According to a recent report, kids in primary school spend about six hours every week doing their homework.. So kids hate homework. However, their parents hate homework, too.
Is it good for kids to do homework? Of course, a great number of researches do show that kids can remember what they have learnt in class better by finishing their homework on time and homework itself plays an important role in developing their learning shills, such as independent thinking and creativity.
But for parents, the result is not the same. After a day of hard work, most of them feel like they’re going through school a second time when they sit down with their children each night to help with their homework. And a recent survey found that 46 percent of parents feel like they don’t spend enough quality time with their children, because they spend too much time doing the housework or helping with homework. And another 29 percent of parents have arguments with their kids often when they have different answers to the same question.
Now several education scientists strongly advise parents to stop helping. They say it will give their kids more independence and give parents back their free time. At the same time, the number of homework – connected arguments will be less at home. Katy Smith, an education scientist, says, “ You don’t have to know everything. Children need to put their hands up for help and so do parents. Use your resources – online teachers, or even your neighborhood – just ask.”

Smoking in indoor public places including public working places, public transport vehicles and some other special outdoor working places has been banned(禁止)in China since January 2011.Let’s look at the following advantages of banning smoking.
First, banning smoking will not only help in saving smokers from health problems and diseases, but will also be good for passive(被动)smokers. When the smoker is smoking in a restaurant, the people around him are sure to breathe in the smoke and suffer from the diseases an active smoker gets. If smoking is banned, spread of these diseases can be controlled.
Next, banning smoking will put stress on smokers to give up. Since a smoker is prevented from smoking, he will learn how to live without smoking for long hours. When a smoker doesn’t smell or see anybody around him smoking, it might reduce his wish to smoke too. As a result, people have to give up smoking.
Smoking in public places influences non-smokers to start smoking, especially adolescents. When teens see people around them smoking, they will follow them easily. Thus the number of teen smokers will increase. Also asthma(哮喘)and other problems are often seen in children living around smokers. So if it is banned, these places will become safe for children and teenagers.
Looking from the economic point of view, smoking should be banned to increase work productivity(生产率).Employees(雇员)who smoke usually take breaks to smoke while working. So the number of hours they put in their work is smaller.
If you see from the environment point of view, smoking should be banned. Smoking causes air pollution. If it is banned, it will help keep the environment from getting worse.

( ) 4. According to the text, the underlined word “adolescents” means ______.

What is the most important day of your life? For many people the answer is your Wedding Day-the day when you marry another person and promise to live together as husband or wife for the rest of your life. Wedding celebrations differ from country to country-in China the bride wears red whilst; in India the wedding can continue for three days. However, in Britain the bride wears white and wedding usually only lasts for one day. In the UK it is possible to get married in a religious or civil ceremony. A religious ceremony takes place in a church. A civil ceremony, on the other hand, can be held in a registry office, in a hotel, or even on a boat! On the day of the wedding the bride and groom are kept separate until the ceremony. It is said to be bad luck if the groom sees the bride in her dress before the wedding. The bride arrives at the ceremony accompanied by her father and bridesmaids. He officially gives her away to her husband. During the ceremony the happy couple exchange vows and give each other wedding rings which they will wear forever. At the end of the ceremony they kiss. Afterwards they go outside where friends and family throw rice or confetti(婚礼中抛撒的五彩纸屑)over them. Then they go on to the reception where there is a lot of food and drink. After the meal the father of the bride and the best man(男傧相,伴郎)make speeches. Then the bride and groom take the first dance. It’s a lot of fun. Finally, at the end of the party the newly-weds leave to go on honeymoon, usually to a very romantic destination. | ||||||||||||

While I was in 9th grade, I built a circuit for the traffic system of our city. After getting the first prize, I got this valuable advice from my father, "Do whatever interests you, and don't let the work challenge you, make sure you are challenging that work."
I have always preferred the projects which are challenging and related to real life problems. I clearly remember building a shipping program several years ago. I divided the whole project into several small sections. When I understood it clearly, used my brainstorming skill on it, and gave some basic ideas. Then I asked my professor for help before jumping into coding. At first, I did not know how to ask questions correctly and always asked the question "How do I do it?" As I kept working and discussed with my professor,
I became more comfortable and those"How" questions soon turned into "What if I do this and that" types of questions. It took me four days to write the code. The desire to solve the problem kept me sleepless all nights brainstorming in even greater details. Every time I saw my program running smoothly, I exploded with joy. I still remember the last day of my work. I was getting some problem and didn't know what to do. At that moment, a man came in to clean. He has headphones, and he was dancing while cleaning the room. Seeing this, I burst out laughing. That moment calmed me. I regained energy and interest and started to work again, and soon I fixed the problem.
My success in the project proved that breaking up a large problem into small parts could help find a possible solution. Discussing the problem with others was also very beneficial. Now I have gained the confidence to attempt any kind of project.

As a boy, there was nothing I liked better than Sunday afternoons at my grandfather's farm in western Pennsylvania. Surrounded by miles of winding stone walls, the house and field provided endless hours of fun for a city kid like me. I was used to tidy living rooms that seemed to whisper, "Not to be touched!"
I can still remember one afternoon when I was eight years old. Since my first visit to the farm, I had wanted more than anything to be allowed to climb the stone walls surrounding the houses. My parents would never approve. The walls were old; some stones were missing, others loose and falling. Still, I entered the living room, where the adults had gathered after Sunday dinner.
"I, uh-I wanna climb the stone walls," I said. Everyone looked up. "Can I climb the stone walls? Immediately voices of disagreement went up from the women in the room." Heavens, no! You'll hurt yourself!" I wasn't too surprised; the response was just as I'd expected. But before I could leave the room, I was stopped by my grandfather's loud voice. "Now hold on just a minute," I heard him say, "Let the boy climb the stone walls. He has to learn to do things for himself.""Go", he said to me, "come and see me when you get back." For the next two and a half hours I climbed those old walls and had the time of my life. Later I met with my grandfather to tell him about my adventures. I'll never forget what he said. "Fred", he said, smiling, "You made this day a special day just by being yourself. Always remember,
here's only one person in this whole world like you, and I like you exactly as you are."
Many years have passed since then, and today I host the television program Mister Rogers Neighborhood, seen by millions of children throughout America. There have been changes over the years, but one thing remains the same: my message to children at the end of almost every visit. "There's only one person in this whole world like you," the kids can count on hearing me say, "and people can like you exactly as you are."
