Tonight and every night, homeless young people will be on our streets, too afraid to sleep. Their fears feel very real, as we know from our research that 3 in 10 homeless young people have been physically affected. And as we enter the cold, dark depths of winter, it’s only getting more dangerous. Gemma was just 17 when she was forced to sleep on the street: “I was really frightened. I felt very weak being all on my own.”
Fortunately, Gemma found safety at Centrepoint. But right now, thousands more young people are still in danger --- alone and frightened on our streets. By becoming a Room Sponsor(赞助者)for just 40 pennies a day, you could help give another young person a safe warmroom and the support they need to recover. We know that the right support, at the right time, can change everything. In fact, 94% of young people moved on from Centrepoint positively last year. So your gift could help a young person feel hopeful at last. As Gemma says, “I don’t know where I’d be without Centrepoint. They helped me think about my future for the first time in years.”
Please sponsor a room and make your most important Christmas gift --- a better future for a homeless young person.
Please sponsor a room and make this Christmas the turning point in a young person’s life.

Scientists have created the first lab-grown coffee, which they say “smells and tastes like the real thing”. The Finland-based researchers used a process called cellular agriculture, which includes taking out cells from a small plant or animal sample(样本). In the latest example of lab-grown options, cell samples were taken from Arabica, a popular coffee plant that makes up 56 per cent of global production. With lab-grown coffee, the researchers say that they can deal with problems facing the global coffee industry, such as a need for clearing space for coffee plants to keep up with an increasing need for the drink worldwide.
The research is being conducted at VTT Technical Research Centre based in Espoo, Finland --- the country that drinks the most coffee per person. “The process uses real coffee plant cells,” Dr. Heiko Rischer, head of plant biotechnology at Finland’s VTT research center, said. “At first, a cell culture(细胞培养)is started from a plant part, for example, a leaf. The formed cells reproduced on a specific nutrient medium. In the end, the cells are transported to a bioreactor from which the biomass(生物量)is then harvested. The cells are dried and roasted then coffee can be brewed.”
The first collection produced by VTT in their laboratory smells and tastes like traditional coffee, according to the results of a “sensory analysis(感官分析)”. After drinking a cup, Dr. Rischer said, “There is a surprisingly full smell. In terms of smell and taste, our trained sensory judgement and analytical examination has found the coffee bears similarity to ordinary coffee,” he said. “The experience of drinking the very first cup was exciting.”
The idea that coffee cells could be used to make coffee was presented back in 1974 by plant scientist P.M. Townsley. But the VTT scientists have put the theory into practice with their lab-grown brew, which they think could hit the market by 2025.
24. What might be one of the causes of creating lab-grown coffee?
A. Dr. Heiko has been devoted to genetically engineering.
B. There exists an increasing demand market of coffee.
C. People in Finland drink the most amount of coffee.
D. The idea is based on a theory proving to be practical.
25. What does the underline word “brewed” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Produced. B. Designed. C. Collected. D. Measured.
26. What advantage does the lab-grown coffee have over the traditional one?
A. Lab-grown coffee makes people drinking it more excited.
B. Lab-grown coffee can be judged through people’s senses.
C. Lab-grown coffee tastes and smells better than ordinary coffee.
D. Lab-grown coffee can be made in labs and therefore save space.
27. What is the main purpose of this article?
A. To praise scientists sticking with creation.
B. To solve coffee shortage troubling people.
C. To introduce a new kind of Arabica coffee.
D. To present a research on man-made coffee.

