The Terracotta Army

It is a collection of thousands of life-size terracotta soldiers, horses, and chariots (战车) in battle formation, showing the emperor’s armies in full splendor.
Ancient City Wall
Xi’an City Wall was built in the 14th century by Zhu Yuanzhang, the first Emperor of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) as a military defense system. Now it is one of the oldest and best-preserved Chinese city walls. The wall is now a landmark, dividing the city into inner and outer areas.
Giant Wild Goose Pagoda
One of China’s most famous Buddhist pagodas, the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda was built in the Tang Dynasty (618-907) for the study of Buddhist scriptures. One of the main functions of the pagoda was to store sutras (经文) brought to China from India by the famous monk and traveler Xuan Zang. It was built with layers of bricks and has a grand structure and appearance. It is exemplary of traditional Chinese architecture.
Shaanxi History Museum
The Shaanxi History Museum is home to over 370,000 precious relics unearthed in Shaanxi over the years. Loneliness is significant mental health concern and can raise risk of death by 45% and contact with nature in cities significantly reduces feelings of loneliness, according to a team of scientists.
The study is the first to assess how the environment can affect loneliness. It used real-time data, collected via a smartphone app, rather than relying on people’s memory of how they were feeling.
The research found that feelings of overcrowding increased loneliness by an average of 30%. But when people were able to see trees or hear birds, feelings of loneliness fell by 28%. Feelings of social inclusion also cut loneliness by 21% and when these feelings coincided(巧合) with contact with nature, the beneficial effect was boosted by a further 18%.
The findings pointed to interventions to reduce loneliness. The researchers said, “Specific measures that increase social inclusion-and contact with nature should be taken, especially in thickly populated cities.” Time spent in nature is known to boost well-being, with woodland walks estimated to save the UK at least £185m a year in mental health costs, for example.
The research collected data from urban citizens across the world using the Urban Mind search app. More than 750 people provided 16,600 of these assessments. The participants were self-selecting and so it did not provide a representative sample of the wider populations. But when the researchers took age, education, and occupation into account, the benefits of nature contact and feelings of social inclusion on loneliness remained strongly statistically significant. Johanna Gibbons, part of the research team, said, “Cities are probably the only habitat that is increasing at a high rate. So we should be creating urban habitats where people can thrive(兴旺).”
4. How was the research conducted?
A. By relying on people’s memory.
B By surveying 750 paricipants.
C. By collecting data through a smartphidoapp.
D. By checking a worldwide representative ample.
5. What can we learn from Paragraph 4?
A. Many big cities take the lead in the research.
B. Time spent indoors improves people’s well-being.
C. Woodland walks greatly reduce social contact with people.
D. Interventions to reduce loneliness benefit the UK financially.
6. What ean be inferred about the research?
A. The findings are statistically markable.
B. It offers a wide range of samples globally.
C. The carefully selected participants are Defiable.
D. Many factors are considered except eduction.
7. What’s the text mainly about?
A. The mental problems of living in big cities.
B. Reducing loncliness in cities via contact with nature.
C. Developing urban habitats at a high speod.
D. Research on how to get rid of loneliness in nature.
C 5. D 6. A 7. B

