Twenty-five years ago on July 1, 1997, I woke up very late in my apartment in Singapore. I jumped out of bed in a little bit of panic. I woke up my 8-year-old daughter Avy, who was not exactly in a hurry to get out of bed. “We’re late for school,” I half-yelled at her. I finally got her into the shower, dressed her hurriedly and made it to the nearby bus stop in time. Thankfully, the school was only two stops away. We got in, rubbing our eyes as the sunlight streamed into the bus.
Her mom had flown to Hong Kong several days earlier on assignment for a newspaper to cover the handover of the city’s return to China.
I had taken off from work for a week to help look after our daughter. I would pick up my daughter from school around midday. At the end of the day, I would watch the news on TV, which would lead the entire week with the historic events happening in Hong Kong. I would wonder where my wife was in the crowd that was gathered to witness the handover.
The year, 1997, was tense because the Asian financial crisis began. The Thai baht (泰铢) was hit, followed by the South Korean won (韩元) and, like a contagious virus which spreads rapidly, the financial system seized up. For that week though, that was the least of my worries. I just made sure we did not have a repeat of July 1, when we were nearly late for school. My wife was very busy during the handover, chasing down stories in Hong Kong as the British flag was lowered for the last time.
I later spent a few years working in Hong Kong, but my enduring memory of the days surrounding its return to China was the time I spent as a babysitter, although it is kind of hard to call an 8-year-old a baby. The whole thing was a lifetime ago. But it is a good memory.

While it may sound like something that has crawled (爬) out of your nightmares, cyborg cockroaches (蟑螂) have arrived as friends rather than enemies. Researchers from Japan’s RIKEN Cluster for Pioneering Research have designed a new remote-controlled insect, equipped with a battery “backpack” that is powered by solar panels.
The cyborg cockroach, which is part insect and part machine, is intended to enter dangerous areas, monitor the environment or undertake search and rescue missions without needing to be recharged.
Famously able to survive a nuclear war, cockroaches have been the inspiration for a number of technologies in recent years. The cockroaches are still alive, but wires attached to their two “cerci” — sensory organs on the end of their stomachs—send electrical impulses that cause the insect to move right or left. A battery is necessary for the sending and receiving of these electrical signals, which needs to be charged up.
While it’s possible to build docking stations for recharging the battery, the need to return and recharge could disrupt time-sensitive missions. The RIKEN team wanted to create a more practical version when it ran out of power. Therefore, they designed an on-board solar cell that could continuously ensure that the cockroach stays charged while it works.
However, cockroaches have a limited surface area available for all the components necessary to move its legs and keep it powered. The solution, published in npj Flexible Electronics, was to design a special “backpack” that could neatly carry both the wireless leg-control module and rechargeable lithium polymer (锂聚合物) battery.
This was attached to the top of the insect on its chest, and was 3D printed to fit perfectly to the curved surface of the Madagascar cockroach. It allowed for this electronic device to be stably mounted on the insect for over a month, while leaving space elsewhere on the body to implant the solar panel.

Recent studies suggest global food production is responsible for one-third of all planet-heating emissions, with the use of animals for meat accounting for twice the pollution of producing plant based foods. Forests that absorb carbon dioxide are cut down for raising animals while fertilisers used for growing their feed are rich in nitrogen (氮), which can contribute to air and water pollution, climate change and ozone depletion (臭氧损耗). Livestock also produces large quantities of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.
A Dutch city will become the first in the world to ban meat advertisements from public spaces in an effort to reduce consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
Haarlem, which lies to the west of Amsterdam and has a population of about 160,000, will pass the prohibition from 2024 after meat was added to a list of products thought to contribute to the climate crisis. Ads will not be allowed on Haarlem’s buses, shelters and screens in public spaces, prompting the complaint from the meat sector that local authority is “going too far in telling people what’s best for them”.
Ziggy Klazes, who drafted the proposal banning meat advertising, said she had not known the city would be the world’s first to enforce such a policy when she proposed it. She told a radio channel: “We do not prohibit what people are baking and roasting in their own kitchen; if people wanted to continue eating meat, fine... We can’t tell people there’s a climate crisis and encourage them to buy products that are part of the cause.”
The ban also covers holiday flights, fossil fuels and cars that run on fossil fuels. The ban is delayed until 2024 due to existing contracts with companies that sell the products. Research suggests that to meet the EU target of net zero emissions by 2050, meat consumption must be reduced to 24kg per person per year, compared with the current average of 82kg.

In recent years, there has been a great deal of discussion about empathy (共情). It has been argued that a lack of empathy has led to several social problems. 36 It is a complex construct. According to psychologist Mark Davis, there are three important types of empathy. Let’s explore each type and the possible impact of each.
Perspective-Taking
This is a more cognitive (认知的) form of empathy, and it involves being able to see things from others’ perspectives. 37 Our research shows that perspective-taking is very important in social interactions and for leaders because they need to understand the people they lead and manage to motivate them effectively.
Empathic Concern
It is what we most commonly think of as being empathic. This is being able to “read” other people’s emotions and feelings and to feel appropriate concern for them. Counselors and therapists need it to deeply understand clients’ feelings but not actually experience the other’s emotions. 38
Personal Distress
This is indirectly experiencing others’ emotions. If they are happy, we feel happy; if they’re sad, we cry with them. 39
40 In reality, we all have some level of each of the types of empathy. The key is to understand how we are empathic with others and realize the strengths and limitations of each type of empathy.

