Have you ever imagined going inside of a video game? That dream may soon become real. It’s called the “metaverse”.
The metaverse is a shared virtua(虚拟的)3D world, or worlds. The word is a combination of “meta”, which means beyond, and “verse”, which refers to “universe”. The word first appeared in a 1992 science fiction book called Snow Crash. In this story, people wear virtual reality(VR)headsets to see and join the metaverse.
Now, what happens in the book is becoming a reality. Wearing a VR headset, you can meet other people wherever they are. You can work and play with them. It will feel real because the technology can simulate(模拟)our senses: vision, hearing, touch, and even smell.
“We’re talking about creating another reality, another world, that’s as rich as the real world,” said Rev Lebaredian, vice president of simulation technology at NVIDIA, a US tech company.
So, what can you do inside of the metaverse? Your location will no longer matter, says VOA News. In the metaverse, “people...would be connected at all times…” You can meet friends from other countries and go on a virtual beach vacation together. But forget Thailand — you can go to the beach on the moon, or anywhere else you can imagine. Can’t find a friend to play basketball? Jump into the metaverse and find some friends to play with or go to a concert!
Cathy Hackl, an expert in metaverse technology, said her son’s first concert was inside of a video game. “Just because it happened in a video game, it didn’t make it less real for him,” she said.
Perhaps the metaverse will change our idea of what is real.
34.What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A.Where the word “metaverse” comes from. B.People’s imagination of the metaverse.
C.An introduction to the game company. D.How you can join the metaverse.
35.Wearing a VR headset, you can ________.
A.design your own video games B.meet anyone you want to see
C.create your own virtual world D.feel what you can touch
36.What do we know from VOA News?
A.The location is of great importance.
B.You can visit any place you like in the metaverse.
C.Scenes in the metaverse are all connected.
D.The metaverse will replace traditional video games.
37.What is Cathy Hackl’s attitude(态度)toward the metaverse?
A.The metaverse will hardly change our lives. B.It is not good for kids to join the metaverse.
C.The metaverse is just a different kind of reality. D.The technology still needs to be developed.

My mom’s life was a busy one. Raising four kids on her own was a full time job in itself, but she also worked outside the home. Surprisingly, she always seemed to find a little bit of extra time for us despite (不管) her schedule (预定计划).
She would take us over to my aunt’s in the evening when she worked as a waitress in a small diner. We would just be finished with school and have to hurry, so my mom would be on time for work. I thought she would pass us over to our aunt and hurry off as soon as we made it through the front gate, but that didn’t happen. Instead, we would sit on the porch (门廊), my mom in her waitress uniform, and we would rock in my aunt’s big wooden swing (秋千) and talk about what happened that day.
“I learned how to add numbers up to the hundreds,” my sister Sandy would say.
“That’s wonderful,” my mom would reply, holding her tight.
“I learned how to write my name!” Larry, my younger brother, would shout.
My mom would get a piece of paper and a pencil out of her purse and hand it to my brother “Show me how you do it,”she’d ask softly.
“Do you have enough time to hear what I did today?” I’d ask her.
Mom would smile at me and nod. “I’m never too busy for something important like that!”
She gave us the gift of time again and again throughout the years. Later on in her life, when she came to live with us after her retirement (退休), my mom gave the gift of time to my children too. They would run around excitedly, asking their grandma if she would play with them, or read them a story, or go for a walk with them. By then my mom had health problems, but she would always nod and sit down and read to them or tell them stories about when she was a little girl. Those moments were a wonderful gift that my children still talk about and treasure.
In the last few years of her life, I would take her to lunch or sit with her on the porch, and we would talk about the past, the dream of the future, and just enjoy being with each other. My mom would listen as I shared all of my hopes, my fears, and my dreams for my family. I would look at her and ask her if she minded me taking up so much of her free time.
‘‘Nonsense,’’she’d tell me. Then she’d give me a wink and say, ”“I’m never too busy to spend time with you. It’s one of the greatest joys of my life.”
I will always remember those wonderful words and the loving heart behind them. It is a gift my mom give to me for which I will forever be grateful. In this busy world of ours, and in a life filled with challenges, she always had time to share her joy with me.

Many Americans find silence uncomfortable during a dinner. So in the United States people often make “small talk” in certain social situations. Small talk is about different topics, only for keeping a conversation going. The topics might include the weather, sports, college lessons, clothing, food, etc. Small talk is very useful in social situations when you meet someone for the first time, or when polite conversation is expected but no serious discussion is wanted.
It is common but not necessarily expected that one knows someone in a group before talking with him or her in a conversation. In fact, at a party, “May I join you?” and a self-introduction is useful enough to get a welcome from a group and to join in a conversation. In some places, such as a concert hall or a theatre, a waiting room or a classroom, it’s common for strangers to start a conversation even without an introduction.
People in the States expect those whom they speak to stop whatever they are doing and listen. As a rule, the conversation distance (距离) between two people is at least two or three feet. Standing very close will make many Americans feel uncomfortable.
根据短文内容,回答下列问题。
76.Why do Americans make “small talk”?
__________________________________________
77.What would you do if you want to join in a conversation at a party in the USA?
