My First Marathon(马拉松)
A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles(脚踝)was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead.
I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P. E. class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball. I didn't do either well. He later informed me that I was “not athletic(运动的)”.
The idea that I was “not athletic” stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills!
The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn't even find the finish line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.
Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces(鞋带) became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted!
At mile 3, I passed a sign: "GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!"
By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.
By mile 21, I was starving!
As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a. m. or questioned my expenses on running.
I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.
Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels(世俗标签), I can now call myself a “marathon winner”.

C. Failure is the mother of success.
D. One is never too old to learn.
C.
The traditional Chinese lunar calendar(农历)divides the year into 24 solar terms(节气). Start of Winter, the 19th solar term of the year, begins this year on Nov 7 and ends on Nov 21.
Start of Winter is the first solar term of winter, which means winter is coming and crops harvested in autumn should he stored up.
In ancient times, the Start of Winter was regarded as the beginning of winter, however, due to geographical factors, the actual winter time is different from place to place.
In fact, the Start of Winter is not the beginning of winter in terms of meteorology(气象学). The weather every year is different, so the beginning of winter could be quite different. And as China is very large, it starts at different times in different areas.
The beginnings of the four seasons were important festivals in ancient times. Before the Start of Winter, the ancient emperor would take a shower and have no more meat. On that day, the emperor would lead his officials to the countryside and “welcome the winter”.
People eat dumplings on the beginning of winter. Legend has it that in the late Eastern Han Dynasty, Zhang Zhongjing invented "Jiao Ear"(娇耳)to treat typhoid (伤寒)patients with ear frostbite(冻疮). He cooked mutton, hot peppers and herbs to drive out the cold and warm up the body. He put these materials into a dough skin and made them into an ear shape. Since then, people have learned to make the food which became known as "dumpling" or jiaozi. Today, in a different era(时代), there is still a saying that goes "Eat dumplings on Start of Winter Day, or your ears will be frostbitten. ”
28. Which of the following is right about Start of Winter?

D. It begins in different months in different places.

A. the Start of Winter
B. the change of weather
C. the important festival
D. the beginning of winter
30. What do the last two paragraphs mainly talk about?
A. Importance of Start of Winter.
B. Customs of Start of Winter.
C. Origin(起源)of Start of Winter.
D. Food eaten on Start of Winter.
31. Why do people eat dumplings on Start of Winter today?
A. Because dumplings can drive away typhoid.
B. Because they wish for good luck for themselves.
C. Because eating dumplings can warm up their ears.
D. Because they want to prevent the coming of winter.
D.
People who are at your age, like your classmates, are called peers. When they influence you on your decision or action, it's called peer pressure. All of us, at some point in our lives, have had to deal with peer pressure.
Recent studies have shown that peer pressure might cause an upside to you. It can make you reflect on your actions and make changes to your ways to become a better one. Observing others working hard to reach their goals will definitely encourage you to make a great effort to achieve something positive. When a teen knows that his teammates are practicing hard to become better players then it will directly affect his own performance. He will put in twice the time and energy to raise the level of his game and ensure he has a place on the team.
Having a group that brings positive peer pressure can also help you pick up healthy habits that can shape both your personality and your future. For example, when a child knows that some of his friends regularly read storybooks, he may get into the habit of reading. Seeing that his friends exercise daily, even he may take up the habit.
Just as some influences can be positive, some can be negative too. Peer pressure sometimes can make a dip in your self-confidence. Some kids give in to peer pressure because they want to be liked, or because they worry that others might make fun of them if they don't go along with the group. The idea that “everyone's doing it” can influence them to leave their better judgment behind. Besides, it is common for teenagers to think that nobody understands them and that the whole world is against them. The influence of peer pressure is such that it keeps them completely away from their family and friends who mean well. They just shut themselves off and fall into bad company.
It's likely that you've experienced the effect of peer pressure in different areas, ranging from the clothes you wear to the music you listen to. Sometimes it can be hard to resist(抵抗) and you may feel forced to do something you're uncomfortable with. So being aware of and carefully choosing the influence of peers that will lead to healthy and happy experiences is a lifelong process.
32. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. A quick reaction.
B. A positive effect.
C. A serious challenge.
D. A possible conflict.
33. According to Paragraph 4, peer pressure can get teenagers to ____.
A. become less self-confident
B. provide a model for teammates
C. make fun of their peers.
D. improve relationship with family members
34. What does the author advise us to do about peer pressure?
A. Just follow the trends ranging from clothes to music.
B. Accept it all because it is hard to resist.
C. Stay clear-minded and choose the influence wisely.
D. Fit into a healthy and happy lifestyle.
35. Which column(栏目)is the text probably taken from?
A. Science
B. People
C. Opinion
D. Entertainment

Naturally, I tried to pet it, but it ran away. Eventually, he started accepting food from me. Soon we were familiar with each other. I call him Choco. I can't live without him and he can't live without me.
One day, I was playing with Choco on the farm. I suddenly noticed two men standing just opposite our farm.
I kept on playing until dusk, when I sadly had to go back home. As soon as I walked in, Hardy, my dog, greeted us, wagging his tail.
That night, Choco probably went to his hut(小屋). I was at home and in bed, but my mind was still with the road and the men. Why did they come to watch us? I was worried. I couldn't fall asleep as usual.
The next morning, I could find Choco nowhere. I was sure the two men had taken MY CHOCO! My mind was uncontrollable as I followed Hardy in his search for Choco. We finally reached the place. It was a big house, with an open gate. Hardy jumped in, and I followed him. As was expected, Choco was there beyond the fence. I must rescue him. All of a sudden, a man and a black dog started chasing us, so we ran away.

【答案】May 10th, 2011
Dear Peter,
I’m glad to receive your letter asking for my advice on how to learn Chinese well. I am writing to offer some useful advice.
First, it is important to take a Chinese course, as you’ll be able to learn from the teacher systematically and practice regularly with your fellow students. Additionally, it also helps to watch TV and read books, newspapers and magazines in Chinese whenever possible. And it should be a good idea to learn and sing Chinese songs, because by doing so you’ll learn and remember Chinese words more easily. Eventually, I recommend you to make more Chinese friends. Communicating with them improve your spoken Chinese, and widen your knowledge about Chinese culture.
Hopefully, my suggestions will be beneficial. Best wishes.
Yours,

The man and tried to chase him in his direction. Just at the moment, I rushed to Choco, climbed over the fence, untied it, then ran in the opposite direction with Choco in my arms. About half an hour after I got home, my cousin came back, breathlessly. He told me he had been hiding in the jungle until the man found no one and went back. We burst into laughter.
