Show the six pictures in Part A in Welcome to the unit and discuss: What can we do for these people? Then ask some students to share their ideas.

1. Show some pictures about the Special Olympic World Games and teach some new words about it.

(1) A person with physical (身体) disabilities.

A person with intellectual (智力) disabilities.

But they all do a good job in their fields.

1. Liu Ming did not know what to expect when he volunteered for the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai, back in October 2007.

(1) expect 及物动词，意为“期待，指望，预料”。

(2) volunteer 动词，意为“志愿做，义务做”。

volunteer for (doing)...  志愿(做)……；主动(做)……

volunteer to do sth 自愿/义务/主动要求做某事

He volunteered for the army in 1939. 他在1939年自愿参军。

That girl volunteered for teaching dance in the makeshift hospital.

那个女孩自愿在临时医院教舞蹈。

2. The Special Olympics World Games give children and adults with intellectual disabilities a chance to show their skills to the world.

特奥会给有智力缺陷的孩子和成人一个向全世界展示能力的机会。

(1)句中的with intellectual disabilities 为后置定语，修饰children and adults，介词短语作定语一般要后置。

  (2) give sb a chance to do sth 给某人一个做某事的机会

3. They include many events similar to those in the Olympics, such as basketball, football and swimming. 它们（特奥会）包括很多与奥运会类似的项目，如篮球、足球和游泳。

similar 形容词，意为“相似的，类似的”。

be similar to 意为“与……相似/相仿”。

be similar in 表示“在某方面相似/相仿”。

His teaching style is similar to that of most teachers.

他的教学风格和多数教师相似。

The two houses are similar in shape. 这两个房子在形状上相似。

4. Over 40,000 people gave up their spare time for the 2007 Special Olympics World Games.为了2007年特奥会，4万多人放弃了他们的空闲时间。

give up 意为“放弃”，可以单独使用。

give up doing sth意为“放弃做某事”。

give up sth意为“放弃某事”。注意：give up是“动词+副词”结构的短语，当宾语是人称代词时，需将其放在give与up中间。

Don’t give up! 不要放弃！

Please give up smoking because it’s bad for your health.

请戒烟，因为它对你的健康有害。

The mother gave up her job to look after her child.

6. He was born with intellectual disabilities. 他生下来就有智力缺陷。

  be born with 意为“生来具有……”。

He was born with a weak heart. 他生来心脏衰弱。      

7. To Li Hai, the most important thing is not to win a gold or a silver, but to take part. 对李海来说, 最重要的东西不是赢得一块金牌或银牌，而是参与。

  not...but... 意为“不是……而是……”，表示转折。

  He is not an athlete but a volunteer. 他不是运动员而是志愿者。

not...but...连接主语时，谓语动词的单复数取决于but后面的主语(就近原则）。

Not he but I am interested in swimming. 不是他而是我对游泳感兴趣。

【拓展】not only...but (also) 意为“不但…… 而且……”, 表示递进（就近原则）。

Not only he but (also) I am interested in swimming.

不仅他，我也对游泳感兴趣。

8. Li Hai tried his best and finished fourth. 李海尽最大努力并取得了第四名。

  当序数词表示名次时，其前的定冠词通常可以省略。

  Who came first? 谁获得了第一名？

9. You get to help them achieve their dreams... 你有机会帮助他们实现梦想……

(1) get to do sth意为“有机会做某事”。   

I got to know the doctor in that meeting.

我在那次会议上有机会认识了这位医生。

(2) achieve one’s dream = realize one’s dream, 意为“实现某人的梦想”。

If you study hard, you’ll achieve your dream.

如果你努力学习，你将实现你的梦想。

We use“It is + adjective + to-infinitive”to express what we think about something. 即在“做某事是……的”句型中，形容词表示不定式所具备的特征或客观情况。如cheap, dangerous, difficult, easy等。

It is good to help the blind people cross the road. 帮助盲人过马路是好的。

It is important to support the Special Olympics World Games.

支持特奥会是很重要的。

(2) It was very brave of him to join the competition.

他参加竞赛真的很勇敢。

We use“It is + adjective +of sb.+ to-infinitive”to express what we think about something. 即在“某人做某事真是……的”该句型中形容词描述的是人的特征、品质。如clever, kind, generous, polite等。

It is friendly of you to come to see me. 你能来看我，真是够朋友。

It is kind of Liu Ming to volunteer for the Special Olympics World Games.
