    Most Helpful Apps for Students
There’s almost an app for everything nowadays, and this can make student life easier, cheaper, safer and more fun. Whether you want help with taking notes, revising, waking up on time or keeping fit, read on for our student app picks.
    Lecture recording apps
Just a few years ago, students attending lectures would have to spend the entire time writing wildly on notepads, in order not to miss any vital bit of information. Then along came technology, and now lecture recording apps are a reality.
Sound Note is a popular lecture recording app for iPad users. You can store an entire lecture in both visual and audio form. Other good quality lecture recording apps include Notes Plus and Audio Memos Free—The Voice Recorder.
    Student planner apps
Organization is key for success and well-being at university, and student planner apps are becoming increasingly popular. As well as saving on paper, many student planner apps also send reminders and warnings straight to your phone or device. Popular student planner apps include Timetable, My Class Schedule and Class Timetable.
    Student safety apps
A number of apps for students have been developed promoting personal safety if out alone at night. The Circle of Six app is particularly useful for locating lost friends on nights out and also allows users to send their circle of six friends an instant call for help at the touch of a button. The GPS tracker will mark your location on your friends’ devices, ensuring you’ll always be able to find one another if necessary. Other student apps that promote safety include bSafe and React Mobile.
    Healthy eating apps
If you’re interested in eating healthily while keeping to a student budget, consider downloading a few healthy eating apps. Examples I’ve come across which are perfect apps for students include Rockin Ramen, a student app featuring a number of nutritious recipes with Ramen as a main ingredient, and MealBoard, an app which plans healthy meals, grocery shops and recipes based on what you’ve got in the fridge.

