When I was told to play for a drama competition, I became nervous. I had never done anything like this before. But after reading Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, I was excited about what was to come. The story was great and sentences were so funny. I wanted to give it a go.
I was playing Sir Toby Belch, a very funny old knight (骑士). I had to remember a lot of sentences and very funny old words. I worked hard in order to act well, like a real knight from the old days. But the most difficult job was to be funny in all my acting. This is quite different from the way I am in real life.
“OK. It’s time to be a different me now!” I said to myself. At first, I couldn’t do anything naturally. I don’t know what to do when acting in this silly way. But I always told myself that I was Sir Toby now and I should forget who I really was. Even when I was in the bath, I was thinking about Sir Toby’s words and actions and trying to do everything like Sir Toby did.
The competition day finally came. When it was my turn to perform, I took a deep breath and began my part. I tried hard to make my words clear enough to be understood and my actions funny enough to make everybody laugh. When the results were finally read out, I immediately knew we had won first prize. I made it.
From this experience, I’ve come to know that I can be a different person. It doesn’t mean I’ve changed my personality, but I can do something I had never imagined possible.

Once in a physics class, the teacher asked students, “Why do we have brakes in our car?” A student got up and replied, “Sir, to stop the car.” Another student replied, “To reduce and control the speed of the car.” Another said, “To avoid crashes. “ Soon, all the students began to give similar answers. So, the teacher decided to answer the question himself. He said, “I appreciate all of your answers, although I look at it this way—the brakes in our car enable us to make it run faster.”
Listening to this, there was a deep silence in the class because no one had imagined this answer. The teacher continued, “For a moment, let’s suppose our car has no brakes, then how fast are we ready to drive our car? It is the brakes in our car that gives us courage to drive our car faster and reach our destination.” All the students got confused. They never thought this way about brakes in a car.
The teacher smiled and continued, “Similarly, there are many such Brakes in our life, which stop us or restrict(限制)our moment. Our parents, teachers, friends ask us about direction we want to follow, our progress or decisions in life. We tend to view their questions or difficult situations as Brakes that slow us down. But what if we see them as our supporter that enables us to take risks while ensuring that we protect ourselves? From time to time, we have to stop or even step back, so that we can take a giant step. It is because of such questions or situations that we are able to reach where we are today. Without these Brakes, we could slip, lose direction or be victim of unfortunate accidents. Therefore, we need to understand that Brakes in our life are not meant to push us back but to help us move forward faster than before, so that we can reach our destination quickly and safely. Should we be thankful for Brakes in life or just see them as hindrance(障碍物)to our work?”
4.Why do the students think there are brakes in a car?
A.To prevent accidents. B.To control speed. C.To stop driving. D.All of the above.
5.What does the teacher compare to Brakes in our life?
A.Parents, teachers and friends B.Questions and difficulties
C.Risks and accidents D.Directions or decisions
6.What does the teacher mainly want to tell the students?
A.Brakes are often misused and misunderstood.
B.Brakes in cars are necessary for increasing speed.
C.Brakes can be viewed as supporters and safety guards.
D.Brakes in life push us back and force us to step back.

    mirror
What do you see when you look in the mirror? Do you often see at least one part of your body image that you don’t like? Do you always feel unsatisfied with your body shape and take some steps to change it? If so, you may have body image issues (形体问题).
Teen body image issues can result from different factors. The perfect body types are always in movies, magazines and on social media (媒体). The media uses some ways to change the appearance of models and actors so that they look perfect. As teenagers see these images, they may begin to feel as if any other body type is not good enough. Another reason for a teenager’s body image issue is that they are often laughed at by people around. They may say unkind words about a teenager’s shape or weight. This may lead to an overcare about their body imperfection. Home environment may also play a role in teen’s body image issues. Teens with a home environment that is less positive (积极的) may be more likely to develop issues with body image.
So is there anything to do if you are troubled by image issues? First, try to become a clever viewer of the media. Just let those messages that make you feel bad about yourself go. Simply don’t follow the reports that may lead to body image issues. Then, focus on self-care. Try to join a summer book club or check out a local field trip that explores the great outdoors. Whether you are interested in reading, or are preparing for an outdoor activity ahead-the more time that is made to care for your own body, the better. Expressing thanks to your body can be also helpful. Whenever you feel negative about your body, it’s a good idea to focus on all that your body can do. Take time to say thanks to your body for everything it can successfully do each day, instead of how it looks. It’s much easier to help you view the body in a positive way. And it’s also a simple and quick way to enjoy all the good things in life.
7.Why does the writer ask questions in Paragraph 1?
A.To make a survey. B.To lead in the topic.
C.To show some examples. D.To give background information.
8.What might be the reason for the teens’ body image issues?
A.Parents push teens to learn from their friends.
B.Teens spend too much time looking in the mirror.
C.People around may laugh at teens’ body imperfection.
D.The media misleads teens to overcare their body health.
9.What is the main idea of Paragraph 3?
    A.Influence of negative body image.
    B.Activities about self-development.
C.Advice on keeping your body healthy.
D.Ways to build up body image positively.