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a frequent topic of conversation for most of us over the past year. As we dreamt of indoor dining, vacations, and hugging our friends again, my friend Ana texted that her mother, living in Brazil, had been infected by the coronavirus. I won’t go into details here, but the disruption to life in Brazil have been especially upsetting considering their social and cultural norms (规范).
Ana is Brazilian, and I’m from the US. While living in New York City, we became fast friends despite the few awkward cultural differences I learned to deal with. She was comfortable with intimacy; I preferred to keep my distance. She liked the company of many; I liked the friendship of few. It was awkward for me to lean in for a quick hug, only to be embraced then kissed on the cheeks. To this day, I’m not an excellent cheek kisser, but I try. She is one of many people over the years who have educated me, in a way, about delighting in cultural difference.
I called Ana to check on her mother and I was primarily curious about how social and cultural norms have been affected. It’s difficult, said Ana, because the necessary health regulations are opposite to “what we believe and everything we know about living in a community and displaying feelings of love”, but she hasn’t given up hope. I asked if the shifts made during the pandemic will change cultural norms. “Absolutely not,” said Ana. This is who Brazilians are in nature and change doesn’t happen overnight. They spend a lot of time and energy investing in relationships, and the deeply rooted social conventions won’t change quickly.
Over the years, Ana has shared many stories that emphasize the differences in our upbringing. I delight in our differences, even if kissing on the cheek makes me uncomfortable. We find our commonalities, like talking with our hands, being expressive, and valuing community. And we learn from our differences. COVID disrupted many things, but through all of this, Ana said, we must constantly be adjusting, understanding, and doing what’s best for our communities and the people we love.
8. Which of the following words can best replace the underlined word in Paragraph 1?
A Adjustment. B. Disturbance.
C. Commitment. D. Preference.
9. What can we learn about Ann from Paragraph 2?
A She is good at educating other people.
B. She prefers to stay alone in her own comfort zone.
C. She enjoys the close contact with others.
D. It took a long time for her to make friends with me.
10. Why doesn’t Ana think the pandemic will change social and cultural norms?
A. Because the Brazilians are born to be sociable.
B. Because the social conventions are easy to change.
C. Because the health regulations consist with her beliefs.
D. Because Brazilians rarely value investment in relationships.
11. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. My Attitude towards Friendship
B. Social and Cultural norms in the Pandemic
C. The Influence of COVID-19 on Life
D. My Acceptance of Cultural Differences
B 9. C 10. A 11. D

根据划线词所在句“I won’t go into details here, but the disruption to life in Brazil have been especially upsetting considering their social and cultural norms(规范).(在这里我就不细说了,但考虑到巴西的社会和文化规范,这种对生活的disruption尤其令人不安)”中“have been especially upsetting(尤其令人不安)”可推知,划线词是指对生活造成打扰或破坏 ,所以尤其令人不安。
根据第二段“She was comfortable with intimacy; I preferred to keep my distance.(她对亲密无间感到很自在;我宁愿保持距离)”可知,即便有新冠疫情的影响,安娜仍喜欢与人亲近。
根据第三段“I asked if the shifts made during the pandemic will change cultural norms. “Absolutely not,” said Ana. This is who Brazilians are in nature and change doesn’t happen overnight. They spend a lot of time and energy investing in relationships, and the deeply rooted social conventions won’t change quickly.(我问,大流行期间的转变是否会改变文化规范。“绝对不行,”安娜说。这就是巴西人的本性,改变不会在一夜之间发生。他们花大量的时间和精力在人际关系上,根深蒂固的社会习俗不会很快改变)”可推知,安娜认为大流行不会改变社会和文化规范,是因为巴西人天生善于交际,在人际关系上投入了大量的时间和精力,根深蒂固的社会习俗不会很快改变。故选A。

