阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳答案。

This holiday weekend will be about more than Thanksgiving treats and extra days off from school for eighth-grader Shreya Nair. Shreya will also spend some of her time conducting an interview that will end up in the Library of Congress.
Shreya, 13, is participating in a StoryCorps initiative called The Great Thanksgiving Listen. The project encourages students to interview family members and friends about their lives in an effort to keep the stories and voices of an older generation (一代人).
“It would be interesting to see her view on life and how it’s different from mine based on the circumstances she grew up in,” Shreya said about her interview.
StoryCorps’ aim is to use audio to preserve the stories of people of all ages and backgrounds. Students will be able to record their interviews using a new app and upload them to the StoryCorps Archive at the Library of Congress.
Shreya’s English teacher decided to get involved in spreading the word about the project, by assigning the interview as homework. Alison Matthews teaches Shreya at McCall Middle School in Winchester, Massachusetts. She incorporated (纳入) the StoryCorps interview assignment into a unit on the book, The Giver. Matthews describes the novel as a “story about this community where there’s one man — the giver — who holds all the memories of the community.”
“The StoryCorps project fit in so perfectly. The Library of Congress is the keeper of our memories. So I asked kids to think about the importance of memory in our society,” Matthews said.
Shreya said that her classmates like the assignment. “It’s an interview that will help us not only understand the book we’re reading right now, but help us later in life,” Shreya said. “One of the things I like about the project is that you get to hear so many other people’s voices,” she added. “Sometimes in this world it feels like our opinion is the only one, but when you sit down and listen, it’s amazing what it can bring.”
1.Who might Shreya meet this holiday weekend?

The victims were carried in one by one, their paws and fur burned, suffering from lack of water and fear. Their caretakers bandaged their wounds and laid them in baskets with the only thing that was familiar -- the leaves of a eucalyptus (桉树) tree.
As catastrophic fires have burned more than 2 million acres in Australia, dozens of koalas have been rescued from smoky and burning trees and ashen ground. "They are terrified," said Cheyne Flanagan, clinical director of the Koala Hospital in Port Macquarie, the only facility of its kind in the world.
Koalas, unlike kangaroos, birds or snakes, do not flee from fires but instead climb trees to the top, where they can curd themselves into a ball for protection and wait for the danger to pass. But during high-intensity fires, such as those that have burned in recent weeks, the animals, conservationists said, are far less likely to survive. Even if the fire itself does not reach the tree top, the animals may overheat and fall to the ground, where they can be burned to death.
The suffering of the koala -- a national symbol of Australia -- has raised questions among conservationists and scientists about what it will take to preserve biodiversity in a country increasingly prone to intense fire, extreme heat and water shortage. While koalas have evolved to exist alongside wildfires, the animals are facing new threats not just from climate change but also from human development, which has affected local populations, impairing their ability to survive fires.
"We have these unique animals not found anywhere else on this planet, and we're killing them," Flanagan said. "This is a big wake-up call."
4.The description of the koalas in Para. 1 is to show .
A.koalas are quite lovely
B.the forests in Australia are severely burnt
C.global warming is becoming more and more serious
D.forest burning has put koalas into great danger

A.They escape from fires as soon as possible.
B.They climb to the top of trees for safety.
C.They curl themselves into a ball on the ground.
D.They wait where they're for the danger to pass.
6.According to the article, which of the following factors may NOT affect the preservation of biodiversity in Australia?
A.Global warming. B.Water shortage.
C.Intense fire. D.Extreme heat.
7.From Flanagan's words, we can learn .
A.koalas are not unique animals on the earth
B.people are killing koalas cruelly on purpose
C.measures should be taken to save koalas
D.people should wake up to preserve the earth

