All about the FIFA World Cup: a thrilling festival of football
Get ready for the spectacular sporting event with our fact-packed tournament guide. On 20 November, the FIFA World Cup tournament kicks off in Qatar. Around five billion football fans around the world are expected to watch live on TV as the best men’s teams battle it out for football’s ultimate prize.
Who are some of the star players to watch?
From Son Hueng-min to Gareth Bale, there will be more top talent on show than ever in this tournament. It’s
the first time teams can take a squad of 26 players, rather than the usual 23. Sadly, it may be the last World Cup for two of the greatest players in the game: Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. It’s a chance for some fresh talent to shine, however: look out for younger players such as England’s Jude Bellingham, Germany’s Jamal Musiala and Pedri for Spain.
Which teams will be at the World Cup?
Thirty-two teams will compete for the trophy(奖杯). For the first time ever, Qatar will take part in the tournament. As hosts, they qualified automatically but the other 31 teams had to win a number of qualifying matches. The next World Cup in 2026 will be even bigger — forty-eight teams will be in competition.
Which teams are the favourites to win?
France is the current champion and one of the favourites to win again with a star-studded squad featuring strikers Kylian Mbappe and Karim Benzema. Other European teams hoping to do well include England, Germany, Portugal and Spain. Argentina, Brazil and Senegal are some of the strongest nations outside Europe. Wales is playing in its first World Cup since 1958, but Scotland and Northern Ireland did not qualify.
How does the tournament work?
The 32 teams have been drawn into eight groups of four. The teams in each group play each other once in a mini-league, and the top two from each group progress to the knockout stage. Teams must win that game, then a quarter-final and a semi-final to reach the final on 18 December. As well as the World Cup trophy for the winning team, there are individual trophies for the best player (Golden Ball) and top scorer (Golden Boot). England’s Captain Harry Kane won the Golden Boot in 2018.
What conditions will players face in this World Cup?
Since the first men’s World Cup in 1930, the tournament has been played in June and July. However, Qatar is
so hot in the summer that the 2022 competition was moved to November and December, when it’s cooler. It’s still warm, though, and each of the eight stadiums has air-conditioning. It will take the equivalent of 100 bathtubs of water a day just to keep the pitches in the stadiums green.
As well as a brand-new city and airport, seven spectacular new stadiums were built for this World Cup. Look
out for the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, which glows different colours at night; the Al Janoub Stadium, which is designed to look like the sails of a traditional Qatari boat; and a stadium built from 974 recycled shipping containers.
21. Who is likely not to attend the next World Cup in 2026?
A. Lionel Messi B. Gareth Bale C. Son Hueng-min D. Karim Benzema
22. Which of the following is correct according to the passage?
A. Senegal is one of the strongest nations outside Europe.
B. Qatar had to win a number of qualifying matches to be qualified
C. Golden Boot will be awarded to the best player
D. 48 teams are in Qatar World Cup competition.
23. What are the facilities in this World Cup?
A. A traditional Qatari boat for visitors B. A brand-new airport
C. 100 bathtubs for players D. Eight stadiums without air-conditioning
B
When I was a child, I was often asked at school who my role model was, the person that you admire and inspires you. I always mentioned different names: from the celebrity of the moment to my grandfather.
It was always difficult for me to choose a single person as a role model, because I liked different things from
different people. Based on the people that I admired and inspired me, I managed to create a custom role model in my mind.
For years there has been a constant struggle to achieve gender equality, and when I decided to study at my
university I leaned towards engineering because I wanted a challenge in my life, both intellectually and culturally. Back then, only 10% of the students were women. This certainly did not stop me. On the contrary, it was a determining factor for me to prove myself that I could handle something that was “not expected” for women.
Throughout my studies I realized that there was no difference between me and my teammates; we all had the
same possibilities and capabilities. However, my main challenge was determined by culture, as we grew up with certain values and social norms that told us that careers in science or engineering were not for women.
It was complicated and I had to go through uncomfortable situations, but pursuing a technical career brought
me many benefits, such as developing systematic thinking. This is a basic tool to create possibilities in the future and achieve a more rational understanding about the economic and social systems in which we live, and it allows you to have the possibility to become the architect of your own life.
When girls decide to pursue a technical career, they not only benefit themselves, but also help break the
stereotypes in their environment. They become agents of change capable of modifying existing structures.
