    RAMCO TECHNOLOGIES
    Where Technology Shapes Tomorrow
    Marketing @Ramco.comewww.Ramco.com
    TO: Rachel Mohler, Vice President
    Harrison Fontentot, Public Relations
    FROM: Mike Gonzalez
SUBJECT: Three Ways to Increase Ramco’s Community Involvement
    DATE: March 5, 2019
At our planning session in early February, our division managers stressed the need to generate favourable publicity for our new Ramco facility in Mayfield. Knowing that such publicity will highlight Ramco’s visibility in Mayfield, I think the company’s image might be enhanced in the following three ways.
    CREATE A SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Ramco would receive favourable publicity by creating a scholarship at Mayfield Community College for any student interested in a career in technology. A one-year scholarship would cost $6,800. The scholarship could be awarded by a committee composed of Ramco executives. Such a scholarship would emphasize Ramco’s enthusiastic support for the latest technical education at a local college.
    OFFER SITE TOURS
Guided tours of the Mayfield facility would introduce the community to Ramco’s innovative technology. These tours might be organized for academic, community, and civic groups. Individuals would see the care we take in protecting the environment in our production and equipment choices and the speed with which we ship our products. Of special interest to visitors would be Ramco’s use of industrial robots working alongside our employees. Since these tours would be scheduled in advance, they should not conflict with our production schedules.
    PROVIDE GUEST SPEAKERS
Many of our employees would be excellent guest speakers at civic and educational meetings in the Mayfield area. Possible topics include the advances Ramco has made in designing and engineering and how these advances have helped consumers and the local economy.
Thanks for giving me your comments as soon as possible. If we are going to put one or more of these suggestions into practice before the facility opens in mid-April, we’ll need to act before the end of the month.
1.If Ramco establishes a scholarship, it will _____.
A.benefit students at colleges in Mayfield
B.highlight Ramco’s support for the latest technical advances
C.be offered to MCC students interested in a career in technology
D.be jointly awarded by Ramco executives and college professors
2.Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.Site tours of Mayfield facility can be arranged at any time.
B.The three measures are scheduled to be carried out in mid-April.
C.The three measures are sure to create favourable image for Mayfield.
D.Guest speakers will talk about Ramco’s advances in designing and engineering.
3.What type of writing is this passage?
A.A letter of introduction. B.A letter of proposal.
C.A letter of recommendation. D.A letter of complaints.

Some plants get so hungry that they eat flies, spiders, and even small frogs. What’s more amazing is that these plants occur naturally (in special environments) in every state. In fact, they’re found on every continent except Antarctica.
You’ve probably seen a Venus’ flytrap. It’s often sold in museum gift stores, department stores, and even supermarkets. A small plant, it grows 6 to 8 inches tall in a container. At the end of its stalks (茎) are specially modified leaves that act like traps. Inside each trap is a lining of tiny trigger hairs. When an insect lands on them, the trap suddenly shuts. Over the course of a week or so, the plant feeds on its catch.
The Venus flytrap is just one of more than 500 species of meat-eating plants, says Barry Meyers-Rice, the editor of the International carnivorous (食肉的) Plant Society’s Newsletter. Note: Despite any science-fiction stories you might have read, no meat-eating plant does any danger to humans.
Dr. Meyers-Rice says a plant is meat-eating, only if it does all four of the following: “attract, kill, digest, and absorb” some forms of insects, including flies, butterflies, and moths. Meat-eating plants look and act like other green plants — well, most of the time.
All green plants make sugar through a process called photosynthesis Plants use the sugar to make food. What makes “meat-eating” plants different is their bug-catching leaves. They need insects for one reason: nitrogen. Nitrogen is a nutrient that they can’t obtain any other way. While almost all green plants on our planet get nitrogen from the soil, “meat-eating” plants can’t. They live in places where nutrients are hard or almost impossible to get from the soil because of its acidity. So they’ve come to rely on getting nitrogen from insects and small animals. In fact, nutrient-rich soil is poisonous to “meat-eating” plants. Never fertilize them! But don’t worry, either, if they never seem to catch any insects. They can survive, but they’ll grow very slowly.
