Queen Elizabeth National Park is a place of outstanding beauty and extreme biodiversity. On a previous underwater assignment with my wife and photographic partner, Jennifer Hayes, we’d documented healthy coral reefs surrounded with fish, sharks, and crocodiles. We knew that time, increased tourism and climate change could make the park different so 15 years later, we returned to see how it was going.

We were photographing some jellyfish. Jennifer, her back to me, was focused on something above her. Out of the corner of my viewfinder, I saw a sizable crocodile coming. As I began to take its photograph, I realized that the crocodile was going to swim directly between Jennifer and me. I started to make loud noises through my regulator and moved towards Jen, firing a burst of flash-lit shots to warn her that we had company. She quickly detected my signal and turned to meet our visitor.

She gave me a quick thumbs-up, nodded OK, and said “Hello, handsome” as she bent closer to take its photos. I admired her for treating the crocodile with respect, calm curiosity, and absolute joy. She didn’t feel threatened. She was familiar with this kind of crocodile in this particular place and she had a big underwater camera housing that could double as a mighty shield (盾牌) if needed. After a few pictures the crocodile, unimpressed with us, swam downstream on its way to do other crocodile things. We continued our search for jellyfish.

There is always risk in our line of work. But this encounter highlighted the good news that we saw all around us here. The crocodile is an indicator animal, a symbol of a healthy ecosystem that can support top predators (捕食性动物). The easing of travel restrictions is bound to bring more touristsso it’s vital to maintain a balance among ecotourism, exploration, and conservation. That’s possible if visitors adopt the same philosophy that we hold toward that curious crocodile. We enter Earth’s oceans on their terms, not our own.

    24. What was the author’s purpose in returning to Queen Elizabeth National Park?

    A. To enjoy its beauty. B. To assess a document.

    C. To check its ecosystem. D. To photograph jellyfish.

    25. Why did Jennifer feel at ease with the crocodile?

    A. She met it before.  B. She trusted her husband.

    C. She could protect herself. D. She longed for its company.

    26. What is the implied meaning of the underlined part in the last paragraph?

    A. Explore nature with curiosity.

    B. Respect nature while exploring it.

    C. Study nature while developing tourism.

    D. Protect nature through biological research.

    27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A. A Narrow Escape  B. A Risky Job

    C. An Underwater Assignment D. A Chance Meeting

    C

In July 2021, astronauts on board the International Space Station (ISS) planted pepper seeds as part of an experiment to test which plants could be successfully grown in space. The peppers were harvested four months later, and the team celebrated with a party and taste test.

For astronauts living mostly off prepackaged foods for months at a time on the ISS, fresh and flavourful produce is welcomed. With long missions to the Moon and Mars in focus, NASA is working to find sustainable ways for astronauts to enjoy fresh foods, which will add key nutrients to their diets and improve their state of mind.

Astronauts have grown radishes, zinnias and a variety of lettuces on board the ISS before, but this is the first time they grew peppers, which posed a new challenge, reports Elizabeth Howell for Space. com.

Biologists at the Kennedy Space Centre spent two years picking the perfect pepper. They wanted to try peppers because they’re a great source of vitamins and nutrients. and they can be eaten raw or cooked. Plus, peppers are fairly low maintenance (保养) to grow.

In June,a carrier delivered supplies to the ISS along with a package of 48 pepper seeds. Astronauts on board planted the seeds in a microwave oven-sized growing container. The conditions in it such as lighting, watering and air circulation were controlled by a crew based at the Kennedy Space Centre. On board, the astronauts collected data and offered feedback on the flavour of the peppers.

“This is important because the food astronauts eat needs to be as good as the rest of their equipment,” LaShelle Spencer, a plant scientist at NASA said over the summer. “To successfully send people to Mars and bring them back to Earth, we will not only require the most nutritious foods, but the best tasting ones as well.”

