When Mary Moore began her high school in 1951, her mother told her, “Be sure and take a typing course so when this show business thing doesn’t work out, you’ll have something to rely on.” “From that moment on, the very last thing I ever thought about doing was taking a typing course,” Mary recalls.
The show business thing worked out, of course. In her career, Mary won many awards. Only recently, when she began to write Growing Up Again, did she regret ignoring her mom, “I don’t know how to use a computer,” she admits.
Unlike her 1995 autobiography, After All, her second book is less about life as an award-winning actress and more about living with diabetes. All the money from the book is intended for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). “I felt there was a need for a book like this,” she says. “I didn’t want to lecture, but I wanted other diabetics to know that things get better when we’re self-controlled and do our part in managing the disease.”
But she hasn’t always practiced what she teaches, in her book, she describes that awful day, almost 40 years ago when she received two pieces of life-changing news. First, she had lost the baby she was carrying, and second, tests showed that she had diabetes. In a childlike act, she left the hospital and treated herself to a box of doughnuts. Year would pass before she realized she had to grow up again and take control of her diabetes. Only then did she kick her three-pack-a-day cigarette habit, overcome her addiction to alcohol, and begin to follow a balanced diet.
Although her disease has forced her to the sidelines of the dance floor, she refuses to fall into self-pity. “Everybody on earth can ask, ‘why me?’ about something or other,” she insists. “It doesn’t do any good. No one is immune to pain and disappointments. Sometimes we can make things better by helping others. I want to speak out and be as helpful as I can be.”
4. Mary’s mother asked Mary to take a typing course because she thought_________.
A. Mary had a talent for computer science
B. Mary failed to achieve her ambition
C. Mary might need a meal ticket for life
D. Mary was unable to complete her high school
5. Which of the following can best describe Mary’s intention of writing Growing Up Again?
A. Donating all her money to JDRF.
B. Giving people with diabetes hope.
C. Informing readers of her painful days with diabetes.
D. Showing how successful her show business is.
6. How did Mary react when she received the life-changing news?
A. She tried to get a treatment.
B. She lost control of herself.
C. She behaved in an adult way.
D. She began a balanced diet.
7. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Mary felt pity for herself.
B. What Mary did helped her recover from her illness.
C. Mary’s hook was published and then became well-known.
D. Mary’s experience of being ill inspired her to help others.
【答案】4. C 5. B 6. B 7. D

Some events have been added to the 2024 Olympias, with breakdancing, surfing, and sport climbing among the recent additions. A group of terms come with them that are foreign to the French language. Some French-language purists point out it’s too much to bear to rely on English to praise surfers on their “nose riding”— standing on the front of the board. They’ve decided they need a French solution.
The French government has created a team of language experts devoted to promoting the national language. They will meet periodically over the next couple of years to identify and define new sports terms. The French battle against the influence of other languages isn’t new. In 1994, the Toubon law was passed, forcing the use of French in all government publications, contracts and advertisements.Yet it contained several loopholes (漏洞), which allow brands and companies to extensively use English. As a result, anglicisms-words from the English language used in another language-are becoming more obvious.
Julie Neveux, linguistics professor at Sorbonne University in Paris, said anglicisms are “sometimes estimated at just under 5% of the present vocabulary, but they are disturbing because they show that we follow an economy and cultural model other than our own.” They are particularly present in sports competitions and events, during which athletes from around the world are used to communicating in English. “Sport was one of the first areas to be globalized,” said sports historian Michael Attali.
Despite their best efforts, no committee has successfully prevented English from influencing everyday language. “Similar committees have been put in place in the past, but nothing has changed so far,” said Attali.
“There are far fewer anglicisms in French than there are French words in English.” said Neveux, adding these exchanges should not be seen as a threat. “All living languages exist by borrowing from each other. Languages only exist thanks to their impurity.”
8. What goal will the team of language experts try to achieve according to Paragraph 2?
A. To speed up the spread of French in the world.
B. To make French influence other languages.
C. To promote national brands and companies.
D. To decide on some new French sports terms.
9. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. English words.
B. Anglicisms.
C. French expressions.
D. Newly created phrases.
10. What’s the result of the previous efforts to stop English from influencing other languages?
A. Fruitless.
B. Remarkable.
C. Important.
D. Unmentioned.
11. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. English is the most popular of all.
B. All languages should stay pure.
C. Neveux welcomes the impurity of language.
D. The exchanges between languages should be avoided.
【答案】8. D 9. B 10. A 11. C