To prepare for real-life emergencies, rescue teams must practice. They practice putting on ice suits, working with ropes, and using hand signals to communicate. And once the lake freezes, they practice ice rescue.
On a training day, a firefighter puts on his ice suit. He then pushes air out of the ice suit. If not, the trapped air bubble could make him float. He walks out onto the frozen lake to play the role of the “victim(受害者)”. He shakes, not from cold, but worries about not knowing when he’ll fall through! His first several steps feel solid. The ice seems thick. But 28 steps in: Crack! Water begins to come in through the ice. He slows down. At 31 steps --- Plunk! He falls through the ice. He keeps his mouth shut so he doesn’t swallow any water. It’s time to pretend he’s a victim, calling for help and struggling in the lake.
Two more firefighters, attached to the onshore team with ropes, walk onto the lake. They stay on different parts of the ice in case it breaks, both carryingprotective equipment like a belt or a board. Meanwhile, onshore team members wearing life vests talk to the “victim” to keep him calm. Near the ice hole, a rescuer drops to her belly and moves slowly. The second rescuer rolls. Both methods spread out the weight so they don’t also fall through the ice.
The firefighter with the board explains that they’re there to help. She hands the board to the victim and tells him to catch it. The second firefighter enters the water and ties the belt securely to the victim. He gives a signal and the onshore members pulls the rope. As the rope tightens, the rescuer lifts the
victim’s legs so he’s on his belly. Together, they sail across the ice.
Once they’re on land, firefighters exchange roles. When every firefighter has had a turn at rescuing and playing “victim”, they all put on warm, dry clothes and head back to the station for hot chocolate.
28. Why does the “victim” push air out of his ice suit before entering water?
A. To walk in the water. B. To sink beneath the ice.
C. To float on the surface. D. To approach firefighters.
29. During the practice, rescue members need to do the following EXCEPT ______.
A. stay apart on the ice surface
B. walk as fast as possible on ice
C. avoid stepping onto the thin ice
D. carry protective equipment
30. What can we learn from the text?
A. Ice rescue only requires excellent individual skills.
B. The rescue group perform such rescue practice daily.
C. The firefighters take turns to play the part of “victim”.
D. It is unnecessary to talk to the “victim” during the rescue.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. Rescue on thin ice B. Practice on ice land
C. Ways of saving people D. Bravery of firefighters

Tesla, an electric car maker, announced a software update in July that allows games to be played on the cars’ central touchscreens while they are moving.
Tesla regularly sends updates, much like a smartphone update. At first it was only possible to play games on the touchscreen when the car was parked, but this has changed following the
“2021.12.25.6” update, which was sent to owners in the UK, Europe and the US. Drivers can play gameswhile moving. A notice appears on the touchscreen when a game is first chosen asking the player to prove that they are not the driver, but this can be avoided by simply pressing the “I am a passenger” option.
Tesla has provokednegative response. Road safety groups say that even if it is the passenger rather than driver playing, the game takes up the entire touchscreen and could take the driver’s attention from driving.
People have expressed worries about the update. In one YouTube video, by the channel The MegaWatts, which mostly reviews new Tesla characters, a driver going through the latest Tesla updates in his Model 3 car is shocked to find he can play games while driving with no one sitting in the passenger seat.
The update appears to break British law, which states that drivers can only use screens when “viewing driving information related to the state of the car or its equipment, when navigation(导航)is shown, or when assisting in viewing the road around the car”, and that screens used for anything else “should not be seen by the driver while the car is being driven”.
In the US the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that it was looking into the new update and was in discussions with Tesla about the changes. “Distraction-affected(分心造成的)crashes are a concern, particularly in cars equipped with a group of convenience technologies such as entertainment screens,” it said.
32. Which of the following can properly describe the“2021.12.25.6” update?
A. It can promise safety to drivers’ life.
B. It is actually a kind of smartphone update.
C. It allows drivers to play games while driving.
D. It has been offered to people all over the world.
33. What does the underlined word “provoked” in the third paragraph mean?
A. Skipped.B. Exploded.C. Balanced.D. Caused.
34. Why does the author mention a driver in the fourth paragraph?
A. To attract readers’ attention to YouTube videos.
B. To indicate the power of the channel The MegaWatts.
C. To give an example to support the topic of this paragraph.
D. To make a comparison between the latest and the past Tesla updates.
35. What’s the public’s attitude towards Tesla’s new update according to the passage ?
A. Concerned. B. Amazed. C. Satisfied. D. Curious.