You wouldn't think of driving your car to work in the morning with an empty tank of gas, yet thousands of parents send their children off to school without any breakfast.
"After an overnight fast of eight to twelve hours, the brain needs fuel, "said Joan Carter, manager for the Children's Nutrition Research Center in Houston.
The body breaks down food to produce this fuel in the form of glucose(葡萄糖). Because glucose levels are associated with memory function, children can have difficulty focusing when they skip breakfast. Research shows that breakfast eaters tend to pay more attention to their teacher in class than those who rarely eat breakfast.
They tend to be more creative and better performers in school. They show more energy by late morning, have more strength and endurance, concentrate better, and are better at problem-solving. Children who are hungry can be slow or nervous during classroom activities or can appear disinterested when they have a difficult task to perform.
Researchers have also discovered that students who eat breakfast regularly tend to have better health overall.
They take in more vitamins and minerals, consume less fat and cholesterol(胆固醇), and may even have less chance of becoming overweight than breakfast-skippers. Without breakfast, it's difficult for children to get the nutrients they need throughout the day. Research shows that nutrients missed at breakfast aren't made up for at other meals.
"Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and there's no excuse for not eating breakfast," Dr. Carter said. A piece of bread and a glass of milk take little time to prepare. If you are trying to lose weight, skipping breakfast is also a big mistake. You will be tired and hungry by mid-morning. Then you'll want to eat a snack that isn't healthy.
Breakfast should provide at least 1/4 to 1/3 of a child's daily needs for vitamins, minerals and calories. A nutritious breakfast also provides the sugar, protein and fat they need because they are continuously growing and changing. Parents should set a good example for children. "You can't run out the door without eating breakfast, yet insist that your kids sit down and eat something," Dr. Carter said.
8.What can be inferred from the passage?
A.The brain cannot work properly at school without breakfast.
B.Breakfast-skippers are able to focus better because of hunger.
C.Hunger makes it difficult for the body to break down the food.
D.Breakfast eaters have a tendency to ignore their teachers in class.
9.What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A.The importance of body shaping.
B.The relationship between breakfast and health.
C.The importance of getting enough nutrients for children.
D.The relationship between breakfast and school performance.
10.Why is it wrong for the dieters to skip breakfast?
A.It leaves them short of energy to exercise all day.
B.It results in a lack of necessary nutrients they need.
C.It makes them have difficulty in performing well.
D.It contributes to more snack-consuming.
11.How should parents teach children to have breakfast?
A.By eating breakfast regularly.
B.By preparing generous breakfast.
C.By running out without breakfast.
D.By giving them extra money for breakfast.
D
It is believed that human story begins in Africa and ends about 200,000 years later with their seven billion descendants (后代) spread across the Earth, living in peace or at war, their faces Jit by campfires and computer screens.
In between is an exciting tale of survival, movement, isolation, and conquest, most of it occurring before recorded history. Who were those first modem people in Africa? What routes did they take when they left their home continent 60,000 years ago to expand into Europe and Asia? When and how did humans reach the Americas? For decades, the only proof was found in a small number of scattered bones and artifacts (文物) that our ancestors left behind on their journeys. In the past 20 years, however, DNA technologies have allowed scientists to find a record of ancient human migrations in the DNA of living people.
“Every drop of human blood contains a history book written in the language of our genes,” says population geneticist Spencer Wells. The human genetic code, or genome (基因组), is 99.9 percent identical throughout the world. But while the bulk of our DNA is the same, what’s left is responsible for our individual differences — in eye color or disease risk, for example. On very rare occasions, a small change, called a mutation, can occur, which is then passed down to all of that person’s descendants. Generations later, finding that same mutation in two peopled DNA indicates that they share the same ancestor. By comparing mutations in many different populations, scientists can trace their ancestral connections.
These ancient mutations are easiest to track in two places: in DNA that is passed from mother to child (called mitochondrial DNA, or mtDNA for short), and in DNA that travels from father to son (known as the Y chromosome, the part of DNA that determines a child will be a boy). By comparing the mtDNA and Y chromosomes (染色体) of people from various populations, geneticists can get a rough idea of where and when those groups separated in the great migrations around the planet.
12.Which one from the following can best summarize this passage?
A.Exploring human history B.Finding DNA differences
C.Making a biology experiment D.Discovering ancestry in DNA
13.What can we infer from the quote of Spencer Wells in Paragraph 3?
A.Every drop of blood contains enough DNA information to fill many history books.
B.A drop of blood contains genetic information that can tell a person’s ancestral history.
C.Although people speak different languages, all human blood contains the same language.
D.The organization of information in a history book is similar to the that of DNA within a gene.
14.What does the underlined word “bulk” in Paragraph 3 most probably refer to?
A.the large size B.the main part
C.the number D.the weight or shape
15.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the reading?
A.Human DNA remains the same as what is passed down from their ancestors.
B.Comparing mtDNA and Y chromosomes can help identify human migrations.
C.The earliest people are said to originate from Africa and spread across the world.
D.Scientists have found ways to determine whether people share the same ancestor.

