What’s the English word for the Chinese food jiaozi? Perhaps you would say “dumpling”. But in fact, you can just say jiaozi. It has been added to the Oxford English Dictionary.
People in English-speaking countries now understand more Chinese words and their spelling in Pinyin, according to a recent report by the China Foreign Languages Publishing Administration ( CFLPA中国外文局).
The CFLPA studied 50 media platforms in eight English-speaking countries, including the US, the UK and India. The report listed the top 100 Chinese words that people in these countries use most.
“Shaolin”, a place in China that is famous for kung fu, was at the top of the list. Other popular words include “yin yang”, “yuan”, “gugong”, “nihao”, “wushu”, “qi”, “qigong”, “renminbi” and “majiang”.
Some of the words are related not only to Chinese culture, but also to politics(政治), economy(经济)and technology. These words include “zhongguomeng”(Chinese Dream ), “ yi dai yi lu”(the Belt and Road) and “zhifubao”(Alipay).
Why have these words become popular? It may be because of the increasing interest in learning Chinese. The Confucius Institute(孔子学院),which offers Chinese lessons, has set up 1,073 classrooms in 140 countries and areas, with 2.1 million students, People’s Daily reported.
Chinese products are very popular around the world. For people in many foreign countries, products from China are part of their daily lives and may help them understand China better, China Daily noted.

A Light in the Dark
For students, study is very important. But not all of them can have a good environment to study. Recently, a 15-year-old girl called Ann Makosinski learned that a friend of hers in the Philippines couldn’t study after dark because her friend’s home didn’t have any electricity. Then Ann wanted to help her. As a result, Ann invented a flashlight that was powered by heat from the human hand.
The human body keeps producing heat. That is why people feel warm when they touch things. Ann wanted to see whether human bodies can make enough heat to power a flashlight. She thought that a special kind of tile (贴片) called Peltier tiles might work for her purposes. A Peltier tile produces energy when opposite sides of the tile get in touch with different temperatures. Ann tried to find a useful way to create different temperatures. She decided to build a hollow (中空的) flashlight and put Peltier tiles into it. She thought that if a warm human hand covered one side of the tiles while the other side of the tiles was exposed (暴露于) to cooler air, the tiles would produce energy to make light.
Ann worked hard on her idea. First, she had to balance (平衡) the flashlight project with her schoolwork. Then, she had to make difficult calculations (计算) that required much research. She said that there were days when she wanted to give up. But she also encouraged herself that she must keep going. Finally Ann’s calculations led her to the solution, and her hollow flashlight produced light. At first the light was too dark, but Ann kept experimenting and correcting her design until the flashlight shone more brightly.
Ann showed her invention in the 2013 Google Science Fair. She was one of 15 students from around the world who were invited to present their designs. Ann won the top prize in her age group and a $25,000 scholarship. She hoped that her flashlight can help people who can’t make use of electricity. She said, “I want to make sure my flashlight can be useful to those who really need it.”

You may think that only children go to school but there are special schools for guide dogs! At school, of course, guide dogs do not learn mathematics and science like you. They learn how to help blind people. The dogs live at the school for six months and they learn about twenty words- words like “sit” and “no”. These dogs wear a special coat with a big handle on it for the blind person to hold.
Dogs can also go to school to learn how to help people who cannot hear. If a person cannot hear, we say he or she is deaf.
Dogs who help deaf people must learn many different sounds. Then they must be able to show the deaf person what is making the sound. When they hear a visitor at the door, the dog learns to walk to the deaf person and then walk to the door. And if a telephone rings, they walk to the deaf man or woman and then walk to the telephone.
These dogs can also help deaf mothers. If a baby is crying in another room, the dog walks to the mother and then to the baby. These dogs wear a yellow coat to show that they are special dogs that are helping a deaf person.
There have been many times when these dogs have saved a life. You may see in a newspaper that a dog heard a fire alarm and lay down near the deaf person’s feet. That is the sign for danger. The person knows that something is wrong and can go away from the fire.
Special dogs can also help people who are disabled in various ways. For example, dogs can pull off their gloves or socks! Think how difficult your life would be if you were blind, deaf or disabled! But if you had a special dog like this to help you, your life would be much easier.