It is like sowing seeds for the future. If we want a fairer world where women and men can decide on our future,
we have to involve girls starting today, encouraging them to explore technology and science. Sow a seed and in the future it will give you a tree with many fruits. This is not only an individual benefit but a collective one.
24. What did the author manage to do in her childhood?
A. Change her role models all the time. B. Find the basis for admiring a person.
C. Imagine a particular role model for herself. D. Treat her grandfather as a famous person.
25. What did the author want to prove by studying engineering?
A. Women have intellectual challenges. B. Women are different in capabilities.
C. Women achieved gender equality at work. D. Women are suitable for technical careers.
26. Why does the author give the example of systematic thinking?
A. To stress the benefits of technical careers. B. To explain its application in architecture.
C. To introduce this basic thinking tool. D. To show the possibilities it brings in life.
27. What does the author encourage girls to do?
A. Become famous models. B. Explore science and technology.
C. Struggle for gender equality. D. Decide on their own future.

Pieter Bruegel’s 1565 realistic painting The Harvesters hangs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. “The work describes farmers cutting wheat nearly as tall as they are,” Ghent University biologist Ive De Smet says. “Nowadays, if you walk through a wheat field, you basically see wheat is about knee-high, which is a consequence
of selective breeding (培育) from the second half of the 20th century.” De Smet says he’s teaming up with art
historian David Vergauwen of Amarant to look at things where they can spot differences in shape, in color, and in size. Wheat is just one example of how historical artwork can help track the transformation of food crops over time.
Friends since childhood, they took interest in plants in artwork and began with a visit to the Hermitage
Museum in Russia — where they noticed an odd-looking watermelon in an early-17th-century painting by Flemish artist Frans Snyders.
“So if you think of a watermelon, you cut it through, it should be dark red on the inside. But that one appeared
to be pale and white.” De Smet assumed the painter had done a poor job. But Vergauwen said, “This is one of the best painters ever from that era. So if he paints it like that, that’s the way it must have been.” Other paintings showed that both red and white watermelons were raised during the 17th century.
The team hopes to set up an online research database of historical plant artwork. They create a social media
hashtag (主题标签) for it. Anyone could send pictures of relevant artwork and details of plants when they visit a museum or exhibit through the hashtag. But, they add, the sources need to be realistic. “If you’re going to use, for example, Picasso to understand how a pear looked, you might be misled.”
28. What can we learn from De Smet’s words in paragraph 1?
A. Humans have mainly fed on wheat since 1565.
B. Selective breeding affects agricultural structure.
C. Wheat has gone through great changes in height.
D. The scene in The Harvesters may be unbelievable.
29. What is Vergauwen’s attitude to the watermelon painted by Frans Snyders?
A. Curious. B. Disapproving. C. Doubtful. D. Favorable.
30. Why is the social media hashtag created?
A. To collect more paintings for their database.
B. To encourage people to focus on art.
C. To advertise their research database.
D. To share some historical plant artwork.
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. Ancient paintings focused on food crops.
B. Old art reveals agricultural information.
C. Two men create a database of plant artwork.
D. Plants today are different from their ancestors.

When robots appear to engage with people and display human-like emotions, people may think of them as capable of “thinking”, or acting on their own beliefs and desires rather than their programs, according to the research published by the American Psychological Association.
“The relationship between human-like shape, human-like behavior and the tendency to attribute (把……归因
于) independent thought and intentional behavior to robots is yet to be understood,” said study author Agnieszka Wykowska, PhD, a principal investigator at the Italian Institute of Technology. “As artificial intelligence
increasingly becomes a part of our lives, it is important to understand how interacting with a robot that displays human-like behaviors might cause higher likelihood of attribution of intentional agency to the robot.”
Across three experiments involving 119 participants, researchers examined how individuals would see a
human-like robot, the iCub, after socializing with it and watching videos together. Before and after interacting with the robot, participants completed a questionnaire that showed them pictures of the robot in different situations and asked then to choose whether the robot’s motivation in each situation was mechanical or intentional.
The researchers found that participants who watched videos with the human-like robot were more likely to
rate the robot’s actions as intentional, rather than programmed, while those who only interacted with the machine-like robot were not. This shows that mere exposure to a human-like robot is not enough to make people believe it is capable of thoughts and emotions. It is human-like behavior that might be crucial for being deemed as an intentional agent.
