The results from the world's largest sleep study have shown that people who sleep on average between 7 to 8 hours per night perform better cognitively(认知地)than those who sleep less or more than this amount.
The world's largest sleep study was launched in June 2018 and within days more than 40000 people from the world participated in the online scientific investigationwhich included an in-depth questionnaire and a series of cognitive performance activities.
"We really wanted to capture the sleeping habits of people around the entire globe.Obviouslythere have been many smaller sleep studies of people in laboratories but we wanted to find out what sleep is like in the real world" says Adrian Owenwestern's researcher in Cognitive Neuroscience and Imaging."People who logged in gave us a lot of information about themselves. We had a fairly extensive questionnaire and they told us things like which medications they were onwhere they were in the world and what kind of education they'd received because these are all factors that might have contributed to some of the results."
More than half of all participants reported typically sleeping less than 6.3 hours per nightabout an hour less than the study's recommended amount. One shocking truth was that most participants who slept four hours or less performed as if they were almost nine years older.
Another surprising discovery was that sleep affected all adults equally. The amount of sleep associated with highly functional cognitive behavior was the same for everyoneregardless of age.Alsothe harm associated with too littleor too much sleep did not depend on the age of the participants.
"We found that the best amount of sleep to keep your brain performing its best is 7 to 8 hours every night. We also found that people that slept more than that amount were equally harmed as those who slept too little" says Conor WildOwen Lab Research Associate and the study's lead author.

A German study suggests that people who were too optimistic about their future actually faced greater risk of disability or death within 10 years than those pessimists who expected their future to be worse
The paperpublished this March in Psychology and Agingexamined health and welfare surveys from roughly 40000 Germans between ages 18 and 96The surveys were conducted every year from 1993 to 2003

Lang and his colleagues believed that people who were pessimistic about their future may be more careful about their actions than people who expected a rosy future
"Seeing a dark future may encourage positive evaluations of the actual self and may contribute to taking improved precautions (预防措施),"the authors wrote
Surprisinglycompared with those in poor health or who had low incomesrespondents who enjoyed good health or income were associated with expecting a greater declineAlsothe researchers said that higher income was related to a greater risk of disability
The authors of the study noted that there were limitations to their conclusionsIllnessmedical treatment and personal loss could also have driven health outcomes
Howeverthe researchers said a pattern was clear"We found that from early to late adulthoodindividuals adapt their expectations of future life satisfaction from optimisticto accurateto pessimistic"the authors concluded

    32.  According to the studywho made the most accurate prediction of their future life satisfaction ______

    A. Optimistic adults. B. Middle-aged adults.
    C. Adults in poor health. D. Adults of lower income.

    33.  Pessimism may be positive in some way because it causes people ______

    A. to fully enjoy their present life
    B. to estimate their contribution accurately
    C. to take measures against potential risks
    D. to value health more highly than wealth

    34.  How do people of higher income see their future ______

    A. They will earn less money.
    B. They will become pessimistic.
    C. They will suffer mental illness.
    D. They will have less time to enjoy life.