It is never too late to develop great study habits. If you’re starting a new school year, or you just want to improve your grades and school performance, proper study habits will help you. You’ll find that it does not take that long to form study habits and you may study differently from your friends, but your study habits are not wrong!
Kelly and Maria are best friends with a lot of identical interests. They love doing things together, such as going to movies and concerts, shopping, or just sitting at a small cafe. Since they take a lot of the same school subjects, they would love to study together, but they find this impossible. Their working styles are so completely different that they can’t be in the same room while they are studying!
Kelly would like to study in a clean, open space, while Maria works best with books, papers and other things around her. Kelly prefers to study in a totally silent room, but Maria loves to play music or even have the TV on. Kelly can sit for hours without moving, and often gets all her homework done in one sitting. Maria, however, is always getting up, and says that she thinks best when she’s on the move.
You might be asking yourself: which way of studying gets better results? Many people believe that a silent, tidy setting is the way to go, but that doesn’t necessarily seem true. Some research has even shown that outside noise and untidiness help some people focus their attention, because it makes them form a “wall” in their mind around what they are doing and improves their focus.
So, if you’re a student who chooses to study while sitting at a table in a busy shopping center, don’t worry about it. If you work in total silence, that’s OK, too. Judging from Kelly’s and Maria’s study habits, the best way to study is the way that works for you. In their very different ways, both of them do well in school, and both finish their work within the required time as well.
10.What do we know from Kelly’s and Maria’s study habits?
A.The students who like to study in silence can study well. B.Different students have different habits in their studies.
C.We can form good study habits by finishing homework. D.People with different study habits can’t become friends.
11.The word “identical” in Paragraph 2 probably means ________.
    A.secret B.special C.same D.simple
12.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.Ways to Improve Your Study Habits. B.Are You Studying the “Right” Way?
C.Is It Good to Study with Your Friends? D.Advice to Help You Make More Friends.
13.According to the passage, the writer believes that ________.
A.we can have a wall to avoid the outside noise to improve the focus B.successful students should practice a lot to improve their study skills
C.proper study habits can help students make progress in their studies D.study together can help both of the friends get better grades in school

    A Meaningful Experience
In 2000, when I was about seven years old, all my family were coming back from a T-ball game. Unlike every other weekend, a surprise was waiting for us in our driveway—two adult geese and a small goose. Obviously startled by our return, the adults flew away in fear, with their baby left behind. Hours passed before night eventually fell. It was apparent that the gosling needed protection, warmth and food to make it to the morning. We brought the gosling to our backyard. We slept with one eye open till morning came. And then another morning. And still another. Each morning, we would try to drive the goose away to his parents, who kept coming back to our yard. Realizing the young goose had clearly decided we were his family by then, we gave him a name, calling the little guy Peeper.
A year passed and we settled into a routine. Gradually the little creature had grown into a big bird with two powerful wings. One day, when dad threw Peeper into the air, he just flew away and didn’t come back. With night falling, all of us became increasingly worried. We looked for him for a long time but he never appeared again. It took a long time before we accepted the fact that he was missing. We could only pray he found his parents and went off on his natural way.
It came as a total surprise to me when, in 2019, an adult goose made his way back to my family home. He did all of the same things Peeper used to do. Much to my surprise, he even responded to the name Peeper. It became clear to me that my old best friend had returned to our home many years later.
This experience has been as meaningful to me as anything in my life. Looking beyond our reach high in the sky, birds have feelings like human beings, so do many other living things. We human beings should learn to keep good relationship with them. We need each other’s care and protection for a better world.
14.What did the writer and his family bring to their backyard?
    A.Warmth and Food. B.A gosling. C.Adult geese. D.The protection.
15.What surprised the writer in 2019?
A.Peeper returned to their home many years later. B.Peeper flew away in fear, with his parents left behind.
C.Peeper had clearly decided we were his family members. D.Peeper found his parents and went off on his natural way.
16.Why has the experience been meaningful to the writer?
A.Because he tried to look for the gosling for a long time. B.Because the clever gosling made him surprised and happy.
C.Because he learned human should get along well with animals. D.Because he knew gosling needed protection, warmth and food.