【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“Similar committees have been put in place in the past, but nothing has changed so far(过去也有类似的委员会,但到目前为止没有任何改变)”可知,以前阻止英语渗透到法语的努力结果是徒劳的。故选A。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段““There are far fewer anglicisms in French than there are French words in English.” said Neveux, adding these exchanges should not be seen as a threat. “All living languages exist by borrowing from each other. Languages only exist thanks to their impurity.”(“法语中的英语词汇远远少于英语中的法语单词。”Neveux补充说,这些交换不应被视为威胁。“所有现存的语言都是通过相互借鉴而存在的。语言之所以存在,是因为它们存在不纯性。”)”可推知,Neveux对语言的不纯性持肯定态度。故选C。
D
From crystal-blue lakes to snow-capped mountains and thousand-year-old trees, Canada’s nature is admired around the world. Now it might also be just what the doctor ordered. An ambitious new programme allows doctors to write prescriptions (处方) for free annual passes to Canada’s national parks, encouraging their patients to improve their health—both mental and physical—by taking a stroll in nature.
The prescriptions are provided by PaRX, in partnership with Parks Canada. The first passes were handed out last month, giving holders access to more than 80 national parks, historic sites and nature reserves. PaRX, a health initiative launched in 2019 by the British Columbia Parks Foundation, notes on its wehsite that spending time in nature can lead to longer lives, increased energy, reduced stress and anxiety, improved heart health, less pain and beller mood. Vitamin D from the sun’s rays has proven health benefits. The organization also hopes that the prescriptions will boost investment in conservation in Canada.
The initial provision covers four Canadian provinces: British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Ontario and Manitoba. Participating doctors have only 100 annual passes to hand out for now, but PaRX hopes that the programme will be expanded.
“Medical research now clearly shows the positive health benefits of connecting with nature,”Steven Guilbeault, the environment minister, said. “I am confident this programme will quickly show its enormous value to the well-being of patients as it continues to expand throughout the country.”
Canada’s physicians are already in the habit of prescribing “nature therapy” as a treatment for anxiety, depression, high blood pressure, immune function and insomnia (失眠). Previously, though, they would write more general prescriptions, such as spending time in nature twice a week, for at least 20 minutes at a time. This is the first time that they have been able to equip their patients with tickets.
12. Why does the author mention Canada’s nature in Paragraph 1?
A. To promote doctors’ prescriptions.
B. To introduce Canada’s natural scenery.
C. To present a health initiative program.
D. To describe a current health condition.
13. Which of the following is the main benefit of the prescriptions?
A. A growth in travelling.
B. Development in health.
C. Preservation in conservation.
D. A boom in the economy.
14. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. “Nature therapy” is no longer just in theory.
B. The previous “nature therapy” is rejected.
C. It is a common practice to offer patients park tickets.
D. Patients doubt the original prescriptions.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A Nature Cures Mental Diseases
B. Doctors Order a Walk in The Wilderness
C. Canada Enjoys Admirable Nature
D. Canadian Doctors Obtain Access to Parks
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. A 15. B

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My mom only had one eye. I hated her! She was such an embarrassment. She cooked for students and teachers to support the family. There was one day during elementary school when my mom came to say hello to me. I was so embarrassed. How could she do this to me? I ignored her, threw her a hateful look and ran out.
The next day at school one of my classmates said, “Your mom only has one eye!” I wanted to bury myself. I also wanted my mom to just disappear. I confronted her that day and said, “If you’re only going to make me a laughing stock, why don’t you just die?” My mom did not respond. I didn’t even stop to think for a second about what I had said, because I was full of anger, totally unaware of her feelings.
I wanted to get out of that house, and have nothing to do with her. So I studied real hard, and finally got a chance to go abroad for further study. Then, I got married with a local man. I bought a house of my own. I had kids of my own. I was happy with my life, my kids and the comforts.
Years passed, and I didn’t hear from my mom ever since I had left home. Sometimes I would think of her but every time thinking of the embarrassment brought by her embarrassingly one-eyed look, I still hoped that life would stay the same way and she would never appear in my life again.
Then one day, my mom came to visit me. She hadn’t seen me in years and she didn’t even meet her grandchildren. When she stood by the door, my children was scared to cry and ran to me. I calmed them down and asked my husband to lead them into the house.
I turned to her, looking at her weary face with more wrinkles and her gray hair. Obviously she was older and life surely didn’t treat her well. However, the uninvited visit still made me angry.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version
I asked her why she showed up at our front door uninvited. A disappointed and bitter smile flashing through her face, she finally gathered her strength and courage to tell me the reason for her appearance. “I’ve been sorry for the embarrassment I have brought to you because of my one-eye look.” she said, “But even with one eye, I still see no one but you as the whole world to me.” Somehow, a sense of guilty began to rise in my heart. She continued, “I came today because I got cancer. With the remaining time, I’d like to know my grandchildren and, more importantly, my daughter is doing well.”
I was saddened by the news she just shared, but what truly astonished me was what she told me next about her eve. She paused for a while so as to catch her breath. Then she revealed the secret of that lost eye. “When you were two years old, an accident happened and you lost the eyesight of your one eye. Unable to bear the fact that my baby would be living in a half-dark world, I volunteered to donate my one eye to you.” I was totally petrified on hearing the truth, tears of regret pouring down my face. “Don’t cry my baby, because you will see this beautiful world for me even when I am no longer there”. Rushing to her, I hugged her so tightly that I told myself I would never leave her again.