During the 1930s, the Great War broke out. A 25-year-old American soldier, probably never thought that his life would change forever when he volunteered to go to France.
One night while the American unit was returning to the base after a bloody fight, Suleyman stumbled(绊倒) into the ground and noticed a bit of movement from the bush. Being stuck between two choices either its enemy or an animal, Suleyman found a five-year-old girl from the bushes shivering(颤抖) with cold and utmost fear. Due to the atrocity of the war, the girl was abandoned by her family and the whole village was killed.
During the war, it was impossible to find the child’s family so Suleyman took this little French girl under his wings and gave her an American name Flora which means like the flower. Soon, Flora became the apple of the eye of everyone living in the army camp.
For one and a half years, Flora and Suleyman became inseparable; however, every fairy tale comes to an end. When the war ended, Suleyman was sent back to USA, while Flora was put in an orphanage(孤儿院), the Normandy School, which was founded by the American government for orphaned French children to have an education.
For years, Suleyman always thought about Flora. When the French National Olympic Team was playing in the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in 1984, Suleyman gazed through the audience on TV, hoping to catch a glimpse of Flora, but he never could.
At the age of 85, Suleyman attended the 60th anniversary reception of the Great War where Suleyman shared his story with American and French officials. After hearing his story, a French journalist started to investigate the story, and all government files were read in detail. The moment the journalist helped dial the number, in tears, Flora said Suleyman was her hero, and everything came flooding back to her.
    24. What does the underlined word “atrocity” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
    A. Cruelty. B. Challenge. C. Loss D. Stress.
    25. Why did Suleyman watch 1984 Summer Olympics?
    A. Because Flora might be in the French team.
    B. Because Suleyman was greatly interested in sports.
    C. Because Flora might be watching the event.
    D. Because Suleyman wanted to travel to Los Angeles.
    26. What can we learn from the passage?
    A. Flora and Suleyman became attached to each other. B. Flora was sent to an orphanage called Normandy.
    C. Suleyman found some animals in the bush. D. Suleyman would never see Flora again.
    27. Which can serve as the best possible title for the text?
    A. A Tough Flower in the War B. The Influence of the War
    C. The Apple of the Father’s Eye D. The Lost and Found Love
    C
It was another day of class. As the students practiced parkour (跑酷), a mother and her child walked past. “What are they doing, mum?” the child asked. “They are putting themselves in danger and it is something I will never want you to do,” the mother replied.
I drew back with worry and painful acceptance. What has happened to the natural love of movement in humans, and what will happen to the future generations when technology and convenience are controlling our daily lives?
We recently had a Parkour for Everyone workshop at Bishan. I remember very clearly when Fagan was giving instructions to a group, a young child ran up to a tall pillar (柱子) and started to climb it till a high height with a 2-metre drop. Of course, Fagan called him back due to safety concerns. But deep down, I knew a lot of us were smiling within. Such natural bravery is admired and in my opinion, is a must for achieving success in life.
Parkour is starting to get popular, but many parents do not understand it. Even I hesitate when I tell them I am a parkour coach. I can see their wonder, fear, or dislike. I get tired of explaining its life-changing benefits. Actually, there is a deeper meaning behind why parkour is practised. There is a huge surge of physical and emotional freedom that comes along with its practice.
Fortunately, times are changing. If the parents who do not like this art are positively changed by it, there will be no more doubt in the power that parkour can bring to man. My hope is that the day will come when it is common for parents to put aside electronic products and spend time moving and playing with their children in the open field. Children will grow in imagination and confidence, learning more about the spirit of play.
    28. What does the author worry about?
    A. Mothers’ pain. B. Outdoor dangers.
    C. Children’s growth. D. Technology development.
    29. What made us smile within?
    A. Fangan’s responsibility. B. The show of expected courage.
    C. The child’s funny performance. D. The big success of the workshop.
    30. What does the underlined word “surge” in paragraph 4 mean?
    A. Increase. B. Exchange C. Demand. D. Loss.
    31. What is the writer’s intention of writing the text?
    A. To inspire students. B. To describe parkour.
    C. To express the concern. D. To help parents change.
    D
There are many fascinating aspects of ant life, but none may be a more practical lesson for us than their gift for avoiding traffic jams.
A new research paper published in the journal eLife reveals how ants keep traffic flowing by changing their behavior to meet changing conditions. For their experiments, researchers from the University of Toulouse and the University of Arizona focused on Argentine ants that frequently move from one colony (聚居地) to another depending on where the food is.
Exploring the Argentine ants’ gift for fast travel, the researchers built bridges connecting their colonies. The bridges varied in width from a fifth to three-quarters of an inch. The colonies, too, were of different sizes, ranging from 400 to more than 25,00 ants. Then they sat back and monitored the traffic.
To their surprise, even when those narrower bridges reached near capacity (容量), there were no 20-ant pile-ups. Indeed, there was never a hold-up. Traffic remained steady because ants were able to adjust to the change of road conditions. At some point, when the bridges got really busy, ants moved not so much as individuals but rather like water flowing in an ever widening stream.
“When the number of ants on the bridge increased, ants seemed to be able to assess the situation and adjusted their speed accordingly to avoid making the traffic flow stop,” the authors note in a news release. “Moreover, ants kept themselves from entering a crowded path and made sure that the bridge was never too crowded to cross.” Argentine ants are extremely effective in getting to where they need to be in a hurry.
The lesson for humans? The traffic problem may lie in our inability to adjust our driving habits for the good of the whole. “Traffic jams are everywhere in human society where individuals are pursuing their own personal objectives,” the authors write. “In contrast, ants share a common goal: the survival of the colony, thus they are expected to act cooperatively to optimize (优化) food return.”
    32. How do the ants keep traffic flowing?
    A. By adjusting to the road conditions. B. By monitoring the traffic flow.
    C. By communicating with each other. D. By building their own paths.
    33. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
    A. The results of the experiments. B. The purpose of the experiments.
    C. The preparations of the experiments. D. The requirements of the experiments.
    34. What does the author expect humans to do in the last paragraph?
    A. To raise traffic safety awareness. B. To find solutions to present problems.
    C. To give up individuals’ ambitions. D. To act for the good of the whole society.
    35. What is the best title for the text?
    A. Argentine Ants Move On the Roads B. Explore Interesting Ants’ Gifts
    C. Watch Ants Cross the Roads D. Ants Teach Us How to Avoid Traffic Jams

