One Halloween a little boy and his friend went out for a fun night of trick- or- treating. At first everything was great.
They were getting lots of candy as they went from house to house, but then they saw a house which they hadn’t been to before. It was a very spooky(阴森森的)house. Being young and brave, they decided to go up to the door and knock. After all, scary houses might have the best candy!
As they walked up the long winding path, they saw things that frightened(使恐惧)them to the bone! They heard sounds that frightened them. Maybe they should turn back. But the little boys, being very brave, just wanted to see what was in that house,so they went on, not deterred by the things they heard or saw. As they slowly made their way up to the door, they imagined what might be inside. Maybe it would be a witch or maybe a ghost!
After knocking several times, the door slowly creaked(嘎吱作响)open. To their surprise, a monster(怪物)slowly came out to greet them. They were so scared that they couldn’t move! What could they do? Then the little boy had an idea. He said, “Trick or treat!” Then the big scary monster, much to the kids’ surprise, reached over and brought out a huge bowl of the best candy they had never seen. Wow, the kids thought, this was great! It turned out that the house was decorated for Halloween, and the big scary monster was just wearing a costume, just like the kids. Since they were the only kids, and were brave enough to go to the scary house, they could take as much candy as they wanted.

There is little rain in desert. Because deserts are so dry, they have no “quilt” to help stop the soil from going away. As a result, they may get very hot during the day with the sun shining, but don’t hold the heat overnight. Many deserts can quickly get cold once the sun goes down. Some deserts can reach temperatures of over 100 degrees F during the day and then drop below freezing (32 degrees F) during the night.
The largest hot and dry desert in the world is the Sahara Desert in Northern Africa. The Sahara is a sandy desert with great sand hills. It covers over 3 million square miles of Africa. Other large deserts include the Arabian Desert in the Middle East, the Gobi Desert in Northern China and Mongolia, and Kalahari Desert in Africa.
Animals that live in the desert are also used to needing little water. Many get all the water they need from the food they eat. Other animals keep water that they can use later. The camel stores up fat in its hump while other animals keep something they need in their tails.
Only certain types of plants can live in the terrible environment of the desert. You won’t see a lot of tall trees in the desert. Most plants have a way to keep water in their leaves or trunks, so they can live a long time without water. Now deserts cover around 20% of the world’s land, but they are growing. This is called desertification and is caused by different reasons including human activities. The Sahara Desert is growing larger and larger each year. What should we do with it?
24. How is the weather during the night in the desert?
A. Hot. B. Cold. C. Cool. D. Sunny.
25. Why won’t we see a lot of tall trees in the desert?
A. Because of few people there. B. Because of the sun shining.
C. Because of the terrible environment. D. Because there are no trees there.
26. How much of the land do deserts cover in the world?
A. About one fifth. B. Less than10%. C. About two fifths. D. About three fourths.

Ten years ago I used to be very fit(健康的). I rode a bike to work and I got a lot of exercise at weekends. I used to play tennis a lot and go for long walks. In those days I didn’t earn very much. I had a job in an office. It wasn’t a very good job but I had a lot of time to do the things I enjoyed doing.
Then, about eight years ago, I got a much better job. The pay was better, but the hours were a lot longer. I bought a car and drove to work every day. I began to take people out to lunch. And I began to put on weight, too. I stopped playing tennis and going for long walks at weekends because I just didn’t have any time for things like that any more.
There’s a lot of stress(压力)in my job. Perhaps that’s why I started drinking more than I used to. I started smoking a lot, too. I never used to smoke at all.
Two months ago I had a heart attack. At first I just couldn’t believe it. Luckily it wasn’t very serious. The doctor advised me to stop smoking and to eat less. He also advised me to work less and get more exercise. But I just haven’t any time! My job takes everything out of me!
Sometimes I wonder if I should get another job. Perhaps I could do something like I used to do. But if I do that, I won’t earn as much. I have a family to support. I have to think of them, too. I just don’t know what I should do. What do you think?
27. Compared with ten years ago, what is worse for the author now?