4.According to the passage, carnivorous plants ________.
A.only grow in wild field B.are rare to see
C.are as common as flies D.cannot grow on Antarctica
5.Venus flytrap preys on insects with ________.
A.its numerous long an thin stalks B.a container where it grows
C.its insect-catching leaves D.the lining of tiny trigger hairs
6.We can conclude from the third paragraph that ________.
    A.carnivorous plants are dangerous
    B.carnivorous plants are fictional
    C.carnivorous plants occasionally eat book
D.carnivorous plants are harmless to humans
7.In the eyes of the author, which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.Carnivorous plants cannot grow in acid soil
B.Carnivorous plants can grow in nutrient-poor soil
C.Carnivorous plants will die if they cannot catch any insects
D.Carnivorous plants can get nitrogen from nutrient-rich soil

When my mother died a few years ago, we looked through boxes in which she had lovingly stored her children’s lives. Handwritten report cards from grade schoo1. News cuttings about games. Postcards from summer camps. And so many photos: birthdays,, graduations, weddings and trips to wonderful places.
After my father’s death, I found many handwritten pity letters from his friends. Rereading them once a year, I am transported back to the time I miss so much. Of course, I received many emails about Dad as well, but I wouldn’t begin to know how or where to find them. Besides, personal messages are more meaningful when presented in the hand of the sender.
My kids, now in their 20s, have mostly digital keepsakes. Increasingly they rely on Facebook to store memories. Their letters from college, sent by email, are long gone. Many photos, never printed, have disappeared. I really worry that for them.
In Andrew Hoskins’new book Digital Memory Studies, he concludes, “Despite the gradual disappearance of photographs, letters and other objects that are reminders of people and past experiences, their keeping is like holding on to those people and experiences. ” Digital items offer nothing of the kind.
Mark B. McKinley explained that collecting physical memorabilia(值得纪念的事物) can serve as a means of control to bring out a comfort zone in one’s life, calming fears and easing worries. It’s no wonder that children are fond of collecting things — it’s important to their development.
One mother says, “My Son collects pieces of broken stones.” The kid might become a great geologist or a successful businessman. But will his mom print out a photo of that unique collection? Will his degree in geology be memorialized on paper, or will he be given a digital diploma? And will he collect his first paycheck or will he be paid by direct deposit?
8.What can be concluded from the first three paragraphs?
    A.People don’t collect physical objects.
B.Hard copies fail to preserve our memory.
C.Physical objects aren’t collected for memory.
D.Memories are stored on the Internet forever.
9.What is Andrew Hoskins’attitude towards digital memory?
    A.He is against it.
    B.He is hopeful about it.
    C.He is confused about it.
    D.He doesn’t care about it.
10.What benefit does collecting physical memorabilia bring to children?
    A.It cures their illnesses.
    B.It makes them feel relaxed.
C.It keeps their life under contro1.
D.It helps them lead a comfortable life.
11.Why does the author raise some questions in the last paragraph?
    A.To explain a unique collection.
B.To offer direct support to the boy.
C.To encourage readers to share their ideas.
D.To show her worry about the loss of collecting.

    Is Paperless Office Really Paperless?
A rising economy increased paper sales by 6 to 7 percent each year in the early to mid-1990s, and the convenience of desktop printing allowed office workers to indulge anything and everything. In 2004, Ms. Dunn, a communications supplies director, said that plain white office paper would see less than a 4 percent growth rate, a primary reason for which is that some 47 percent of the workforce entered the job market after computers had already been introduced to offices.
For office innovators, the dream of paperless office is an example of high-tech arrogance (傲慢). Today’s office service is overwhelmed by more newspapers than ever before. After decades of development, the American government can finally get rid of the madness on paper. In the past, the demand for paper has been far ahead of growth in the American economy, but the sales have slowed markedly over the past two to three years, despite the good economic conditions.
“Old habits are hard to break,” says Ms. Dunn. “There are some functions that paper serves where a screen display doesn’t work. Those functions are both its strength and its weakness.” Analysts attribute the decline to such factors as advances in digital databases and communication systems. Escaping our craving for paper, however, will be anything but an easy affair.