Many people take running as a way to keep fit. They like to run in hot weather and enjoy the feeling of being wet through with sweat ( 汗 ) while running. Cold weather during winter months, with low temperatures and freezing cold winds, may keep many people from running in the open air.
However, a new study shows that the drop in temperature is a good reason to run. In fact, running in cold weather helps improve one’s performance. Many runners might find it easier to run in winter than in hot weather. The body needs less water on a cold day than in warm weather. In addition, lower temperatures reduce stress on the body. When you run in cold weather, your heart rate is lower.
John Brewer is a professor of applied sports science at St. Mary’s University in London. For this study, he and other researchers put a group of people into a room where summer and winter weather conditions are recreated. The test subjects were asked to run 10,000 meters under both conditions and their biological measurements were recorded and studied.
From the study, every movement runners make produces heat. The heat can be really damaging unless the body can lose it. One way in which people lose heat is by sweating. The body loses heat through sweat. The body also loses it by transporting the blood to the surface of the skin and it puts more stress on the heart, especially in hot conditions because it’s much harder to lose heat when the outside environment is warm. As the result shows, running in hot temperatures results in 6 percent higher heart rates.
When running in cold conditions, the body does not have to work hard to move blood to the skin surface. Therefore, it requires less energy. The most important thing for people who run in cold conditions is to wear the right clothing. Keep as dry as possible when exercising in low temperatures. Wear warm and light clothing to keep sweat away from your skin. So don’t let winter weather keep you indoors. Simply get ready for the low temperatures and start running.
17.Why did John Brewer make a group of people run in a room?
A.Because the weather conditions could be recreated for four seasons. B.Because the researchers could teach the people there to study science.
C.Because the professor could study science with the group of people. D.Because the test subjects’ biological measurements could be recorded.
18.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Running in cold weather doesn’t need a lot of energy. B.Running in cold weather needs heavy clothing to keep warm.
C.Running in hot weather causes hearts beat slower than in cold. D.Running in hot weather produces more heat than other movements.
19.What is the main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To study why the drop in temperature is good to run. B.To compare benefits of running in winter and summer.
C.To encourage people to keep running outdoors in winter. D.To show us how to keep healthy while running in winter.

Self-esteem is the way we feel about ourselves. It has a great influence on how we make decisions and socialize. Normally, people with low self-esteem easily think low about themselves, so it is very important to understand what causes low self-esteem and how we can get over it.
Because of trust, we sometimes accept the control from other people who tell us what to do. However, we need to understand it may have serious effects, especially when that person has negative behaviors, like being cruel (残忍的), or overly criticizing others. Remember that you cannot change a person quickly, but you must change how you react to their words and behaviors towards you. Always remember that only you have control of your reaction.
Do not just focus on your past unwise choices or feel guilty (内疚的) about them. Everyone makes mistakes. But if you think more, every mistake you made in the past has caused something positive. Making mistakes will open many doors for improvement. If you’re feeling especially guilty about a decision you made, write it down and write beside it every possible positive result that happened to you. This will help you cherish those decisions rather than feel upset about them.
Besides, it is not wrong to dream a big thing. However, there will be some harmful effects on your self-esteem if it is your only goal and you fail to achieve it. Most of the time we set unrealistic goals and not being able to achieve them makes us think that we are not good enough. Therefore, it is a good idea to set a huge goal but remember to set up small milestones that you can achieve along the way.
Last but not least, comparing yourself to other people is so easy to become a bad habit. We think that the picture we see on social media is their whole story, not realizing that it is just their best look. Keep in mind that what you see is not always what it seems. Moreover remember that they worked hard to achieve what you see from them, then learn from them to be a better you.
Hopefully, these tips help you develop your self-esteem. You will not be able to live a joyful life if you let your low self-esteem take over.
23.What should we do if others always tell us what to do?
    A.Control our own reaction.
    B.Trust and take their advice.
    C.Be cruel and criticize them.
    D.Try to change them quickly.
24.The word “cherish” in Paragraph 4 probably means “________”.
    A.make B.value C.regret D.forget
25.What can we learn from the passage?
A.We’d better try our best to make fewer mistakes.
B.Small goals will lower our self-esteem and cause failure.
C.We shouldn’t believe in the stories on social media blindly.
D.The problem of low self-esteem is more serious than before.
26.The writer wrote this passage to _______.
A.introduce some methods to study self-esteem
B.guide readers to solve the low self-esteem problem
C.lead people to make right decisions by themselves
D.encourage people to face failures bravely in real life

