The most eye-catching performance from the final weekend of the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials didn't break a world record or send a teenager to Tokyo. But Lindsay Flach still became the shining star. Lindsay Flach competed in the heptathlon(七项全能) 18 weeks pregnant and showed off a growing belly. Though she finished a distant last among the 15 women who made it through all seven events of the heptathlon, her participation this past weekend was a victory in itself.
The 2020 season was supposed to be Flach's last chance to compete in the heptathlon, the sport that developed into her enthusiasm over the past decade. She intended to grasp a chance on the U.S. Olympic team one final time before marrying her longtime boyfriend and starting a family together.
In early 2020, Flach quit her job, temporarily left her soon-to-be-husband behind and moved nearly 250 miles south to train with her new coach at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. She intended to remain there through the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials. Then the pandemic(疫情) struck three months into her training.
When the spread of COVID-19 forced the postponement(延迟) of the Tokyo Games and cast doubt on whether they would ever happen, Flach, 31, decided she could no longer put her life on hold. In March, Flach began struggling to hit marks that had previously been routine to her. She took a pregnancy test that came back positive, a result that made her doubt whether her Olympic hopeful.
The pregnancy weakened Flach's strength and energy but not her desire to say goodbye to track and field on her own terms. While Flach's final score was less than half her personal best, she's trying not to focus on that aspect, nor on the fact that she never qualified for an Olympics in her career. She's excited for what's to come in her life, excited she was able to participate in a third Olympic Trials and excited that she showed how strong would-be mothers can be.
24.When did Flach begin to love the heptatblon?

China's disability-related expense at all levels has increased year by year. Last year saw the completion of the National Ice Sports Arena for People With Impairments in light of the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games. The Games officially opened on March 4, marking not only a great event for the Olympic family, but also the advancement of China's path for developing the cause of people with disabilities.
Protection of those differently abled in employment, social security, public facilities, and education keeps improving in laws and regulations ensuring the rights and interests of persons with disabilities.
China has 85 million people with disabilities, who need more attention and help—from government and public alike. The possibility of people with disabilities falling back to poverty is high; the total amount of public services for people with physical impairments is not enough and their distribution remains uneven; their diverse needs, such as education, medical services, and recovery, are not adequately met; discrimination, too, still occurs; less developed and rural areas are not suitable for them.
According to the arrangements for the protection and development of people with disabilities during the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25) period issued in July 2021, basic systems providing multi-level social security will be in place by 2025 to ensure the livelihood of this social group continues to improve. By 2035, the differently abled will live a richer material and cultural life, and the gap between them and the average national level will have been remarkably narrowed.
To achieve these goals, the Chinese Government is revising regulations on the employment of those differently abled, aiming to help them live better and more fulfilled lives through their work. In addition, the country is accelerating the upgrading of the social security system, so that the differently abled with unstable income will be included in government aid under China's social safety net program.
28.What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.The problems people with disabilities meet.
B.The uneven distribution of medical services.
C.The poverty level of people with disabilities.
D.The growing attention to the differently abled.
29.What can people with disabilities benefit from the 14th Five-Year Plan?
A.Improving livelihood.
B.Basic commercial security.
C.The narrowed gap.
D.A materially satisfying life.
30.Which can best replace the underlined word “accelerating” in the last paragraph?
A.quickening. B.receiving. C.considering. D.assessing.
31.What is the author's attitude towards the growing disability-related expense?
A.Critical. B.Favorable. C.Objective. D.Uninterested.
D
Lake Baikal(贝加尔湖)is the biggest body of fresh water on Earth. It's about 1.6km in depth and is also the deepest. Several unusual animals call it home, including the world's only species of freshwater seal(海豹). There are a large number of Baikal seals, about 8, 000-10, 000. But the lake is nutrient-poor, so how they do so well has been a puzzle. A study conducted by Yuuki Watanabe of the National Institute of Polar Research, in Tokyo, suggests a possible answer.
Most seals eat fish. And Baikal seals do have needle-like teeth. But in 1982 researchers noted that they had some specialized comb-like teeth behind the needle-like ones. At the time, nobody knew what they were for. But Dr. Watanabe supposed that they might be an adaptation for feeding on other tiny creatures living in the lake.
Seals arrived in Baikal two million years ago, from the Arctic Ocean. So did some much smaller sea creatures, known as amphipods(片脚类动物). They have diversified into more than 340 native species. Sea creatures the size of seals would normally see amphipods to be too small to hunt. But Dr. Watanabe wondered if Baikal seals'comb-like teeth might have evolved to enable the seals to hunt these tiny creatures to make them useful prey(猎物)-just as some whales collect extremely small shellfish using comb-like structures. He and his colleagues therefore attached waterproof video cameras to a few seals to monitor what they were getting up to.
Scenes from the cameras showed that the seals were indeed pursuing the groups of amphipods at night. Dr. Watanabe estimated that each seal caught an average of 57 amphipods per dive and thus thousands of them a day. The needle-like teeth are not useless, for the seals do hunt fish as well. They compete with those fish for the amphipods, thus perhaps maintaining themselves in larger numbers.
32.Which aspect of Baikal seals remains unknown?
A.Why they live in Lake Baikal. B.How they got into Lake Baikal.
C.When they reached Lake Baikal. D.How they grow well in Lake Baikal.
33.What does the underlined word “they” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Researchers. B.Comb-like teeth.
C.Baikal seals. D.Needle-like teeth.
34.Why did researchers attach video cameras to the seals?
A.To take control of their behaviour patterns.
B.To record how they coexist with amphipods.
C.To confirm if they live on small water creatures.
D.To find the similarities between seals and whales.
35.What message is conveyed in the last paragraph?
A.There is a sharply growing trend towards Baikal seals.
B.Baikal seals prefer hunting amphipods at night.
C.Needle-like teeth are of little use to Baikal seals.
D.Baikal seals feed on fish besides amphipods.

Every time Jim crossed the street on his way to work, he would see a little girl selling flowers on the street. She sat by a large green board with the names of the flowers and their prices on it. Unfortunately, no one paid attention to her, and she rarely sold anything. Jim wanted to help her, and one day he got his chance. His aunt would retire, and he thought a bouquet (花束) would be a great gift.
“Hello, could you please make me a bouquet of roses?” Jim said as he approached the girl.
The girl didn't raise her head and just stared at the same spot on the ground. “I'm Cassy. Thank you for buying flowers from me,” she said. “Could you please select the flowers by yourself and give them to me? I will tie them together for you. I can't see. ”
“Oh, I'm sorry,” Jim said as he picked the flowers and handed them to her. Within several seconds, the girl made a lovely bouquet for Jim.
“Here,” she said, holding the bouquet. “That'll be $5.”
“Thanks. They're beautiful,” Jim said and walked away after placing the money in the hat beside Cassy.
The next day, Jim went to work and he decided to have a quick talk with Cassy on the way. However, he didn't see Cassy where she used to be that morning. He thought she might be late and decided to meet her the next day, but she didn't show up for the next few days in a row (连续地).

Do you still remember me?” “The one who bought roses?” “Yes, that’s me. I’m worried about you. You haven’t been here for days.” “Well, I am okay,” she said. “Mom suffered from an illness, and I had to look after her. She needs surgery (手术), so I have to work harder to earn more money.” Jim listened, and tears welled up in his eyes. He told Cassy that he wanted to visit her mother, and Cassy agreed.
Jim then drove to her home, where he met her sick mother, Jade. Jim noticed the poor conditions they were living in and decided to do something to help them. He posted their story online and many people offered help. Thanks to Jim and those kind-hearted people, Cassy’s mother underwent surgery and finally recovered.
