa and is 4,830 km. The shortest distance is between Senegal and Brazil at 2,575 km. The “S” shape of the Atlantic Ocean results in two separate basins with their own circulation systems. In the North Atlantic currents flow in a clockwise direction, while in the South Atlantic currents flow in a counter clockwise direction. The Atlantic is separated from the Arctic Ocean by a ridge that runs between Greenland and Scotland. There are few islands in the Atlantic. Most are concentrated around the Caribbean. Most of the islands are structurally part of continents.

Sure, chocolate is a delicious treat, and it’s a main part of some of our favourite desserts. But it’s not exactly a health food, so it should be enjoyed in moderation—right?
Well, it turns out that ____21____ (eat) chocolate might actually have a pretty significant health benefit. According to a recent research ____22____ (conduct) by five scientists in Italy, compounds found in chocolate, called flavanols (黄烷醇), can help improve cognitive (认知) performance. Yes, chocolate’s good for your brain.
The scientists, studying at the Universities of Rome and L’Aquila, ____23____ (record) research from 10 different studies. The studies assessed people’s performance on cognitive tests before and after eating cocoa or chocolate. The results ____24____ (tell): in nine out of the ten studies, there was a noticeable improvement after the subjects had eaten the chocolate. The scientists found improvements in “general cognition, attention, processing speed, and working memory.” Sounds pretty good to us!
And that’s not all. In subjects, especially women, ____25____ performed the tests while sleep-deprived, the flavanols helped fight the negative effects of lack of sleep. And there’s even better news. ____26____ (take) daily over periods ranging from five days to three months, chocolate can produce noticeable long-term improvements in cognition. Older adults, ____27____ memories were already declining, saw an especially great improvement. In fact, the scientists themselves ____28____ (claim) that, after doing this research, they’ve started eating chocolate every day!
Now, we’re not saying ____29____ you should start eating chocolate for breakfast, lunch, and dinner—it’s still high in sugar and low in nutrients. _____30_____ next time you find yourself tired out after a sleepless night, have some chocolate and let the flavanols work their magic. Go ahead, and take advantage of chocolate’s newfound brainpower with these delicious recipes.

Jane Austen was born in the English countryside more than 200 years ago. She lived a simple life. She seldom travelled. She never married and she died from illness when she was only 41.
However, people all over the world remember her. Why? It is because Jane Austen is the author of some of the best-loved novels in the English language. These novels include Emma, Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility and Persuasion.
Jane completed her last novel Persuasion in 1816 but it was not published until after her death. Persuasion is partly based on Jane’s naval brother.
Anne, the daughter of Sir Walter Elliot, falls in love with Captain Wentworth, a person of a lower social position. But she breaks off the engagement when persuaded by her friend Lady Russell that such a match is unworthy. The breakup produces in Anne a deep and long-lasting regret. Eight years later, Wentworth returns from sea a rich and successful captain. He finds Anne’s family on the edge of financial ruin. Anne and the captain rediscover their love and get married.
Jane Austen once compared her writing to painting on a little bit of ivory(象牙), two inches square. Readers of Persuasion will see that neither her skill of delicate, ironic(讽刺的) observations on social custom, love, and marriage nor her ability to apply a sharp focus to English manners and morals has abandoned her in her final finished work.
Persuasion has produced three film adaptations: a 1995 version starring Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds, a 2007 TV miniseries with Sally Hawkins and Rupert Penry-Jones, and a 1971 miniseries with Ann Firbank and Bryan Marshall.
People who are interested in Jane Austen can still visit many of the places she visited and lived. These places include the village of Steventon, although her family house is now gone. Many of the places Jane visited in Bath are still there. You can visit Jane Austen’s home in Chawton, where she did her best writing, and Winchester, where she died.