“We’re finally seeing a reduction in the amount of paper being used per worker in the workplace,” says John Maine, vice president of a paper economic consulting firm. “More information is being transmitted electronically, and an increasing number of people are satisfied that information exists only in electronic form without printing multiple backups.”
To reduce paper use, some companies are working to combine digital and paper capabilities. For example, Xerox is developing electronic paper: thin digital displays that respond to a stylus, like a pen on paper. Marks can be erased or saved digitally. Even with such technological advances, the increasing amounts of electronic data necessarily require more paper.
“The information industry today is composed of a thin paper crust surrounding an electronic core,” Mr. Saffo wrote. The growing paper crust is most noticeable, but the hidden electronic core is far larger and growing more rapidly. The result is that we are becoming paperless, but we hardly notice at all. “That’s one of the greatest ironies of the information age,” Saffo says. “It’s just common sense that the more you talk to someone by phone or computer, it inevitably leads to a face-to-face meeting. The best thing for the aviation industry was the Internet.”
12.Which of the following statements is NOT a reason for the slowdown in American paper sales?
    A.Workforce with better computer skills.
B.Slow growth of the U.S. economy.
    C.Changing patterns in paper use.
    D.Changing employment trends.
13.What does the last sentence in Para 3 mean?
A.We have to look at paper consumption from different angles.
B.There is little chance that paper consumption will fall in the digital age.
C.Paper consumption will be greatly reduced in the digital age.
D.People are no longer so addicted to paper in the digital age.
14.The innovations from Xerox and other companies feature _________.
A.the intergration of digital technology with traditional paper
B.the chance from traditional paper to digital technology
C.the combination of the use of computer screens and cell phones
D.a new type of computer writing and communication
15.What can we draw from the example of the aviation industry in the last paragraph?
A.The dream of the paperless office will be realized some day.
B.People usually prefer to have face-to-face meetings instead of using computers.
C.More digital data use leads to greater paper use in the digital time.
D.Some people are no longer opposed to video-conferencing.

    Traffic Regulation and Accident Prevention
We live in a remarkable time, and many of the once fatal diseases can now be cured with modern medicine and surgery. ___16___ Expectations of life have greatly increased. But though the possibility of living a long and happy life is greater than ever before, every day we witness the incredible killing of men, women and children on the roads. Man fights against the motor-car. It is a never-ending battle which man is losing. ___17___
Nothing can seriously increase your risk of potentially fatal car accidents other than speeding and failing to pay due attention to weather conditions. ___18___ There is no doubt that the motor-car often brings out a man’s very worst qualities. Usually quiet and pleasant people, when they are behind the steering wheel, will become unrecognizable. They are impolite, aggressive, self-willed like two-year-old, completely selfish. All their hidden frustrations, disappointments, and jealousy seem to be caused by driving.
___19___ It’s all for his own convenience. Due to a serious tragedy, the city is almost uninhabitable and the huge parking lot makes the town ugly. The destruction of rural areas and the annual mass killings are just a statistic, easily forgotten. With regard to driving, the laws of some countries are not strict and even the strictest are not strict enough.
Traffic rules are for everyone to follow under any circumstances, and no one can make an exception unless you make a joke of your own life. Universally accepted standards can only have a significant beneficial on the incidence of accidents. Governments should develop safety codes for manufacturers. ___20___ These measures may sound cruel. However, if these measures result in a reduction in the loss of life every year, they should certainly not be considered serious. After all, the world belongs to humans, not cars.
A.There are five reasons for the accident and you are guilty.
B.Every year thousands of people are horribly killed, and we sit still and let it happen.
C.Surprisingly, society should smile at the driver and forgive him.
D.Someone has rightly said that when a person is sitting behind the steering wheel, his car becomes an extension of his personality.
E.All advertisements that emphasize power and performance should be banned.
F.It is time to develop a universal norm to reduce this senseless waste of human life.
G.It is almost certain that one day a cure will be found for the rest of the diseases.