According to Wykowska, these findings show that people might be more likely to believe artificial intelligence
is capable of independent thought when it creates the impression that it can behave just like humans. “This could inform the design of social robots of the future,” she said.
32. What were participants asked to do in the experiment?
A. Behave like a robot. B. Complete a questionnaire.
C. Show pictures of the robot. D. Watch the behavior of the iCub.
33. What does the underlined word “deemed” in paragraph4 probably mean?
A. Believed. B. Persuaded. C. Performed. D. Advocated.
34. What could the findings be applied to?
A. Addressing some technique problems.
B. Creating social robots just like humans.
C. Guiding the design of future social robots.
D. Developing artificial intelligence industry.
35. What would be a suitable title for the text?
A. Human-like robots can interact with humans
B. Human-like robots can behave just like humans
C. Artificial intelligence has become part of our lives
D. Human-like robots may be believed to have mental states
第二节(共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Emotional regulation (情绪管理) is taking any action that changes the intensity of an emotional experience.
36 . It refers to the ability to effectively control our emotions through various approaches. We are expected to
manage our emotions in ways that are socially acceptable. There are a number of skills that can help us
self-regulate our emotions.
37
Emotions happen fast. We don’t think “now I will be angry” — we just suddenly have fires in our eyes and become extremely angry. So the number one skill in regulating difficult emotions is to pause. Take a breath. Slow down the moment between trigger (触发) and response.
Noticing what you feel
An equally important skill involves the ability to become aware of what you’re feeling. Dr. Judson Brewer,
MD Ph.D. recommends practices for becoming more curious about your own physical reactions. In what parts of
your body are you noticing feelings? Is your stomach upset? Is your heart racing? 38 . Looking into what is
happening to you physically can also draw away your focus and reduce the intensity of the emotion.
Naming what you feel
After noticing what you feel, the ability to name it can help you get control of what is happening. Ask yourself:
What would you call the emotions you’re feeling? Is it anger, sadness, or disappointment? 39 .
Accepting the emotion
40 . Rather than beating yourself up for feeling angry or scared, recognize that your emotional reactions
are acceptable. Try to practice self-sympathy and give yourself respect. Recognize that experiencing emotions is a normal human reaction.
A. Creating space
B. Predicting what you feel
C. It doesn’t mean preventing or avoiding emotions
D. Emotions come and go so that you barely notice them
E. Identifying emotions will help you share your feelings with others
F. Emotions are a normal and natural part of how we respond to situations
G. Your physical reactions can reflect what you are experiencing emotionally

A Real Hero
Mindy had a pet dog. She took him for a walk every day. Usually she took him to a park near her house. The park was next to a river. Many people took their dogs there. Almost all the dog owners knew each other. They often stopped and had a talk.
For Mindy, it had been a happy place until a homeless man moved into the park. He usually slept under a tree
near the river. He was very dirty. He had no teeth, and his clothes were old. He even sometimes talked to himself. Mindy was a bit frightened. When she went to the park, she tried to stay close to other dog walkers. She was unwilling to meet the scary man.
Then winter came and it was cold and wet in the park. The homeless man didn’t have warm clothes and
seemed as if he couldn’t bear to go through the winter.
One morning when Mindy was walking in the park, she encountered the homeless man again. To Mindy’s surprise, he was wearing a warm yellow hat that was quite new and clean. He walked towards her, smiling and pointing at his hat. Mindy was so scared that she ran as quickly as she could. “Mindy!” one of the dog walkers called out to her. It was Alison. Mindy ran towards her.
“Mindy! He is harmless! He won’t hurt you! He just wants to show you his new hat! He is so happy,”
explained Alison. But Mindy still felt bad. “I’m sorry, but where did he get the hat?” Mindy asked. “I bought it for him. I saw it in the $2 shop. It is so cold and he is so poor. I wanted to do something for him,” answered Alison. “It’s very kind of you,” said Mindy with a smile.
Over the following few days the weather became even worse. It rained all day and all night. Mindy didn’t
want to enter the park. Though she felt OK, she was still afraid of the homeless man. So she just took her dog for a walk along the streets outside the park instead.
注意:
1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One night when Mindy was watching the TV news, the words “Homeless hero saves a man and a child!” appeared.
