    Sharon, Aged 22

The most important thing to keep in mind when going into high school is to be yourself. Besides, I don’t know what your middle school was like, but high school teachers will not care about things such as how much homework you already have in one night. It’s best to just learn to deal with things and manage your time wisely so you can achieve everything you need to.

    Frank, Aged 21

I think almost every kid feels both nervous and excited before their first day. You will probably love it. I know I did. You should join some sports or activities that will make your high school experience more enjoyable. Good luck!

    Eddie, Aged 20

When I started high school I was really nervous, especially since I had been homeschooled all through middle school and didn’t really know anyone. I suppose the best advice would be to just relax. The first couple of days can be a little bit hard, but things will become easier before you know it.

    David, Aged 19

I’m not going to lie. The first day is kind of frightening (令人恐惧的). But you’ll get used to it. Don’t be afraid of anyone; upperclassmen will pick on you more if you let them know you’re afraid. Just take it easy. Making some friends and staying with them will greatly help you get used to high school quickly. After the first week it’s really not bad at all. Don’t worry.

    21. What can we infer from Sharon about high school?

    A. Teachers are quite strict.

    B. Students often stay up at night.

    C. Teachers provide little care for students.

    D. Students should make good use of their time.

    22. How did Eddie feel on his first day of high school?

    A. Excited.   B. Bored.    C. Worried.   D. Relaxed.

    23. Who mentions the importance of friends?

    A. Frank.    B. David.    C. Sharon.  D. Eddie.

    B

The English language has a lot of words which can be used in many different ways and in many different expressions.

One such example is the word matter. In fact, matter can mean just about anything. It could be one of the most useful words in the English language.

Let’s get to the heart of the matter — a matter of principle (原则).

If someone says that you owe () him $50, but you don’t, a friend might say, “Well, you could pay him the $50. It’s not that much money. Then you won’t have to hear him say it anymore.” But if you do not owe him the money, do not pay him the money. It’s a matter of principle.

There is another way to use the word matter. But be careful with your choice of words.

If you ask someone, “What’s the matter?”, it shows you are worried about the other person. But saying, “What’s the matter with you?” has a completely different meaning. And it usually sounds rude (粗鲁的). In fact, when you say, “What’s the matter with you?”, you are suggesting that the person did something wrong or stupid.

Another expression that could sound rude is to say, “It doesn’t matter to me.” Here, it depends on the context, and how you say it. Let’s say you tell someone that a friend just got a big raise at work. That person answers with, “It doesn’t matter to me.” Here, it means he or she does not care. And it sounds rude.

But saying, “Oh, you pick where we eat dinner. It doesn’t matter to me.” does not sound rude. In this situation, “it doesn’t matter” shows you are easy-going (随和的).

No matter how you look at it and what you say, matter is a very useful word. And it’s only a matter of time before you will become an expert on the use of matter.

    24. We can infer from the text that the word matter _____.

    A. has a wide use         B. can mean money

    C. is the most used English word    D. has the most different expressions

    25. What is the author’s suggestion in Paragraph 4?

    A. Every penny counts.     B. Stick to what is right.

    C. Follow your friend’s advice.   D. Be careful when making friends.

    26. The underlined word “context” in the text probably means _____.

    A. choice    B. person       C. situation                       D. answer

    27. The author develops the text mainly by _____.

    A. using examples        B. giving instructions

    C. describing his experiences     D. discussing research findings

    C

When high school student Katie Shipley was born with a serious brain disease, doctors said she wouldn’t live to go to school.

Now, Katie is not only about to graduate from Southridge High School in Oregon, but she was also named the school’s prom (高中毕业舞会) queen.

Knowing Katie’s wishes for prom queen, her friend Courtney Travis began reaching out to find her the prom king she needed to make her a queen. Courtney found Michael Parks, who also thought it was a great idea.  “I really got to know Shipley,” said Michael. “When you take the time to get to know other people, it really gives you a great chance to live for more than yourself.”

Courtney took a picture of the couple together and put it on her Twitter, explaining their plans for the prom. “It became very popular in the school,” she said. Their efforts paid off, and Katie was very excited to be named prom queen. On the day of the prom, Katie wore a very beautiful dress. Her grandmother, Joan Fraley, who also went to the prom, said the night will stay with her always.

“I was standing there and the children were shouting her name,” she said. “They called her name as the new prom queen — I started crying. I’m greatly thankful to the students of Southridge High School.”

Katie repeated that feeling.  “I just want to say thank you to my friends for all they did for me. I love you all.”

Todd Corsetti, the principal (校长) at Southridge High School said that seeing Katie as prom queen and the energy and help of his students is one of his “proudest moments.”

According to a new US study, couples who expect their children to look after them in old age should hope they have daughters because daughters are twice as attentive as sons overall.

The research by Angelina Grigoryeva, from Princeton University, found that, while women provide as much care for their elderly parents as they can manage, men do as little as they can get away with and often leave it to female family members.

Her analysis of the family networks of 26,000 old Americans concluded that gender(性别) is one of the most important things that decide whether or not people will actively care for their elderly parents.

In a paper presented at the annual conference of the American Sociological Association in San Francisco, she concludes that simply having a sister makes men likely provide less care.

Using data from the University of Michigan Health and Retirement Study, a study which has been tracking a crosssection of over50s for the last decadeshe calculated that women provide an average of 12.3 hours a month of care for elderly parents while men offer only 5.6 hours.

“Sons reduce their relative caregiving efforts when they have a sister, while daughters increase theirs when they have a brother.”

“This suggests that sons pass on parent caregiving responsibilities to their sisters.”

In the UKthe 2011 Census showed that there are now around 6.5 million people with caring responsibilities, a figure which has risen by a tenth in a decade.

But many are doing so at the risk of their health. The census showed that those who provide 50 hours or more of care a week while trying to hold down a fulltime job are three times more likely to be struggling with ill health than their working counterparts who are not carers.

    32. According to the passage, what’s the most important factor to predict if people will actively care for the elderly?

    AEducation. BGender.  CCareer.   DIncome.

33The US study finds that ________.

Ahaving a sister makes men less likely to look after their parents

Bsons are twice as likely as daughters to care for parents in old age

Csons and daughters seem to give equal care to their parents

Dsons are unwilling to leave caregiving responsibilities to their sisters

34What does the author stress in the last paragraph?

APeople should give up their job to care for the elderly.

BMany care providers work longer hours than others.

CMany care providers have potential health problems.

DPeople shouldn’t pass on caring responsibilities to others.

35The author develops the text by ________.

    A. explaining social networks of careers

    B. describing people’s experiences

    C. comparing different gender behavior

    D. analyzing various researches and data

He would help someone because he wanted to and he loved to. One day while walking into a dusty road, this man saw a purse, then he picked it up and found that the purse was empty. Suddenly, a woman with a policeman showed up and caught him.

The woman kept on asking where he hid her money but the man replied, “It was empty when I found it, Mam.” The woman shouted out angrily, “Please give it back. It’s for my son’s school fees.” The man realized that the woman really felt sad, so he handed her all his money. He could see that the woman was a single mother. The man said, “Take these, sorry for the trouble.” The woman left and the policeman held the man for further questioning.

The woman was very happy, but later on she found her money was doubled, which came as something of a shock. One day while the woman was going to pay her son’s school fees towards the school, she noticed that some skinny man was walking behind her. She thought that he may rob her, so she approached a policeman standing nearby. He was the same policeman, who she took along to ask about her purse. The woman told him about the man following her, but suddenly they saw that man falling down on the ground. They ran at him and saw that he was the same man whom they caught a few days ago.

He looked very weak and the woman was confused.
