Located in Shanghai’s coastal Lingang area, the Shanghai Astronomy Museum covers 38,000 square meters.

“The majority of astronomy museums in the world are about 20,000 square meters, so this is arguably the largest in the world.It will be able to host visits by around 6,000 people a day,” said Lin Qing, director of the museum’s research center.

The futuristic building will feature three main exhibitions — Home, Universe and Odyssey — displaying astronomical knowledge, theories about the universe, and the history and current status of human exploration of space.

The museum will use many technologies to engage visitors.They will be able to experience travelling on the moon with virtual reality glasses or lie down to watch the starry night sky in the planetarium, which has a diameter (直径) of 17 meters.

“We don’t want our exhibition to be like a dull textbook.We focus on creating an exciting experience for visitors so that they’ll leave the museum with a more curious mind for space and a love for astronomy,” said Xin Ge, director of the museum.

Besides interactive experiences, the museum will also exhibit many rare items, including a first edition copy of the first English translation of Isaac Newton’s Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy which was published in 1729.

In the meteorites (陨石) section, a 21.4-kilogram meteorite will be displayed under glass.It fell onto a farm in Changxing Island in the city in 1964 and the piece held by the museum is the largest one.

When it’s officially open, the museum will operate from 9 am to 4 pm, with entrance tickets priced at 30 yuan ($4.50) for adults and 15 yuan for students.

A starving polar bear seen hunting for food in a major industrial city in northern Siberia has been captured and will be transported to a wildlife park for treatment, according to local reports.

Photos showed the female animal trudging across a busy road with muddy paws, digging through rubble and trash and lying down from apparent exhaustion on the ground.

Experts believe the animal, initially thought to have wandered hundreds of miles from its natural habitat in the Arctic, instead may have been taken as a baby polar and raised in enclosed places by traders, according to the Siberian Times.

The experts explained that it is typically not females but males that migrate long distances, and said this polar bear was too clean to have made such a travel, the newspaper reported. They told the newspaper it's possible that poachers released the animal to avoid being caught and punished. Polar bear poaching has been banned in Russia for more than 60 years. Still, it has been estimated that as many as 200 of them are killed each year in the Far East region.

As the Washington post's Isaac Stanley-Becker reported, polar bears “are classified as a vulnerable species because of the 'ongoing and potential loss of their sea ice habitat resulting from climate change, according to the World Wildlife Fund”.

Staffan Lindeberg is a professor in the department of medicine at the University of Lund in Sweden. He was interested in a Stone Age diet. In the early 1990s he travelled to Papua New Guinea to study the diet of the people on the island of Kitava as it was very close to the Stone Age diet. While there, he found that people did not suffer from heart attacks, diabetes (糖尿病), being overweight and many other diseases common in western countries.

As a result of his findings, he decided to test patients in Sweden to see how such a diet would affect them. Fourteen patients followed a Stone Age diet while another fifteen followed a Mediterranean diet, also healthy with lots of fruit and vegetables. All of the patients in the tests had high blood sugar levels, most suffered from diabetes and all had heart problems.

At the end of three months, the group following the Mediterranean diet had reduced their blood sugar levels by a small amount but those following the Stone Age diet had much lower levels of sugar in their blood. The patients in both groups also lost weight although the level of sugar in the blood and the patients’ weight didn’t seem to be related.

So, what is it about the Stone Age diet that can make us healthier? The diet contains some meat, fish, vegetables and nuts (坚果) but it doesn’t contain any dairy products (乳制品) or grains, and there is no salt.

The next question is whether the Kitava people are healthier than us. After all, their life expectancy (预期寿命) is much lower. According to Professor Lindeberg, this is not as simple as we may think. Because of their poor health care, there is more chance of them dying at a young age. However, if people on Kitava manage to reach fifty, they are likely to live as long as people in more developed countries.

Cigarette smoking is injurious to health—everyone knows that. Well, till a few decades ago, people were unaware that smoking could cause lung and heart diseases and cigarette packs never had a warning on them, like they do now.

In recent years, research has shown that smoking is dangerous and it has now been made compulsory for all cigarette manufacturers to have a warning printed on the cover. It states that “Cigarette smoking is injurious to health.”

However, cigarette manufacturers do not want people to stop buying their product after reading the warning. So, they have found a convenient way of dealing with the problem. They print the warning in such small letters that one can barely read them.

European health authorities are now insisting that the size of the letters used in these health warnings should be increased. One British engineering firm, Molins, that supplies machines to make cigarettes, has gone a step ahead. The company wants to patent a talking cigarette packet that recites the health warning every time you open it.

The talking packet uses a technology similar to the one used in musical cards. A stiff plastic strip is attached to the lid of the cigarette packet. When the pack is opened, the strip comes into contact with a tiny battery cell (the kind used in watches), which is wired to a small speaker on the base of the pack. This triggers a playback of the health warning.

Will cigarette manufacturers choose these talking packets?

Anti-smoking organizations are thrilled with the invention and are insisting that all cigarette manufacturers should use these packs.
