[2022·潍坊市高三模拟]Kenny Eating House is always crowded in the late afternoons right up to midnight. You will see many people standing around the tables. __1__ Once there is the slightest indication that the customers are leaving their table, you will see a few people diving for it. The victor will stand at the table proudly waving his relatives or friends over, while the losers will be down in the mouth.

__2__ You next have to get the attention of the busy waiters rushing about to attend to the customers. You will usually hear the words “hot water” being shouted out as they pass, even if they are not holding any such thing! __3__ In between trying to catch the attention of the waiters and looking through the menu, you will hear customers complaining about the slow service.

Once the waiter comes to take your orders, he is impatient. Sometimes, these waiters would just walk away from indecisive customers and the latter would have to work hard at getting some attention again. Usually, the waiters shout the orders out to the cooks located deep in the kitchen. __4__

Whenever the crowd gets too thick, the waiters will ask customers to share their tables with those standing. When the tables are shared by two different groups of people, the loudness becomes incredibly deafening. With plates clanking and people talking loudly, you need to shout to be heard. __5__ The hardworking waiters can finally sit down for a chat or have their cigarettes. The activity at the eating place winds down, ready to recover before the next day of madness arrives.

    ADon't lose heart.

BThey are fully occupied around the clock.

CThis is in fact their clever way of clearing the way.

DBut having found a place to sit is not the end of the wait.

EAnd such behavior adds to the busy atmosphere of the place.

FThey will be on the watch for a table most likely to be empty.

GBy the midnight the crowd begin to thin and the noise dies down.

[2022·武汉市高三模拟]Lake Baikal, the biggest body of fresh water on Earth near Russia's border with Mongolia, is home to several unusual animals, including the world's only species of freshwater seal (海豹).

Seals exist in large quantities in Baikal, about 100000 of them, though the lake is poor in nutrition. __1__. A study just published by Watanabe Yuuki of the National Institute of Polar Research in Tokyo suggests the answer is tiny organisms.

Most seals eat fish. And Baikal seals do, indeed, have needlepointed teeth. But in 1982 researchers noted that they developed a second sort of specialized tooth behind those canines (犬齿). They have sharp teeth which look like combs (梳子). __2__. But Dr Watanabe guessed that they might be an adaptation for feeding on other strange creatures in the lake.

Seals arrived in Baikal 2 million years ago, from the Arctic Ocean. So too did some much smaller sea creatures, known as amphipods. These have grown into more than 340 species.

__3__. But Dr Watanabe wondered if the Baikal seals' comblike teeth might enable them to filter (过滤) these tiny creatures from the water in sufficient quantities to make them useful food sources. __4__.

Records showed that the seals would dive in with their mouths open and collect amphipod groups that form at night. Dr Watanabe estimated that each seal catches an average of 57 amphipods per dive. __5__for the seals do hunt fish as well. But they also compete with those fish for the amphipods, thus partially bypassing a link in the food chain and perhaps maintaining themselves in larger numbers than what would otherwise be possible.

    AThe needlelike canines are necessary

BSo how they do so well has been a puzzle

CThis has led to their numbers increasing sharply

DAt the time, nobody knew what to make of them

EHe therefore used waterproof cameras to observe a few seals

FCameras remained attached to some seals for between two and four days

GSea mammals of the size of seals would normally see amphipods as too small to hunt

[2022·济南市高三模拟]A ship in the harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for said John Augustus Shedd, an early 20th century author. Throughout COVID19, we've all become used to assessing risk in new ways. We've come to understand, though we can never get rid of risk altogetherwe have great power to make choices both large and small to protect ourselves. __1__ It stops us from stepping outside of our comfort zones and trying new things.

Developmental psychologists talk about “positive risks”—socially acceptable risks that our lives can benefit from. __2__ But what about those who develop into adults? Researchers have found that happiness for older adults is being able to choose how they spend their time, including ways that are adventurous, new and even mildly riskylike hiking or other outdoor activities.