Twenty-five years ago on July 1, 1997, I woke up very late in my apartment in Singapore. I jumped out of bed in a little bit of panic. I woke up my 8-year-old daughter Avy, who was not exactly in a hurry to get out of bed. “We’re late for school,” I half-yelled at her. I finally got her into the shower, dressed her hurriedly and made it to the nearby bus stop in time. Thankfully, the school was only two stops away. We got in, rubbing our eyes as the sunlight streamed into the bus.

I had taken off from work for a week to help look after our daughter. I would pick up my daughter from school around midday. I would wonder where my wife was in the crowd that was gathered to witness the handover.
The year, 1997, was tense because the Asian financial crisis began. The Thai baht (泰铢) was hit, followed by the South Korean won (韩元) and, like a contagious virus which spreads rapidly, the financial system seized up. For that week though, that was the least of my worries. I just made sure we did not have a repeat of July 1, when we were nearly late for school. My wife was very busy during the handover, chasing down stories in Hong Kong as the British flag was lowered for the last time.
I later spent a few years working in Hong Kong, but my enduring memory of the days surrounding its return to China was the time I spent as a babysitter, although it is kind of hard to call an 8-year-old a baby. The whole thing was a lifetime ago. But it is a good memory.

While it may sound like something that has crawled (爬) out of your nightmares, cyborg cockroaches (蟑螂) have arrived as friends rather than enemies. Researchers from Japan’s RIKEN Cluster for Pioneering Research have designed a new remote-controlled insect, equipped with a battery “backpack” that is powered by solar panels.
The cyborg cockroach, which is part insect and part machine, is intended to enter dangerous areas, monitor the environment or undertake search and rescue missions without needing to be recharged.
Famously able to survive a nuclear war, cockroaches have been the inspiration for a number of technologies in recent years. The cockroaches are still alive, but wires attached to their two “cerci” — sensory organs on the end of their stomachs—send electrical impulses that cause the insect to move right or left. A battery is necessary for the sending and receiving of these electrical signals, which needs to be charged up.
While it’s possible to build docking stations for recharging the battery, the need to return and recharge could disrupt time-sensitive missions. The RIKEN team wanted to create a more practical version when it ran out of power. Therefore, they designed an on-board solar cell that could continuously ensure that the cockroach stays charged while it works.
However, cockroaches have a limited surface area available for all the components necessary to move its legs and keep it powered. The solution, published in npj Flexible Electronics, was to design a special “backpack” that could neatly carry both the wireless leg-control module and rechargeable lithium polymer (锂聚合物) battery.
This was attached to the top of the insect on its chest, and was 3D printed to fit perfectly to the curved surface of the Madagascar cockroach. It allowed for this electronic device to be stably mounted on the insect for over a month, while leaving space elsewhere on the body to implant the solar panel.

Recent studies suggest global food production is responsible for one-third of all planet-heating emissions, with the use of animals for meat accounting for twice the pollution of producing plant based foods. Forests that absorb carbon dioxide are cut down for raising animals while fertilisers used for growing their feed are rich in nitrogen (氮), which can contribute to air and water pollution, climate change and ozone depletion (臭氧损耗). Haarlem, which lies to the west of Amsterdam and has a population of about 160,000, will pass the prohibition from 2024 after meat was added to a list of products thought to contribute to the climate crisis. Ads will not be allowed on Haarlem’s buses, shelters and screens in public spaces, prompting the complaint from the meat sector that local authority is “going too far in telling people what’s best for them”.
Ziggy Klazes, who drafted the proposal banning meat advertising, said she had not known the city would be the world’s first to enforce such a policy when she proposed it. She told a radio channel: “We do not prohibit what people are baking and roasting in their own kitchen; if people wanted to continue eating meat, fine... We can’t tell people there’s a climate crisis and encourage them to buy products that are part of the cause.”
The ban also covers holiday flights, fossil fuels and cars that run on fossil fuels. The ban is delayed until 2024 due to existing contracts with companies that sell the products. M: Electric vehicles (EVs) are a strong weapon in the world’s efforts against global warming. But the effects of EVs depend on what country you are in. A study shows that sales of electric cars are rising the fastest in Europe. ⑰Data from the Radiant Energy Group suggests that EVs in Poland and Kosovo actually create more carbon emissions because their electric systems depend so much on coal. In other European countries, however, EVs result in reduced emissions. The carbon gas reduction depends on what energy supplies electricity systems and the time of day vehicles are charged. ⑱The countries which showed the lowest carbon gas savings from EVs were Cyprus at 4 percent, Serbia 15 percent, Estonia 35 percent and the Netherlands 37 percent. An EV driver in Germany reduces greenhouse gas emission by 55 percent over a gasoline car. Germany uses a mix of renewable energy and coal to produce electricity. ⑲Germany and Spain create a lot of electricity from the sun and wind. But the sun and wind do not add to a country’s electricity system equally throughout the day. For this reason, the amount of carbon emissions saved by driving an EV depends on the time of day it is being charged. ⑳Charging in the afternoon, when there is more sun and wind, saves 16 to 18 percent more carbon than at night when electricity systems are more likely to be using gas or coal.