Derek didn’t leave the band room as usual after class. As he put his saxophone carefully back, he felt a hand on his shoulder. Mr. Boxwell stood behind him and asked,“Are you excited about Jazz Band (爵士乐队) Camp next week?” Derek was the only student at James Madison Middle School accepted into the best camp. He would be playing in a jazz band with the most talented students in the state.
“Actually, Mr. Boxwell,” Derek said quietly, “I’m really nervous. What if I don’t play well?”
Mr.Boxwell smiled at Derek and said lightly, “You’re the best middle school saxophone player I’ve had the pleasure of teaching. You will blow away the people at camp with your talent. Is there anything else troubling you”
Derek lowered his head. It was easy to admit (承认) that he might not be the best saxophone player at camp, but it was really hard for him to face the fact that he was probably the only 12-year-old boy that had never been to an overnight summer camp. What if he didn’t make any friends? What would the food be like?
Mr. Boxwell looked down into Derek’s eyes.“My first summer camp experience was a music camp when I was your age. For some reason,I had the ideas in my head that I wasn’t going to make any friends and that I was going to miss my mom’s cooking.” He laughed again.“Well, I did miss my mom’s cooking, but I was surprised by how quickly I made friends with the other kids from the band and the orchestra (管弦乐队) kids too.”
Just then, the door opened and in walked Mr.Graham, the orchestra teacher. In fact , Mr. Graham said,“That’s where we met 25 years ago! We’ve been best friends ever since!”
27.What did Mr. Boxwell think of Derek according to the passage?
    A.Brave. B.Talented. C.Patient. D.Friendly.
28.Why was Derek afraid to take part in the camp?
A.Because he did not have enough pocket money.
B.Because he did not have proper clothes and shoes.
C.Because he missed mom’s cooking while going out.
D.Because he had never spent a night in a summer camp.
29.How did Mr. Boxwell help Derek?
A.By preparing a tasty meal for Derek himself.
B.By teaching him how to protect himself outside.
C.By sharing his own camp experience with Derek.
D.By inviting other boys to go to the camp with Derek.

One recent survey in Britain showed that 50% of parents didn’t pay their children pocket money. And 76% of the parents who didn’t pay pocket money said that their children complained about it. They really wondered whether to give pocket money or not and how to give it wisely if necessary.
As a reporter, I think pocket money is a good way for children to understand the value of money and to get the good habit of making use of money early.
I would very strongly advise that even from a very young age when we’re giving children money for treats, we still say that some should be put aside for things like buying presents at Christmas, or saving up for things they really want. As soon as we start handing over money we should be handing over responsibility.
In fact, there are also some parents who want to use money to have more control over their children. What that probably leads to is arguments between parents and children. Besides, children aren’t learning to make decisions. Therefore, it’s really helpful for children to learn that they need to manage money—they need to decide what to spend it on, whether they should save it, and so on.
One of the messages we should give our children is that things don’t come easily. They do have to practice, and they will get things wrong. The world doesn’t come to an end if they make a wrong decision, and this is why we shouldn’t help them out if they spend their money on the wrong thing.
It’s very hard, but we’re not helping our children grow into a happy person if we teach them that all they have to do is to complain and then they’ll get what they want.
Overall, it’s important for children to understand that their parents have a budget (预算), with money coming in and money going out and it’s only what’s left—if anything that’s affordable for what the family wants, rather than needs.
Think about what we’re saying by giving our children money, what we want them to do with it and how we should use it as a learning experience rather than just for treats? In this way, they will realize they can’t have everything they want and money has to be earned. Moreover, they need to learn to manage for the future.
30.What did the survey in Britain show us?
A.The ways to give pocket money to children.
B.The importance of giving money to children.
C.The harm of giving pocket money to children.
D.The situation of giving children pocket money.
31.The writer probably agrees that ______.
A.children should know that pocket money is for treats
B.children need to know how they spend or save money
C.parents control over their children well by controlling their money
D.parents should help children when they spend money on a wrong thing
32.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.Is pocket money a good treat for children?
B.Should children earn their own pocket money?
C.Can managing money improve children’s school work?
D.Does pocket money build up children’s responsibility?