Online training is one of the fastest growing parts of the fitness industry. If you’re considering joining the online fitness community, consider these benefits and drawbacks.
One of the most popular reasons for working out following an online video is that it offers great convenience. No need to roll out of bed at 5 a. m. to attend that 6 a.m. boot camp class, which may end up being full when you arrive. 36 And what if you’re on the road? No problem. You can access your workout video through your phone.
37 Most online fitness programs are much less expensive than similar offline programs—most range in cost from $ 10 to $ 20 per month. Some are even free. For example, the online Les Mills + program offers a free 30-day trial of its 1, 500-plus workouts.
Online training also has broad offerings. When you head online, you have instructors from around the globe all ready and willing to help you master your favorite moves. 38 Just because there isn’t a Krav Maga class in your area doesn’t mean you can’t go online to find one led by qualified instructors.
All these are undoubtedly positive—online training provides fitness resources to general consumers wherever they are, without requiring access to a gym or fitness studio. 39
Very few online fitness programs enable the instructor to see you, check your form, and offer corrections based on your performance. 40 This is particularly concerning for beginners, as they’re more likely to do incorrectly. Besides, if you struggle with self-motivation and prefer a social workout environment, online fitness may not be for you.
    A.Another is the price.
    B.But it’s not without problems.
C.The same goes for different types of exercise.
D.However, online personal training isn’t for everyone.
E.Instead, you can turn it on at home at your convenience.
F.That being said, online workouts aren’t perfect when it comes to safety.
G.This means you could perform exercises wrongly, or even unsafely, without knowing it.

Only a very costly operation could save Jack but there was no one to whom they could turn for the money needed. She heard Daddy say to her tearful Mom. “Only a miracle(奇迹) can save him now.”
At the words, Michelle went to her bedroom and took out all the coins from her little moneybox. After counting the coins three times, she slipped out the back door and made her way to the drug store six blocks away.
She waited for a long time before the pharmacist(药剂师) turned around and asked her. “And what do you want?”
“Well, it’s about my brother,” Michelle answered. “He’s really, really sick ... and I want to buy a miracle.”
“I beg your pardon?” said the pharmacist. “His name is Jack and he has something very bad growing inside his body and my Daddy says only a miracle can save him now. So how much does a miracle cost?”
“We don’t sell miracles here, little girl. I’m sorry but I can’t help you,” the pharmacist said. “Listen, I have the money to pay for it.” And with these words, Michelle poured out all the coins from her pockets. At this time, a welldressed man behind Michelle stooped down and asked the little girl. “I’m selling the miracle you want. Tell me how much money you have.”
“One dollar and eleven cents,” Michelle answered in a low voice. “And it’s all the money I have, but I can get some more if I need to.”
“Well,” smiled the man. “A dollar and eleven cents — the exact price of a miracle for little brothers. Show me the place where your brother lives.”

I’ve learned from your post that you are recruiting an adviser to help you learn Chinese so I’m writing to recommend myself.
I’m Li Hua, a student from Xinhua High School. First of all, as an out-going, friendly and open person, I love making friends and helping them with their studies. Besides, I can speak both English and Chinese fluently. More importantly, in my spare time, I love reading books about Western and Chinese culture and customs. I think we are sure to help each other make progress if you choose me as your adviser.
I believe I’m the right person you’re looking for. Looking forward to your reply.

    第二节
    参考范文1:
Holding the man’s hand firmly, Michelle took him home. The little girl walked in such a hurry that she even forgot to introduce herself to the man. Her parents were too surprised to believe their eyes. That welldressed man turned out to be a surgeon, specializing in neurosurgery. Later, the little brother was taken away. The operation was completed with payment of one dollar and eleven cents and it wasn’t long before Jack was home again and doing well. The whole family was very happy and thankful.
When asked why he chose to help the family, the man explained the reason. “When I was young myself, I was once in the same situation as the little baby. The little girl reminded me of my own sister. It was she who saved my life. Deeply impressed by her innocence, I finally decided to help the family out of trouble. It doesn’t matter how much money she actually had with her; what matters is her faith, a faith that miracles do exist.” Now Michelle knew the exact price of a miracle ... one dollar and eleven cents ... plus the faith of a little child.