As new year approaches, crowds around the world may be expecting fireworks to light up the sky. But the fireworks could finally lose their appeal with the growing use of drones (无人机) for light shows. One obvious example was drone light show in the opening ceremony of Tokyo Olympics.
Ollie Howitt, a technician at SkyMagic, which used 300 drones to create a display for London’s new year celebration, said demand had increased substantially. She added that drones were increasingly able to fly in greater density and for longer. Howitt also said there were benefits of drones, “They give out no pollutants, they’re reusable, and there’s no fallout or that kind of thing. So in that sense they are a very sensible choice.”
Robert Neff, the general manager at Mercia Harbor, also said the decision to use a drone display at the harbor was down to a number of factors, including the impact of fireworks on animals — from wildlife to the pets of boat owners. “They’ve often commented on how much suffering is caused to their pets by the fireworks,” he said.
But not everyone agrees. Hans Rosling, a spokesperson from the British Fireworks Association said drones could also pose environmental problems. “Suggestions are that drones have less of an impact on the environment, but we have concerns about electrical demand and use of lithium (锂) batteries which are known not to be all that ‘green’,” he said. “The impact of firework use on the environment has been shown to be minor and very short-lived and recent studies have suggested that there is likely to be more pollution from a couple of cars driving to an event than caused by fireworks at an event.”
And there are issues with drone light displays, which need to receive specific safety approval from certain authorities. Some suggest the use of drones doesn’t mean shutting off fireworks. The bangs of fireworks create a sound feeling that is hard to replace. Meanwhile, others prefer the chance to tell stories in the sky by using a series of image.
12. Why does the writer talk about the Tokyo Olympics in Para 1?
A. To attract readers’ attention to the Olympics.
B. To advocate setting off fireworks in the new year.
C. To introduce the popular use of drones for light shows.
D. To highlight people’s celebration of this opening ceremony.
13. What did Ollie Howitt think of drone displays?
A. They bring environmental problems.
B. They cause little suffering to the pets.
C. They add color to the new year celebration.
D. They are economical and environmentally-friendly.
14. Which of the following did Hans Rosling agree with?
A. Firework displays last shorter than drone displays.
B. The pollution from fireworks isn’t as much as people think.
C. Drones have less impact on the environment than fireworks.
D. People should abandon the drone displays because of lithium batteries.
15. What are people’s attitudes towards drone light displays?
A. Controversial. B. Favorable. C. Cautious. D. Neutral.
C 13. D 14. B 15. A

On Friday evening, Emmett and I went to a movie as scheduled. After purchasing the tickets and drinks, we entered the cinema with delight beforehand, waiting for the beginning of the movie.
When I got up in the middle of the movie, Emmett whispered, “Carter, where are you going?” “I forgot to call my mom to tell her what time to pick us up.” I whispered back, leaving my jacket on the seat.
I squeezed past the people in my row, trying not to step on any feet while still watching the screen. I didn’t want to miss a thing. Balfour, the good guy in the movie, was trapped in an underground cave.
When I came back, Balfour’s flashlight almost went out. An enormous snake was moving toward him, twisting its body. Balfour struggled to loosen the chains around his hands and feet to reach his magic cape. With the cape around him, he could completely disappear.
I crawled back across eight people (I counted on the way out), never taking my eyes off the screen. I sat down in my seat slowly, then picked up my drink, and swallowed it quickly. But suddenly my brain said, “That’s not coke. That’s lemonade.” I looked down at the cup, just as the girl next to me shouted, “He drank my lemonade!”
“ Shhhh!” the people around us said, making quiet complaints.
“ Where’s Emmett?” I asked, as if the girl had hidden him under her seat.
“ Carter, down here,” Emmett answered in a low voice. He was two rows ahead of me. I was in the wrong row! Everyone was turning around to look at me.
“ Here,” I said, handing the girl her drink.
“Eww,” she said. “You have had a drink of it, so you owe me a lemonade.”
“Shhhh!” everyone said again.
“OK, OK,” I said, starting my crawl across eight sets of feet again. Everybody were complaining as I inched out.
“Don’t come back,” the boy on the end said.
注意:
1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1
But the problem was that I had to come back to bring this girl a new lemonade. I bought a lemonade, took a deep breath, and went back. This time, I bent low, looking at every person on the end of each row. When I saw the same boy, I moved through fast to get back to that girl. Unfortunately, I stepped on a boy’s feet and banged my knee. After apologizing to him, I quickly fell into the seat next to the girl and handed her the lemonade. Everyone around us all turned to stare at me again with some complaints.
Paragraph 2
I thought about crawling out of this row and back into Emmett’s row, but I couldn’t. Maybe I would just stay there until the movie ended. Thanking me for the lemonade, the girl talked about the plots I missed. I whispered back, “Thanks.” When the lights of the cinema came on, I grabbed my jacket on the seat and hurried out. Emmett caught up with me, “Do you know that girl? “No.” I answered. “Then why do you have her jacket?” I looked down and found a bright pink jacket. “Here I go again,” I said with embarrassment, spotting the girl in the crowd.