29. After the author had a heart attack, the doctor advised him.
A. not to work any longer B. to take a long vacation abroad
C. to stop smoking and take more exercise D. not to eat out any more
30. What can we learn about the author?
A. The author is not sure what he should do now.
B. The author has taken the doctor’s advice.
C. The author has got another new job.
D. The author feels much better now.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
There was a rich couple who was throwing a big new year party at their house. So they went shopping at the market where everything was of high cost and had a fixed price. They wanted to maintain their high living standard so they didn’t mind paying a lot for it. After purchasing everything they needed, they called a porter to carry everything and drop it off at their home. The porter who came was of an old age, not very healthy looking. His clothes were tom and he looked as if he wasn’t even able to meet his daily needs.
They asked the porter about the charges for delivering their goods at their home. The old porter quoted just $20, a price well below the market rate for delivering goods at the couple’s home in his cart. Yet, the couple argued and bargained with the porter and finally settled for $ 15. The porter was struggling to make money for every single meal so he needed anything he could earn.
The couple was very happy thinking how well they had bargained with the poor porter and paid him $ 15 in advance and left after giving the porter their address for delivery. They reached their home and one hour passed, two hours passed, but the porter still hadn’t delivered their stuff.
The wife started to get angry at her husband, "I always tell you not to trust such a person but you never listen to me. Such a person is not even able to earn enough money to feed himself for one time in a day, and you handed him everything we purchased for our big party. I am sure instead of delivering it at our home, he must have disappeared with everything. We must immediately go back to the market to inquire and then go to the police station to file a complaint against him."
They both left towards the market. On their way, near the market, they saw another porter. They stopped him to inquire about the old porter and noticed that he was carrying their stuff in his cart!

(Text 4)

M: Hello. Are you the person who has a house for sale?
W: Yes, I am.
M: Wel1, the ad says that it has four bedrooms and three baths, just what I need for my family of six. May I ask how much you want for it?
W: I prefer not to talk about it over the phone, but let’s say it’s $50,000. But you should pay me $10,000 first. Why don’t you come by and take a look?
M: Well, I’m not sure I could pay you such a large sum of money right now, but I would like to see the house. If you can tell me how to get to Churchill Avenue from South Florida Street, my wife and I’ll be over.
(Text 7)
W: what’s the matter, dear?
M: I want a cup of coffee, but this machine is out of order, and I lost my money.
W: Let’s go to the restaurant at the Student Center.
M: Better not. The last time I was there it was so crowded that I had to wait in line for almost an hour.
W: Really? Let’s go somewhere else then. It can’t be too long because I have a test at three o’clock.
M: Okay. Let’s go to the library. There’s another machine downstairs by the telephones.
(Text 8)
M: When did you become interested in collecting stamps?
M: Oh, when I was about ten years old. It’s an exciting hobby. You know, the first postage stamps were issued in Britain in 1840.
W: Really? I didn’t know that. I did know that the charge for mail delivery was paid by either the sender or the receiver. How much was the usual charge?
M: Oh, about ten cents for a short distance. But post off ices were losing money with that system. Rowland Hi11, an Englishman, suggested using postage stamps. Here’s a picture of the first two stamps issued.
W: They both bear a picture of Queen Victoria.
M: Yes, I wish I had the originals. I would be a wealthy man instead of a poor stamp collector.
(Text 9)
M: Hey, Michelle. Look what I just found. Right here in the sand.
W: A piece of wood? Oh. Driftwood, interesting shape, almost like some sort of modern sculpture.
M: Yeah. And feel how smooth it is.
W: Hmm. Must’ve been in the water a long time. It could’ve been drifting in the ocean movement for months, or even years.
M: In the ocean movement? Doesn’t the wind just blow things around out there?
W: Well, sure. But the ocean water is always moving too. Almost like rivers, but underwater rivers, flowing through the ocean.
M: So how do scientists find out where ocean water goes? Stick a message in a bottle and throw it in the water?
W: Don’t laugh. In fact, I was reading in a science magazine that scientists have put huge numbers of bottles into the ocean over the years. They wanted to map out where the ocean water would carry them.
M: Say, I’m sure after they found out where all those bottles ended up, they could enter all that data into a computer and make a pretty detailed model to show where the ocean water goes.
W: In fact, they did.
(Text 10)
Nowadays, rugby is more than just a different way of playing football. But over a hundred years ago, it was "invented" by a schoolboy playing in a football team. This boy wanted to score a goal, so he picked up the ball and ran up the pitch. Then he put the ball down between the goa l posts. The boy was a pupil at Rugby School, so ever since then the game has been called rugby.
Let me explain some of the rules of the game. There are fifteen men in a rugby team. In football you may only kick the ball;the ball is completely round. A rugby ball is not round. This makes the ball easier to hold, because you must run with the ball in your hands. Each side tries to carry the ball to the other team’s end of the pitch and places it on the ground. If a player can do this without the other side stopping him, he scores a "try", which is worth four points. The player can then attempt to kick the ball between the goa l posts and score two more points. If a team breaks the rules then the other side can take a free kick at their goal, and it counts as three points.
Every year England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland and France play each other at rugby in a championship. However, the best team in the world comes from New Zealand. The team is called the "All Blacks" because the players wear black shirts, shorts and socks.
Rugby is popular all over the world. Although rugby is a rougher game than football, the players are friendly, but that is after the game is over!