    参考范文2:
Holding the man’s hand firmly, Michelle took him home. Opening the door, she came dashing to her parents and shouted excitedly, “I have found a miracle to help Jack through!” Her depressed parents felt confused. Then the well-dressed man explained he was a businessman and that he was willing to pay for the costly operation. Tears of joy welled up as her parents heard about the news. The next day the man arranged the boy to the hospital and the operation was a great success. Soon the boy recovered completely and the family were grateful to the man.
When asked why he chose to help the family, the man slowly explained the reason. “Hearing what the little girl said in the drug store, I was touched deeply. Actually it was her priceless love that helped the family and created the miracle.” Now Michelle has become a successful woman. She never forgets the great difference the gentleman has made to her family and she is just passing the act of kindness on.

W: Do you need a hand?
M: Thanks, Nancy. My colleague Mark is always there for me when I need some help.
    6~7
W: Can I help you, sir?
M: I’d like to see a suit for the autumn.
W: How do you like this, sir?
M: It’s much too light in color for the autumn.
W: What about this then? It’s made of pure wool, very soft.
M: I like the style, but it’s loose at the waist. And it’s a bit large.
W: What about this one? We have this model in several sizes and colors, dark brown, light green, light-yellow, and dark blue.
M: Let me have a look at the brown one. All right, it just suits me. I’ll take it.
    8~10
M: Hello, who is that speaking?
W: Good morning, uncle. How are you?
    M: Sorry, I didn’t recognize your voice.
    W: It’s me, Nancy.
M: Oh, Nancy, you sound quite different this time. There must be a problem with my phone. Anyway, how is your new job?
W: It’s fine. I’m calling to tell you that there is a job opening in my company. I wonder if Judy wants to apply for it. I called her just now, but I couldn’t reach her.
M: Maybe she is busy right now. You’re so kind to your cousin. By the way, which position is it that you referred to just now?
W: A sales manager. She can download a form from our website.
M: OK. I’ll inform her later.
    11~13
M: Lucy, how was your first day at school?
W: It was great, Dad. Well, today I had math, English and art.
M: What do you think about the teachers?
W: They are all good teachers. My math teacher is an American. He has rich teaching experience. He is very patient with us. And he is easy to get along with.
M: That’s great. How is your English teacher?
W: She is my favorite. She’s from a small town in the middle of England. In today’s class, she gave us a lecture on how to be a good student. Her lecture was excellent.
M: What about your art teacher?
W: She is very kind. She’s from Canada. Her class is really interesting.
    14~16
M: I had a terrible journey back from Thailand last week.
W: Really? Why? The scenery there is so beautiful. What happened?
M: I was not going sightseeing. I was on a business trip. Well, first of all, the taxi that was taking me from the client's office to the airport broke down on the freeway.
    W: Oh, no.
M: The driver didn’t speak any English or French and he didn’t have a phone on him—can you believe it? And his radio didn’t work. So there was no way he could get in touch with the office to get them to send another taxi.
W: Then what did you do?
    M: Well. I actually thumbed a lift.
    W: You what?
M: I stood on the side of the freeway and stuck my thumb out. There were a lot of cars going by, but no one stopped. At last a passing truck stopped and took me to the airport.
    W: Wow, good for you.
M: Yes, but he drove really slowly. I missed my flight.
    W: It’s too awful.
M: Yes, I had to wait three hours for the next one. I didn’t get home till four in the morning. When I got home, I realized I’d left my house keys in my hotel in Bangkok.
    W: Oh, poor you!
    17~20
