17-year-old Dasia Taylor was named one of 40 finalists in the Regeneron Science Talent Search (STS), the nation’s most famous Science and math competition for high school seniors.
Dasia’s sutures (缝合线) work by changing color if the patients’ pH level changes, indicating an infection. pH is one of the most common parts of wound healing, Dasia said. It changes very quickly, so it’s one of the fastest ways to recognize infection.
So, she started experimenting with root vegetables. “I found that beet changed color at the perfect pH point,” says Taylor. “That’s perfect for an infected wound. And so, I was like, ‘Oh, okay. So beet is where it’s at’.” Beet provided the perfect dye for her invention, changing from bright red to dark purple when a surgical wound becomes infected. After more than a year of research, Taylor is working on getting her sutures patented.
She imagines these sutures being used in developing countries where they can save lives and money. “The goal of my project is to reduce the number of deadly surgical site infections in developing countries because developing countries suffer from the most number of deaths due to surgical site infections,” she said. “I was like there is no way that that should be happening. The equity part of my brain and all the work that I do around equity was like ‘That shouldn’t be happening. They should have the resources to save their citizens in their country.’ So, my goal is to work on that and make sure that it can actually discover those types of infections and stuff.” After graduation, Dasia hopes to attend Howard University, study political science and finally become a lawyer.
4. How can a patient quickly know if a wound is infected?
A. By observing the pH test paper.
B. Through the doctors’ examination.
C. By looking at sutures’ color changing.
D. By observing how the wound changes.
5. What did Dasia discover in her experiment?
A. Beet has the same pH level. B. Beet can change color at different times.
C. Beet therapy is good for wound healing. D. Beet can be used to help her with the invention.
6. What can we learn about Dasia?
A. She has won the invention patent.
B. She became the winner of the Regeneron STS.
C She made contributions to surgical infection recognition.
D. She helped save lots of lives and money in developing countries.
7. What will Dasia’s future career probably involve?
A. Medical and health work. B. Medical device development.
C. Something about the legal aid. D. Medical and science research.

Have you ever wanted to taste the delicious-looking food you see on cooking shows? Well, that wish has moved a step closer by a professor in Japan, who has developed a prototype (雏形) TV screen that you can lick (舔). The device called Taste the TV can create 10 different flavors (味道). With it, you just need to lick the screen if you want to taste the food on the display.
“The goal is to make it possible for people to have the experience of eating at a restaurant on the other side of the world, even while staying at home,” said professor Homei Miyashita from Meiji University in Tokyo.
“I’m thinking of making a platform where tastes from all over the world can be distributed as ‘taste content’. It’s the same as watching a movie or listening to a song that you like,” Miyashita added, “I hope people can, in the future, download and enjoy the flavors of the food from the restaurants they fancy, regardless of where they are.”
Meiji University student Yuki Hou, 22 , sampled a chocolate she saw on the screen. “It’s kind of like milk chocolate,” Hou said.
Miyashita said that he started to build the prototype in 2020. He hopes his work means that screen technology can move on from just having pictures and sound to a screen that satisfies the sense of taste too. He estimated that if a commercial version were to be created, it would only cost $875 to produce.
8. What is special about the screen?
A. It can be touched. B. It can be tasted.
C. It can be cleaned. D. It can be replaced.
9. Which word best describes Miyashita’s attitude to the screen?
A. Uncaring. B. Optimistic. C. Suspicious. D. Conservative.
10. What is the screen intended for?
A. Improving people’s lives. B. Reducing the cost of TV shows.
C. Satisfying people’s sense of taste. D. Amusing people in a creative way.
11. Where is this text most likely from?
A. A cookbook. B. A guidebook. C. A sci-fi novel. D. A news website.

Following a diet rich in produce and low in processed meats even if you don’t do it perfectly may be helpful in preventing depression, according to a new study.
“To lower the risk of depression, people can eat everything, but everything in the right amount, as long as you try to eat lots of vegetables, fruits, nuts and fish, and lessen fast food and processed meats,” said Almudena Sanchez from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
At the start of the study, researchers asked 15,000 Spanish university graduates who had never had depression what they normally ate. Then they asked them again, 10 years later. The researchers looked at how closely the participants’ everyday diets stuck to three healthy diet patterns, in which they consumed high amounts of fruits, vegetables, legumes (豆类) , nuts and fish, and avoided processed meats. These principles are part of the Mediterranean diet and other healthy diets.
The researchers found that the people in the study who stuck to healthy patterns to a moderate or a high degree had a lower risk of depression than those who did not follow these diets at all, or who stuck to them to a low degree. For example, the risk of depression over the study period for the people who moderately stuck to the Mediterranean diet was about 25 to 30 percent lower than those who did not stick to the diet at all, or who stuck to it only to a very low degree.
The researchers don’t know for sure what may explain the link between these dietary patterns and people’s risk of depression. However, one potential mechanism(机制) is that people who follow these patterns may have a lower risk of depression because they get adequate levels of some micronutrients (微量营养元素) which are essential to brain health.
12. What is the purpose of the study according to the first paragraph?
A. To give advice on how to eat healthily.
B. To compare the benefits of different diets.
C. To find out how to keep mentally healthy.
D. To make clear the bad influence of depression.
13. What was necessary for the graduates to participate in the study?
A. They were healthy enough.
B. They stuck to healthy lifestyle.
C. They had never experienced depression.
D. They tended to go on a healthy diet.
14. What is the benefit of the Mediterranean diet?
A. It is made up of foods with lower calories.
B. It prevents people from getting depression.
C. It contains something good for brain health.
D. It keeps people away from getting overweight.
15 Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Tips on How to Lower Depression Risk
B. The Importance of Keeping a Balanced Diet
C. Scientists Found the Secrets of Depression
D. Eating Healthy Food May Lower Depression Risk