A. Never regret what you’ve chosen.

D. Her last novel Persuasion is considered her most successful one.

Ranchers(农场主) and environmental advocates haven’t always seen eye to eye, but the differences between the two aren’t as extreme any more, as more and more ranchers have come around to the understanding that taking good care of the land supports both economic stability and environmental health.
“For some, ranching was pursued in the past with an emphasis on raising beef at the expense of everything else,” says Bill Bryan of the Montana—based Rural Landscape Institute in a recent Christian Science Monitor. “As a matter of necessity, the old way of ranching is giving way to a new pattern. Raising animals for the dinner table isn’t an activity that has to be at odds with the environment.”
According to the nonprofit World Wildlife Fund (WWF), grazing (放牧)—when done right—is key to maintaining biological diversity and ecosystem health across the Northern Great Plains, across 183-million-acre expanse of rangelands spanning five US states and two Canadian provinces.
This vast landscape evolved in harmony with large herbivores (食草动物), such as bison and elk, and must be grazed in order to remain healthy, reports WWF, which works with hundreds of ranchers across the region as part of its Sustainable Ranching Initiative. “Without grazing, woody vegetation, such as juniper and cedar creeps in and kills plants that threatened species, such as grassland birds, need to survive.”
Not surprisingly, many of the ranchers that are following in the forebears’ footsteps have been using what we now call “sustainable ranching practices” for decades already. One example is rotational (轮流的) grazing, that is moving cattle herds more frequently to different pastures(牧场), so they don’t overgraze any one particular patch of land.
A newer “best practice” involves depositing a quarter to half inch of cattle wastes on grazed land to kick-start the soil chemistry below while also absorbing significant amounts of methane (沼气)—the most potent greenhouse gas—before it can head for the atmosphere. This technique is now becoming more commonplace as today’s ranchers care about reducing their carbon footprints like no generation before them.
63. In the first two paragraphs, what does the writer imply about the relationship in the past between ranchers and environmentalists?
A. They worked together to reduce the impact of grazing on the environment.
B. They didn’t look each other in the eyes when they meet.
C. They had great differences between each other.
D. They both agreed that raising animals for food benefits the environment.
64. The underlined phrase “be at odds with” (in Paragraph 2) most probably means ________ from the context.
A. be favourable to
B. be in disagreement with
C. stand a chance with
D. be unusual for
65. Which of the following is TRUE of grazing nowadays?
A. Many ranchers persist in prioritising raising cattle over anything else.
B. Grazing done in the right way helps biological diversity and ecosystem.
C. “Rotational grazing” has been recently employed to raise animals.
D. Grazing contributes to trees competing favourably with plants.
66. The writer mentioned the “best practice” to indicate ________.
A. grazing can be functional in the chemistry field
B. methane is another powerful greenhouse gas besides carbon dioxide
C. ranchers tend to remove their footprints as they are grazing
D. grazing has become more eco-friendly as time goes by
C 64. B 65. B 66. D