One guide to positive risk management lists ways that people can make sure their risks are on the “safe” side of the risk range. For example, to ensure a successful bike ride, you should in advance equip yourself with a fullycharged cell phone and a full water bottle. __3__ Or if you are concerned about your physical capacity, consult a certified trainer or a medical professional before departure.

__4__ This means adapting to changing situations. In response to the deadly viruspeople choose to step back into normal life only after they are vaccinated. In this way, people could be confident that the risk is tolerable.

Nobody wants to be needlessly risky. But using our newlyacquired riskassessment tools, we can once again learn and grow in our lives. __5__

ATake risks in a positive way.

BBut the selfprotective mind state carries its own risk.

COverall happiness is one benefit of positive risktaking.

DRemember to tell one of your friends or families your destination.

EBesides taking preventive steps, flexible thinking is also encouraged.

FLike a ship sailing away from its harbor, that is what we were built to do.

GFor teenagers, this means risks like running for a monitor or trying out for a team.

[2022·武汉市高三调研]Now I live in Paris. Actually, I don't mind the food or the people, but I do care about the land that extraordinarily lacks characteristics of hiking. I enjoy being outdoors and hikingbut Paris's natural resources don't hold much potential for my bent. So when my dad asked if I wanted to go hiking with him, I was overjoyed. __1__. It turned out that I was too optimistic.

We started our main hike up Flattop Mountain. As we hiked it was much more challenging than I had expected. __2__. The path is winding and we saw mountains towering over the green valleys and cliffs that seemed endless. What amazed me most was that thick clouds enveloped the mountainsides. __3__.

I stared up at the top to see how much farther we had to go and I began to worry that I wouldn't finish it. __4__. It made me doubtful about my persistence (坚持). But when we looked back at the path that faded in the distance, I was filled with fulfillment with seeing how much we had done.

As I was hiking, I started to reflect on how hiking was similar to other aspects of my life. __5__. It reminded me of my struggles in my classes and the difficulties I had to overcome. I spotted that the process of learning isn't always the most fun, but the fulfillment after seeing how much I had finished just increases the thirst for knowledge, causing me to long for more learning. Looking down at the mountain I was content but never fully satisfied. Having considered a lot, I was determined to pursue the summit (山顶).

    AHiking could make me fly

BHiking gave time for my mind to wander

CI thought I would finish the journey with ease

DBut I was shocked at the beauty surrounding me

EI was satisfied with the landscape along the way

FIt was unlike anything I had ever witnessed before

GA recent ankle injury had left me unsure of my physical capabilities

    Test 1

    Test 2

1答案与解析:B 空前一句中的large quantitiespoor in nutrition形成对比,空处内容应是由上文内容引发的疑问,故B项符合语境,且下文中的the answer is tiny organismsB项相呼应。

But Dr Watanabe guessed that...in the lake可推知,空后讲到的内容是在揭秘,再结合上文的in 1982 researchers noted...which look like combs (梳子)可知,空处内容应该是当时对淡水海豹像梳子一样的牙齿的不解,故D项符合语境。

5答案与解析:A 根据下文中的for the seals do hunt fish as well并结合常识可知,针状的牙对于捕食鱼很有帮助,所以也是必需的,故A项符合语境。

    Test 3

It stops us...trying new things可知,它阻止我们走出舒适区、尝试新事物。 空后的It与选项B中的the selfprotective mind state呼应。

But what about...mildly risky可知,空后阐述积极风险对成人的积极影响。

Nobody wants to...our lives可知,没有人愿意冒不必要的风险。

    Test 4

It turned out that I was too optimistic可知,前一句讲到的应该是作者对远足的乐观态度。

The path is winding and...that seemed endless则讲到了途中的风景,因此空处形成转折,故D项符合语境。

It made me doubtful about my persistence

It reminded me of my struggles中的It指的应该是hiking,选项锁定A项和B项,空前空后分别讲到了作者的反思和回想,故B项符合语境。