The Best Book I’ve Ever Read
Frankly, I have read nearly all of the great works of literature, but no book has ever impressed me as deeply or directly ___36___ Joel Stein’s Man Made: A Stupid Quest for Masculinity.
Haven’t we all, on some level, been Jewish boys in New Jersey in the 1970s with only female friends, an Easy-Bake oven and a strong ___37___ (prefer) for show tunes? Haven’t we all had ___38___ panic attack when learning we’re going to have a son, since that means we’re going to have to figure out how to throw footballs, watch other people throw footballs and decide ___39___ to be happy or sad about the results of football throwing? Haven’t we all then tried to correct our lack of maleness by becoming a man, fighting fires with firefighters, ___40___ (drive) a Lamborghini and doing three days of Army training camp? I know I have.
The only parts I didn’t fully enjoy were ones in which the author suffered ___41___ (horrible). After just three hours of training camp, he fainted weakly into the arms of a soldier. The film rights to Man Made have already been sold to Fox, and I hope it gets ___42___ (turn) into a movie with George Clooney playing the Stein role, since they remind me so much of each other.
Although this is only Stein’s first book, I would already consider ___43___ (he) as someone like David Sedaris, Dave Barry, James Thurber, Mark Twain and Abraham Lincoln. I ___44___ (recommend) Man Made not just to all my friends and family but also to strangers on Twitter over and over again.
“Sun, sun, sun, here it comes…”
Danny sang while his fingers pressed and pulled skillfully at the guitar strings, delivering a slow and peaceful tune. A circle of audience had formed, nodding and moving slowly to the song.
Lying at the feet of the street performer was his most adoring fan: One-Eyed, a white stray (流浪) dog with pieces of brown. Danny felt the name was suitable considering its physical disability. Usually, One-Eyed would bark loudly as Danny performed. Much to his annoyance, people often mistook the pair as owner and pet. At this time, Danny would reply, “My dog? No!”, eyes rolling at the idea. How he wished the dog would leave him alone instead!
On a snowy night, while Danny was performing, a bird flew downward, landing into the midst of the crowd. It cooed happily as if to harmonize with Danny. Unfortunately, that did not sit well with One-Eyed, which immediately bounced at it and the bird flew away desperately.
The unexpected chaos upturned Danny’s hat, which could have been filled with notes and coins from his appreciative audience, leaving it ignored on the ground. “Argh! The hateful dog!” Danny broke down, thinking to himself, “Either the dog goes or I go!”
On the next night, Danny tried to find a new place and chanced upon the park. For a while his earnings were good unsurprisingly as there was a steady flow of visitors. However, that didn’t last long. One-Eyed came along and appointed itself as Danny’s guardian. “Argh! Here comes the hateful dog again!” That night, Danny hadn't made enough money he should have, all thanks to the troublesome dog.
Danny was almost mad with One-Eyed. “What should I do? Call an animal shelter?” Torn by this problem, he walked aimlessly by the lake of the park. With all his mind focused on how to get rid of the dog, Danny didn’t watch his steps. Suddenly, he slipped and fell into the lake accidentally. Struggling in the icy water, he cried for help desperately, almost choking to death. Sensing the approach of death, Danny got into overwhelming panic.
    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Just then, a familiar barking was heard in the distance.
    ___________________________________________________________________________
“My hero! Thank you for saving me,” Danny said gratefully with watery eyes.