根据第一段中“Ranchers(农场主) and environmental advocates haven’t always seen eye to eye, but the differences between the two aren’t as extreme any more(牧场主和环保人士并不总是意见一致,但两者之间的差异不再那么极端。)”
根据前文“For some, ranching was pursued in the past with an emphasis on raising beef at the expense of everything else.( 对一些人来说,过去追求牧场的重点是饲养牛肉,不惜牺牲其他一切。)” 故划线词与B选项“be in disagreement with(不一致)”相一致。
根据第三段中“grazing (放牧)—when done right—is key to maintaining biological diversity and ecosystem health across the Northern Great Plains, across 183-million-acre expanse of rangelands spanning five US states and two Canadian provinces.( 在美国5个州和加拿大2个省的1.83亿英亩牧场上,放牧是维持整个北部大平原生物多样性和生态系统健康的关键。)”
根据最后一段最后一句“This technique is now becoming more commonplace as today’s ranchers care about reducing their carbon footprints like no generation before them.(这项技术现在变得越来越普遍,因为今天的牧场主们比以往任何一代都更关心减少他们的碳足迹。)”
Section C (8分)
Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
We all go through times when we feel we are not good enough. We might feel that way at work or in school or even as a parent. Here are some things to remember when you feel like that.
____67____ When I started my Ph.D, programme, I felt like the dumbest(最愚蠢的) person in every class. I couldn’t believe how many smart people were there, I didn’t know if I could measure up to their intelligence or compete in the same league with them. Years later, I found out that almost everyone felt this way, too.
You are unique and have special talents. If you can barely make Hamburger Helper, don’t compare yourself to your sister who is a chef. I’m sure you can do many things that she can’t. ____68____ You are you. You are not your sister.
You need to stop chasing perfection. It doesn’t exist. What’s perfect to me is not perfect to you. So if you think that there is some objective measurement of perfection and that the rest of the world is judging you against it, then you are wrong. ____69____
____70____ Our sense of self-worth is based in our thoughts. We have been programmed for many years with thoughts about ourselves. Messages come from our parents, our peers, teachers, the media and our own labels. But guess what? They are only thoughts. Just because you think these thoughts, it doesn’t make them true. One of my favourite sayings is, “Don’t believe a negative thought you think!”
A. You have the power to change others.
B. So concentrate on your own passions and talents.
C. You are not the only one who feels this way.
D. If you love yourself for who you are, other people will notice.
E. You need to change your thought patterns.
F. Most people are too worried about their own lack of perfection to judge you.
C 68. B 69. F 70. E
该空处于句首,应该为本段段旨,根据后文“Years later, I found out that almost everyone felt this way, too.(多年后,我发现几乎每个人都有这种感觉。)” C选项“You are not the only one who feels this way.(你不是唯一一个有这种感觉的人。)”
根据本段段旨“You are unique and have special talents. (你是独一无二的,有特殊的才能。)”可知,本段强调的是你具备别人不具备的特殊才能,同时根据前文的“If you can barely make Hamburger Helper, don’t compare yourself to your sister who is a chef. I’m sure you can do many things that she can’t.I’m sure you can do many things that she can’t. (如果你几乎不会做汉堡助手,不要拿自己和你的厨师姐姐相比。我相信你能做很多她做不到的事。)”可知,你具有别人不具备的能力和天赋。。B选项“So concentrate on your own passions and talents.(所以专注于你自己的激情和才能。)”
根据前文“So if you think that there is some objective measurement of perfection and that the rest of the world is judging you against it, then you are wrong. (所以,如果你认为完美有某种客观的衡量标准,而世界上的其他人都在用它来评判你,那你就错了。)”可知,如果你认为别人用完美的客观标准来评判你,则你是错误的。因此推断空处指出大部人的实际的做法。F选项“Most people are too worried about their own lack of perfection to judge you.(大多数人都太担心自己不够完美,所以不会去评判你。)”
根据后文“Messages come from our parents, our peers, teachers, the media and our own labels. But guess what? They are only thoughts. Just because you think these thoughts, it doesn’t make them true.(信息来自我们的父母、同学、老师、媒体和我们自己的标签。但你猜怎么着?它们仅是想法。仅仅因为你有这些想法,并不代表它们就是真的。)”可知,我们很多的信息来自于周围的人,有时候我们就是仅凭靠他人的信息来判断自己,可事实上这些想法并不一定就代表它们是真的。所以本段强调的是当感觉自己不好时,不要依靠他人的想法为评判,要改变这种思维模式,能够让自己跳出自己对自己的不真实的评判。E选项“You need to change your thought patterns.(你需要改变你的思维模式。)”
IV. Summary Writing (10分)
71. Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
Super Size Me
Fast food, otherwise known as junk food, is a huge passion for a large number of people across the Western world. But what would happen if you ate lots of junk food, every day? Would it seriously damage your health? These were the questions which led Morgan Spurlock, an independent film-maker, to do an experiment, which he made into a documentary film entitled Super Size Mc.
The main basis of his experiment was that Spurlock promised to cat three McDonald’s meals a day, every day, for a month. He could only eat food from McDonald’s and every time an employee asked if he would like to “super size” the meal, he had to agree. “Super sizing” refers in to fact that with this type of meal you get a considerable larger portion of everything.
Spurlock knew that by eating three McDonald’s meals a day, he would consume a lot of fat and great deal of salt and sugar in each meal - much more than he needed. Although Spurlock knew he would put on a bit of weight, and that this diet was unhealthy, he wasn’t quite prepared for just how unhealthy it turned out to be. The changes in this body were horrifying in the first week, he put on 4.5 kilos and by the end of the thirty days he had gained nearly 14 kilos, bringing his total weight to a massive 98kg.
Spurlock says “I’d love people to walk out of the movie and say, ‘Next time I’m not going to “super size”. Maybe I’m not going have any junk food at all. I’m going to sit down and eat dinner with my kids, with the TV off, so that we can eat healthy food, talk about what we’re eating and have a relationship with each other.” Food for though indeed.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When it comes to food choices, first of all, I prefer the vegetables grown in natural sunlight instead of in the heated greenhouses and those not stored in plastic containers because they are eco-friendly. We can also avoid the imported foods since more fuels are used and lots of emission is released when we transport food over long distances. What’s more, I will bring cloth bags for my next trip to the supermarket, because the plastic bags provided by the supermarket usually go to the rubbish dump since they are not recyclable. Last but not least, I’d eat less meat. Cows, sheep and pigs produce more gases that are bad for the environment such as methane when their food is digested.
In short, there will be greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere because of human’s daily activities. Therefore, we, as global citizens, should shoulder duties to protect our earth.