___19___ Good writing skills as well as correct grammar and spelling do matter. Send polite well-written e-mail messages to others. If you’re uncertain about how to spell a word or which phrase to use, look it up. There are lots of helpful books and websites.
It’s okay to express your opinions online in forums like chat rooms or message boards for example “MSN” or “QQ” but don’t start arguments with people. ___20___ But they are often unfair to other members of the group. Express your ideas but remember that fighting on or offline is just not right.

As a language arts teacher, I think it my duty to teach my kids how to use our tools of words well. Use your tool right—this is what I always tell them. But I never expected to learn that lesson from them.
I clearly remembered it was my 40th birthday. On that day, my sixth-grade students were seated in a large circle, each holding a different tool in their hand—a hammer, a flashlight, a screwdriver, etc. The students discussed how words are like tools—they have the ability to build or to destroy, and they discovered how the right tool used at the right time for the right job can bring about great results. They freely shared personal stories of how they had experienced someone’s words used as a tool, to wound or to heal.
I watched and listened with a sense of satisfaction—the students were engaged, attentive, and enjoying the lesson. They got it! It was one of those times when I sat back and enjoyed the magic of being a teacher—to have the opportunity to watch young people discover a greater truth about life about each other, and about themselves. There was no better gift than that.
As we neared the end of that school day, one of my students, Laura, had an unexpected outburst of defiance(违抗) in class. Busy scribbling (涂画) in her exercise book, she refused to work with her group. I was aware from reading Laura's file that she had struggled with defiant behavior in previous years, but we had developed a good relationship and she was always a respectful, thoughtful, and positive contributor to our class. Her behavior caught me off guard. “I'm disappointed in you!" With a sharp tone, I asked her to excuse herself and told her I would visit with her in our next-door meeting room after school. She refused to leave and sat silently, staring at me angrily from the back of the room.

Be a Student With Dreams and Responsibilities
With the rapid development of China, we, youngsters, should stick to our dreams and shoulder our responsibilities.
As for me, I always dream to better this world. I try to be good at western and eastern cultures, which allows me to spread Chinese cultures. Additionally, I will do my part to make our country more powerful and beautiful.
I sincerely appeal to every student to spare no effort to realize the Chinese Dream. Only when we young generations strive will our nation thrive.
47.One possible version:
“This was NOT optional,” I firmly told her, sounding unpleasantly bitter. She marched from the back to the front and slammed the door as she left for the room next door. After the class was dismissed, I hurried to the meeting room. In an uncharacteristic gesture of frustration, I slammed the meeting room door behind me. “Do you know how disturbing your defiance was to the whole class?” I reprimanded as I stood over her. With a bit of complacency, I paused for her to respond.
But the meeting room rang with her response “You’re using your tool against me!” It thundered in my ears. A girl was wounded by my tool of words. My mind raced for solutions. “Sorry, Laura. I haven’t used my tool right.” I softly said, gently putting my hand on her shoulder to reassure her of my sincerity. Her defiance slowly melted away and she handed me what she busied herself with—a birthday card. This precious gift served as a constant reminder of learning to use my tool right.