    28. Why did astronauts attempt to plant pepper in space?

    A. Only pepper can grow in space.

    B. There were no enough food for astronauts.

    C. Humans wanted to test which plants can grow in space.

    D. Pepper can grow better than other plants.

    29. What special benefits does pepper have compared with other plants?

    A. Its nutrients are the highest. B. It needn’t too much later care.

    C. It improves their state of mind most. D. The vitamins in it are the most.

    30. What does the underlined word “it” refer to in paragraph 5?

     A. Container. B. Package. C. Microwave. D. Seed.

    31. What can we infer from the text?

    A. Astronaut need special nutrition to keep the best state of mind.

    B. The idea that pepper is grown in space is silly.

    C. It is the carrier that is in charge of sending feedback on the peppers.

    D. Pepper can’t be eaten cooked in space but it can be eaten raw.

    D

Cars could soon be communicating with each other using 5G to make drivers aware of upcoming dangers, scientists claim. The ultra-fast mobile Internet would allow for rapid information transmission and could make drivers aware of black ice, pot holes or other dangers up ahead.

Several car manufacturers are already integrating 5G into their vehicles, including as a tool to welcome the coming of self-driving vehicles. Experts believe the high-speed connection will also improve the reliability and capability of automated vehicles to the point where they will be safer than the manual cars being driven today. They predict the number of road traffic accidents — which according to the World Health Organization (WHO) account for more than 1. 3 million deaths and up to 50 million people injured worldwide every year — will drop thoroughly as a result. Dr Dimitrios Liarokapis, a member of the research group, said: “With the help of 5G, an early warning system that alerts (……报警) drivers is possible within the next few years. Cars that are close enough to the danger area will send warning messages to other cars around them using short-range communication technologies, but also to cars further away using 5G, fast and reliably. Then those cars will transmit the same information to cars near them and so on, forming a joined-up, multi-vehicle communication chain that stretches far and wide.”

Automotive giant Ford is already working on connected cars. Earlier this year it revealed its intention to fit 80 percent of its 2020 vehicles with technology that warns drivers about up-coming road accidents, bad weather and traffic jams. The system pools data from other connected road users, emergency services and the authorities and sends it from the cloud directly to the car. Alerts are shown on the car’s dashboard display warning the driver about what lies around the corner.

    32. What can we expect of the cars in the future?

    A. They will be more personalized. B. They may replace other vehicles.

    C. They may be bigger. D. They will be safer.

    33. What is the function of the communication chain?

    A. To send warning messages.

    B. To collect drivers’ information.

    C. To send the traffic situation to the police.

    D. To track other drivers.

    34. How can 5G help reduce road accidents?

    A. By offering practical safety programs.

    B. By offering the fast mobile Internet.

    C. By helping WHO calculate traffic accidents.

    D. By helping drivers overcome dangers.

    35. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

    A. Connected cars are equipped with 5G. B. Ford is the first producer to use 5G.

    C. Cars of Ford are the most intelligent. D. Warning messages are shown on phones.

    No Time

With a broad smile on her lips, 15-year old Sirin rushed to her mom to show off her new painting. But mom raised her eyebrows with eyes wide open, and spoke in an impatient tone, “No time, baby. Right now I am busy with an important talk. Just wait for some time,OK?”

Holding her oil painting, she frowned (皱眉), and then searched for her dad.

“Dad, see what I have done,” Sirin announced aloud in a thrilling voice. Her dad turned around while adjusting his tie, grinned at her, and showed his thumbs up!

Immediately, blowing her two cheeks, Sirin replied angrily, “Dad, you haven’t seen it yet.”

He smiled at her saying, “No time, baby. I will see it later.” He just patted her back lovingly, kissed her forehead, and rushed for his office.

She was not a kid to be pleased with simple gesture or smile. She stood there for a few seconds, and then stormed off to her own bedroom. Hot air was blowing from her nostrils (鼻孔); her face turned into apple red. She threw the painting on the table, slammed (……砰地关上) the door and threw herself on her bed.

“Why is everybody so busy?” She recalled thousands of incidents that hurt her in pre-school, middle school and even in high school too! She assumed at least her own family members would give some values to her thoughts, but they were no exception. Unconsciously, her eyes were filled with tears.

The knocking sound on the door put a sudden brake to her thought. Her mom was calling her for dinner. Sirin deliberately came late to join them. She kept silent and didn’t look at anyone, scratching the table mat with her nail. Her mom was puzzled at the unusual behavior. Suddenly, the morning incident clicked in her mind. Softly, she asked, “Honey, did I do anything wrong?”

Paragraph 1: At this very moment, Sirin could no longer resist her anger.

Paragraph 2: When back from school the next day, Sirin was surprised to see her beautifully-decorated paining on the wall.
