I'm very thankful to the cat and it always makes me think of the time I was with him. Five years ago, when my father was dying, I travelled a thousand miles from home to be with him in his last days. I felt very sad and it was one of the most difficult and painful times in my life.
After he passed away, I stayed alone in his flat. There were so many things to deal with. I was lonely and I hated the silence of the flat.
But one evening the silence(寂静)was broken∶I heard crying outside. I opened the door to find a little cat on the steps. He was thin and poor. He looked the way I felt. I brought him inside and gave him a can of fish. He ate it and then almost immediately fell asleep.
The next morning I checked with neighbors and learned that the cat had been left by his owner. His owner had moved out, so the little cat was there all alone, just like I was. As I walked back to the flat, I tried to work out what to do with him. Having something else to take care of seemed like the very last thing I needed. But as soon as I opened the flat door, he ran to me and jumped into my arms. It was clear from that moment that he didn't want to go anywhere. I started calling him Willis in order to remember my father's best friend.
From then on, things grew easier. With Willis in my lap, time seemed to pass much faster. When the time finally came for me to return home, I had to decide what to do about Willis. There was absolutely no way I would leave without him.
It's been five years since my father died. Over the years, several people have said how nice it was of me to rescue(营救)the cat. But I know that we rescued each other. I may have given him a home but he gave me something greater.

Nowadays, more and more people realize the importance of having a healthy eating habit. As we know, the daily food we eat affects us in different ways. Sometimes, people are not clear about what kind of food is healthy or not. The USDA has prepared a food guide(指南)to help people learn about which kind of food is the healthiest to eat. The food guide describes six main food groups: meat (like fish and chicken), dairy (like milk and cheese), grains(like bread and rice), fruit, and vegetables. The last group is fats and sweets. Though this guide was from the US government, it is also very useful for people in other countries.
The result of the study shows that too much animal fat does harm to our health. For example, In the USA, people eat a lot of meat and only a small amount of grains, fruit and vegetables. As a result, they have a high rate(率)of cancer(癌症)and heart disease. Japanese people eat large amounts of grains and very little meat. The Japanese live longer than anyone else in the world. However, when Japanese people move to the US, the rate of heart disease and cancer rises as their eating habit changes. And as hamburgers and other high-fat foods become popular in Japan, the rate of heart disease and cancer is rising there as well. People are also eating more meat and dairy food in other countries, in which the disease rate is rising along with the change of the way people eat. Doctors suggest people eat more grains, fruit and vegetables and less meat and dairy food. It is important for children to eat healthily as well as their parents. When parents have poor eating habits, their children usually do, too. After all, children eat the same way as their parents. When parents eat healthy food, the children will learn to enjoy it, too. Then they will develop good eating habits easily.

Erik rang his grandparents' doorbell and silently wished the next four hours would go by quickly. He didn't want to give up his whole Saturday afternoon at his grandparents' house where there were no kids in the neighborhood.
"You're right on time," Grandma Bethany said, opening the door. "There's tea and cake in the dining room."
Cake? At least the first ten minutes would go by quickly. Erik hung his coat on the rack by the door and saw a strange looking key hanging on a hook. "Grandpa Bill, what's this funny key for?"
"That's a skeleton key. It opens the best room in this house" Grandpa Bill whispered, so no one else could hear. "It's the room I go to when your grandmother tries to make me help with the dishes."
"What's so special about the room?" Erik asked.
"It's a game room," Grandpa Bill said. "Take the key and see if you can find the room by the time I finish my tea."
Erik grabbed the key and stared at it. "A skeleton key? It looks old." Erik decided the oldest things in the house were probably upstairs. He headed past the dining room and to the stairs. Grandpa Bill sipped his tea and shook his head.
Erik knew that meant he was going the wrong way. He headed back to the front door where he'd found the key.
Erik thought about the oldest part of the house. "The basement! It's the first part that's built." He rushed to the basement door and looked at the lock. It was different from a normal lock. He put the key inside and turned it. With a click, the door opened.
Erik turned on the light and walked down the stairs. The basement was one large room with a pool table in the middle and a bathroom on the far wall.
"Great!" Erik said.

