I. Teaching aims and learning objectives 

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

1. learn about some information of Marie Curie.

2. complete exercises with information from listening materials.

3. talk about great people and the reasons they are admired.

II. Teaching contents

1. New words and phrases: Mathematics, scientist, radium, laboratory, professor, discovery, unknown, widely, marry a French scientist, the discovery of, get married, be unknown to, push for the use of X-ray machines

2. New structures: Who do you think is the greatest person in history?

      Why do you admire her?

1. Describe Marie Curie’s personal information.

2. Give the reason why you admire your hero.

Step 1 Lead-in

1. Look and guess

  T: Look at the introductions and guess who the person is.

T: Marie Curie was born in Poland. She is a scientist. She won the Nobel Prize twice. What else do you know about her?

Step 2 Presentation

1. Read and fill in the blanks

  T: Read the information in A1 and try to fill in the blanks No.1, 2, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 18.

2. Read and answer

  Question 1. When and where was she born?

      She was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1867.

Question 2. In 1891, where did she move to?

      She moved to Paris, France.

Question 3. What did she study at university?

      She studied Mathematics and Physics at university.

Question 4. Who was she married to?

She was married to Pierre Curie, a French scientist.

Question 5. What did she discover in 1898?

      She discovered radium with her husband Pierre Curie.

      She was famous because of the discovery of radium.

Question 6. How old was she when she died?

      She was 67. She died at the age of 67.