Lao She Teahouse, located in Qianmen Street, has become the most famous teahouse in Beijing. One reason is that it was named after the famous writer and artist Lao She. It was also the first modern teahouse after the reform and opening up of China, with the price of a big bowl tea only costing two cents. Lao She Teahouse was built in 1988 with a Beijing-style environment. Another reason is that it has been a window for showing Chinese culture and a bridge that connects China with the rest of the world. Since its opening, Lao She Teahouse has hosted more than 170 foreign leaders. It has received over six million tourists from home and abroad.
There are many things people can do in Lao She Teahouse. The Teahouse is a place for tourists to get to know Chinese tea culture. There are all types of Chinese tea. Jasmine tea(茉莉花茶)is the favorite of many old Beijingers because of its pure, clear taste and strong pleasant smell. People can chat over a cup of tea and taste Beijing-style food and desserts.
Besides drinking tea, people can also enjoy Peking opera, acrobatics(杂技), Sichuan Opera Face Change, magic shows, folk music, calligraphy, crosswalk, Chinese Kung Fu and other types of performances. Nepal’s government is requiring students in grades four through eight to take yoga(瑜伽) classes. The government says the classes will give students exercise. But some people don’t like the idea.
Yoga is an exercise program that practices breathing and stretches, and encourages people to pay attention to their minds and bodies. Yoga began in India thousands of years ago, and has connections to several religions(宗教).
Over time, people around the world began taking up yoga simply as an exercise to make the mind and body stronger. Yoga can reduce stress. It can also help with flexibility, balance and pain relief.
Though many countries around the world offer yoga classes, Nepal is the first country to require its students to take them. The new rule will mean that yoga joins other required classes like math, science, English and the Nepali language.
The rule has a great influence on hundreds of thousands of Nepali children in elementary schools and junior high schools. Nepal’s minister of education said, “Yoga is our ancient science. We want students to learn it and we think this is the right time.”
But some people don’t agree with the idea. They believe that because of yoga’s old connections to the Hindu religion, it's unfair to make everyone take part in it.
People speaking for Nepal’s government say the focus of the new rule is on encouraging students to be active.
The new classes are going to start this month, but it may take a while before all the students can begin yoga classes. That’s because the country doesn’t have enough yoga teachers.

With a world population of more than 7 billion, it's hard to think of one thing every single person has in common. But there is one: Everyone lives on planet Earth!
Every year on April 22nd, people around the world celebrate Earth Day. But this isn't the sort of holiday that involves eating special food or traveling to visit relatives. Instead, environmental activists celebrate by meeting with local officials to discuss environmental protection. Ordinary people usually plant trees, pick up litter or promote environmental conservation.
The Earth Day Network, an organization with the goal of building the world's largest environmental movement, helps to organize activities around the world each day. For 2018, their theme is End Plastic Pollution. This theme is in accordance (按照) with their goal of motivating people and governments to take action to reduce plastic waste.
Earth Day provides a reminder for us to care for our environment. We can celebrate Earth Day every day! We can plant a tree, reduce our carbon footprint, use less plastic, use less water and electricity or even eat less meat. We can all work together to make our world a little greener.