My father was Chief engineer of a merchant ship, which was sunk in World War Ⅱ. The book Night of the U-boats told the story.
Memories
In September, 1940, my mother, sister and I went to Swansea, where my father’s ship was getting ready to sail. We brought him a family photograph to be kept with him at all times and keep him sail.
Then I remember my mother lying face down, sobbing. She had heard from a friend that the ship had been sunk by a torpedo (鱼雷).
I can remember the arrival of the telegram (电报), which in those days always brought bad news. My grandmother opened it. It read, “Safe, Love Ted.”
My most vivid memory is being woken and brought down to sit on my father’s knee, his arm in a bandage.
He was judged unfit to return to sea and took a shore job in Glasgow for the rest of the war. For as long as I can remember, he had a weak heart. Mother said it was caused by the torpedoes. He said it was because of the cigarettes. Whichever, He died suddenly in his early 50s.
Ten years later I read Night of the U-boats and was able to complete the story.
Torpedo
One torpedo struck the ship. Father was in the engine room, where the third engineer was killed. He shut down the engines to slow the ship making it easier for it to be abandoned.
By the time he got on deck (甲板) he was alone. Every lifeboat was gone except one which had stuck firm. When he tried to cut it free it swung against the ship, injuring his hand and arm. He had no choice but to jump—still with the photograph in his pocket.
Three days later, he and other survivors were safe in Glasgow. All 23 with him signed the back of the photograph.
In my room is the book and the photograph. Often, glass in hand, I have wondered how I would have dealt with an explosion, a sinking ship, a jump into a vast ocean and a wait for rescue? Lest (以免) we forget, I have some more whisky and toast the heroes of the war.
47.We can infer that the mother and children went to Swansea _____.
A.to meet a friend B.to see the father off
C.to take a family photo D.to enjoy the sailing of the ship
48.What did the author learn about the father from the telegram?
A.he was still alive. B.His knee was broken.
C.His ship had been sunk. D.He had arrived in Glasgow.
49.What can we know about the author’s father after his ship was attacked?
A.He lost his arm B.He repaired the engines.
C.He managed to take a lifeboat. D.He was the last to leave the ship.
50.What is the passage mainly about?
A.A group of forgotten heroes B.A book describing a terrifying battle.
C.A ship engineer’s wartime experience. D.A merchant’s memories of a sea rescue.

One day you open the fridge and find some moldy (发霉的) food. But before you can throw it away, your mother stops you. She doesn't want to waste food. She cuts off the moldy part and eats the rest. Is it safe to do this?
Mold can grow on almost all kinds of food. Mold is usually green, white, black or grey. Mold makes food soft and changes its color. Moldy food tastes quite bad.
If you find mold in soft food, just throw it away. Soft food, such as bread, tomatoes or hot dogs usually has water. This allows mold to easily grow below its surface(表面). Bacteria (细菌) can also grow along with it.
But it’s easy to take away mold from hard food. Mold can't grow very deeply inside this kind of food. According to the BBC, you should cut about 2.5 cm around and below the mold to clear it. It’s OK to cut the moldy parts out of hard food and eat the rest. But if the food is totally covered with mold, you should still throw it away.
Most kinds of mold are bad for us. But some kinds of mold can be used to make food. For example, penicillin (青霉菌) can be used to make many types of cheeses, and they're quite delicious as well.

The Earth Day was set up in 1970. Now, it is a worldwide event because the Earth is facing a lot of problems. Do you know why? Let’s listen to what the Earth says.
Earth Says
I am the mother Earth,
Filled with water, air, and life,
Humans, trees, birds, water, animals, and wildlife.
I spin and turn all year round the orbit,
To give you all the seasons and climate.
You people use my land, air, water, and soil,
But keep on filling it with litter and allowing it to spoil.
I provide you with air, food, and home to live,
With greedy lust, you destroy the nature I give,
And plot your own nature’s death.
The air you fill with smoke,
Makes my breath choke.
You make my heart fill with strife,
By cutting down the green forests,
And pushing up the green-house gases.
What was once a clean sea and pure soil,
Is now all barren, clogged with waste and oil.
How long can I stand the trouble?
I start to scream and tremble.
I give you all I have, until my end,
But it’s now all in your hands to defend and mend.
29. What is the mother Earth like according to Stanza (诗节) 1?

One Saturday Maria and I had a 30-mile bike ride. It seemed perfect. We started at 7:00 a.m. in beautiful spring weather. At 10:30 a.m., when we stopped for a rest, we both felt wonderful. And then a brisk wind came. That was when our perfect day began to change.
By noon, we knew a serious thunderstorm was blowing our way. Dark clouds rolled up our of the southwest. A stinging wind burned our faces. There was no way to stay out of the storm. We would have to wait it out, but where?
Then things went from bad to worse. The temperature dropped suddenly. I looked up and saw the sky now turned dark green. Trees and crops were bent over by the wind. No animals were in sight.
Then a blue car stopped beside our bikes. The driver shouted, “Get in!” She looked frightened, and so did we. We did as she said. That was when the hail(冰雹)started. Ice, the size of golf balls, hit the windows of the car.
She drove fast to the north. Maria and I looked back at the black sky. Maria screamed, “Tornado(龙卷风)!” It was so close that I could see trees, doors, and all kinds of other things that this monster swallowed(吞).
My heart moved up to my throat and was beating so hard, I thought it would jump out of my body. I had never been so frightened. We would never run faster than the tornado! The driver turned to us and said calmly, “There’s an overpass(立交桥)ahead. We’ll stay under it for protection.”
When we parked, we jumped out of the car and ran to the wall of the overpass. Before I could count to 20, there came a loud noise. It sounded like a train passing overhead. Then, suddenly, it was over. We had made it.
Soon we were all laughing with relief(轻松). We were shaken but excited. What a story I would have to tell at school.

Napoga is a 12-year-old girl in Ghana, Africa. It is hard for her family to get clean water. Every morning, she leaves home at half past five to get clean water for her family in a village far away. It takes her six hours to get enough clean water for daily cooking and drinking. She has no time to go to school or to play with her friends. Millions of people in the world are like Napoga. They can’t get enough clean water to keep healthy.
Earth Day is April 22. But on all other days, we must also remember it. The water we use is the most important natural resource(自然资源)on the earth.
Water covers 70 percent of the earth’s surface(表面).But most of that is sea water. We can’t use it for very many things. Fresh water covers only one percent of the earth’s surface.
You probably feel lucky that your life isn’t as hard as Napoga’s, But that doesn’t mean you don’t have to worry about water. We all face serious water problems. One of them is water pollution. All kinds of things from cars, factories, farms and homes make our rivers, lakes, and oceans dirty. Polluted water is very bad for people to drink. And dirty water is bad for fish, too. Now, thirty-four percent of all kinds of fish are dying out.
How do cars and factories make our water dirty? First, they pollute the air. Then, when it rains, the rain water comes down and makes our drinking water dirty. Dirty rain, called acid rain(酸雨), is also bad for plants, animals and buildings.
Scientists say that in 30 years, more than half of the people in the world won’t have enough clean water. We have to learn how to save more water for ourselves and our children. Here is some advice for saving water.
·Turn off the water while you brush your teeth. You can save as much as 450 liters(升)each month.
·Leaky taps(漏水的龙头)waste a lot of water. Fix them right away.
·You can easily cut your 10-minute showers in half, and you’ll be just as clean.
·When you wash dishes, don’t let the water run.
·Only wash clothes when you have a lot to wash. If your washing machine isn’t full, you are wasting water!
31. Why can’t Napoga go to school?
A. Because her family is poor.
B. Because she doesn’t like studying.
C. Because she has to take care of her little brother.
D. Because she has to get clean water for her family.
32. How many people live in short of water in the world?
A. Thousands of people B. Millions of people
C. Hundreds of people D. Billions of people.
33. From the passage, what information do we know about the water on the earth?
A. There is 70% of fresh water.
B. We don’t need to worry about water.
C. There is very little water for our living.
D. Sea water is more widely used than fresh water.
34. Acid rain ________.
A. is only bad for living things
B. can be produced in factories

Sam was eleven. His last name was Beaver. He was strong for his age and had black hair and dark eyes like an Indian. Sam walked like an Indian, too, putting one foot straight in front of the other and making very little noise. The swamp through which he was traveling was a wild place. There was no road, and it was soft and wet underfoot, which made walking difficult.
Every four or five minutes, Sam took his compass(指南针)out of his pocket and checked his way to make sure he was going in a right direction. Canada is a big place. Much of it is wild land. To get lost in the woods and swamps of western Canada would be a serious matter. As he trudged on, the boy’s mind was full of the wonder of what he had seen. Not many people in the world have seen the living place of a Trumpeter Swan. Sam had found one on the lonely pond on this day in spring.
He had seen the two great white birds with their long white necks and black bills.
Nothing he had ever seen before in all his life had made him feel quite the way he felt, on that wild little pond, in the presence of those two large swans.
They were so much bigger than any bird he had ever seen before. The nest was big, too. The female was sitting on eggs; the male walked slowly back and forth, guarding her.

When you are learning English, listening, speaking and writing are important, but reading can also be very helpful. When you read, you can not only learn some new words, but also learn how to use these English words. When you read, it gives you a good example for writing.
Good reading tips:
Try to read at the right level (水平). Read something that you can (more or less) understand. If you need to stop every three words to use a dictionary, it is not interesting.
Try to increase (增加) the number of your new words. If there are four or five new words on a page, write them in your notebook. But you don’t have to write them while you read. Instead, try to guess their meanings as you read: mark (标记) them with a pen. Then come back when you have finished reading to look them up in a dictionary and write them in your own vocabulary (词汇) book. Then try to remember them.
Try to read regularly. For example, read for a short time once a day. Fifteen minutes every day is better than two hours every Sunday. Fix (固定) a time to read and keep to it. You could read for fifteen minutes when you go to bed, or when you get up or at lunchtime.
Read what interests you. Choose a book or a magazine about a subject that you like, because you are going to spend time and money reading it. So, choose an interesting book. You can also read newspapers. There are many English newspapers in China. For example, 21st Century Teens. It is easy enough for you to understand. There is something interesting in it.