Do you know a famous saying, “Life is like a box of chocolates: you never know what you will get.” The surprise is part of the fun. Now blind boxes are quite popular. Merchants(商家)fill the box with random(随机的) toys which usually come from movies, comics and cartoons. Many people are eager to buy them to find out what will be inside.
The earliest blind boxes originated in Japan, it was a New Year’s tradition. At that time, they called it “a lucky bag”. Blind boxes were introduced to China in 2014. According to a 2019 T-mall(天猫)report, the mini-series of Labubu blind box, designed by Hong Kong-born Kasing Lung, was sold 55,000 in just 9 seconds during the Singles Day shopping event. Most customers for blind boxes are young people aged 18 to 35.
According to The Paper, blind box toys are popular in part because of their cute appearances. The cute miniature-sized cartoon figurines are suitable to place almost anywhere. What’s more, even if blind box toys are not their top choice for decorations, the mystery and uncertainty of the process also attracts people. It’s the main reason why people buy blind boxes one after another.
“Fear of the unknown is always a part of the box-opening process,” said Miss Cao, 24, who lives and works in Shenyang. Speaking to Sina News, she said: “Until you open all the boxes, you cannot know what it is inside.”
Opening a blind box is a pleasant little surprise for our daily lives, something small but fun to wait for each day, week or month. When people open this simple little box, they may be disappointed, but the uncertainty is part of the fun. People will open more blind boxes and hope for a better outcome. In fact, although the magical mystery boxes are full of fun, we should come to a rational(理智的) decision.

Screen-Free Days
I remember the first time I suggested screen-free days in our school to some of our student leaders. Jokingly, I said to the group, “What do you think if we go a week without using our laptops or smartphones?”
They laughed, and one of them said, “No way, Mr. White. They would be too much.” I could feel their worry, and told them that I was only considering single screen-free days. Even that idea left them feeling upset.
According to a survey we did, most students in our school spend about six hours a day on screens. Many of my students start their day by checking their smartphones. I often see them looking at their phones when getting off the bus or at parents’ drop-off, they can’t use their own “screens” at school. They usually work on computers at school for at least two hours during the day.
It’s clear that our students spend a lot of time on screens. We do see the benefits of technology. However, we teachers also want to make sure that students have balanced learning and social experiences away from their screens. That’s why we have come up with the idea of screen-free days.
During the course of the year, we have built in several screen-free days that require us to make different plans for our students about how they will communicate with one another and the world around them without “screens”. For some teachers, this means bringing back a valuable lesson plan that has been put off for some time because it is “out of date”. Others have designed something completely new.
Fun activities, for example, card games and room escape(密室逃脱) games, are organized at school. In these activities, students socialize without smartphones and have face-to-face communication without checking on “likes” they’ve got online. These fun activities also make it possible for the whole grade to enjoy the company of their friends with no smartphones.
After our first screen-free day, students mentioned that they were surprised they enjoyed it. Finding ways to help our students connect with one another is important.
While technology is already part of our world, it shouldn’t play such an important role in a learner’s life.

Astronauts go on spacewalks for many reasons. Spacewalks let astronauts work outside their spacecraft (飞行器) while still in space. Astronauts can do science experiments on a spacewalk. Spacewalks also let astronauts test new equipment (设备). They can repair spacecraft in space instead of bringing them back to the Earth to fix.
When astronauts go on spacewalks, they wear spacesuits with pure oxygen (纯氧) inside to keep themselves safe. Once in their suits, astronauts breathe oxygen for a few hours. Breathing only oxygen can help clear out all the nitrogen (氮气) in an astronaut’s body. If they didn’t clear out the nitrogen, the astronauts might get gas bubbles (气泡) in their body and the bubbles will do them harm. These gas bubbles can cause pain in astronauts’ shoulders and knees. This pain is called getting “the bends” because it has influences on the places where the body bends.
Astronauts are now ready to get out of their spacecraft. They leave the spacecraft through a special door called an airlock. The use of the airlock is to stop air getting out. The airlock has two doors. When astronauts get ready to go on a spacewalk, they go through the first door and lock it tight behind them. They can then open the second door without any air getting out of the spacecraft. After a spacewalk, astronauts go back inside through the airlock.
How do astronauts stay safe during spacewalks? They use safety ropes to keep themselves from floating away (飘离) into space. When on a spacewalk, one end of the safety rope is hooked (钩住) to the space walker while the other end is connected to the spacecraft. Astronauts also use ropes to keep tools from floating away. They tie their tools to their spacesuits.
Another way astronauts stay safe during spacewalks is by wearing a SAFER. If an astronaut were to float away, SAFER would help him or her fly back to the spacecraft. Astronauts control SAFER with a small joystick (控制杆), like on a video game.