根据第一段“When my mother died a few years ago, we looked through boxes in which she had lovingly stored her children’s lives.(几年前,当我母亲去世时,我们翻看了她用爱心储存孩子们生活的盒子。)”;第二段“After my father’s death, I found many handwritten pity letters from his friends.(我父亲去世后,我发现许多他朋友的亲笔书信。)”和第三段“My kids, now in their 20s, have mostly digital keepsakes. Increasingly they rely on Facebook to store memories. Their letters from college, sent by email, are long gone. Many photos, never printed, have disappeared. I really worry that for them.(我的孩子,现在20多岁,大部分都有电子纪念品。他们越来越依赖Facebook来存储记忆。他们通过电子邮件寄来的大学来信早已不见了。许多从未印刷的照片也消失了。我真的为他们担心。)”可推知,实物不是记忆的载体了。故选C。
2.推理判断题。根据第四段“Despite the gradual disappearance of photographs, letters and other objects that are reminders of people and past experiences, their keeping is like holding on to those people and experiences. ”Digital items offer nothing of the kind.(尽管照片、信件和其他能提醒人们及过去经历的物品逐渐消失,但保留它们就像是紧紧抓住那些人和经历。而数码产品则没有这种功能。)”可知,Andrew Hoskins认为电子产品不能像具体的物体那样储存记忆,所以他反对用电子产品储存记忆。故选A。
根据倒数第二段“Mark B. McKinley explained that collecting physical memorabilia(值得纪念的事物) can serve as a means of control to bring out a comfort zone in one’s life, calming fears and easing worries.(Mark B. McKinley解释说,收集实物纪念品可以作为一种控制手段,在个人的生活中带来一个舒适区,平静恐惧和缓解担忧。)”
根据最后一段“But will his mom print out a photo of that unique collection? Will his degree in geology be memorialized on paper, or will he be given a digital diploma? And will he collect his first paycheck or will he be paid by direct deposit?(但是他的妈妈会打印出一张独一无二的照片吗?

根据文章第二段“In the past, the demand for paper has been far ahead of growth in the American economy, but the sales have slowed markedly over the past two to three years, despite the good economic conditions.”
Analysts attribute the decline to such factors as advances in digital databases and communication systems. Escaping our craving for paper, however, will be anything but an easy affair.”
根据文章第五段“To reduce paper use, some companies are working to combine digital and paper capabilities.” 故选A。
根据文章最后一段“The result is that we are becoming paperless, but we hardly notice at all. “That’s one of the greatest ironies of the information age,” Saffo says. “It’s just common sense that the more you talk to someone by phone or computer, it inevitably leads to a face-to-face meeting. The best thing for the aviation industry was the Internet”.

1.上文“We live in a remarkable time, and many of the once fatal diseases can now be cured with modern medicine and surgery. (我们生活在一个非凡的时代,许多曾经致命的疾病现在可以用现代医学和外科手术治愈。)”,G项“It is almost certain that one day a cure will be found for the rest of the diseases.(几乎可以肯定的是,总有一天会找到治疗其他疾病的方法。)”,上文提到了many of the once fatal diseases,许多曾经致命的疾病现在可以治愈,G项提及the rest of the diseases,其他的一些疾病在未来肯定也可以治愈,故上文与G项语意衔接连贯顺畅。故选G项。
2.上文“every day we witness the incredible killing of men, women and children on the roads. Man fights against the motor-car. It is a never-ending battle which man is losing.(每一天,我们都目睹了男人、女人和儿童在道路上被杀害,令人难以置信。人类与汽车搏斗。这是一场人类正在输掉的永无休止的战斗。)”,B项“Every year thousands of people are horribly killed, and we sit still and let it happen.(每年都有成千上万的人惨死,而我们却坐视不管。)”
3.D项“Someone has rightly said that when a person is sitting behind the steering wheel, his car becomes an extension of his personality.(有人说得对,当一个人坐在方向盘后面时,他的车就变成了他个性的延伸。)”,下文“There is no doubt that the motor-car often brings out a man’s very worst qualities. Usually quiet and pleasant people, when they are behind the steering wheel, will become unrecognizable. They are impolite, aggressive, self-willed like two-year-old, completely selfish. All their hidden frustrations, disappointments, and jealousy seem to be caused by driving.(毫无疑问,汽车常常使人显露出最坏的品质。平时安静愉快的人,当他们坐在方向盘后面时,就会变得无法识别。他们不礼貌,好斗,任性得像两岁的孩子,绝对地自私。他们所有隐藏的沮丧、失望和嫉妒似乎都是由开车引起的。)”,D项表明开车人的个性在他开车的方式上会有所表现,下文是对D项内容的延伸,开车过程中,开车人会呈现出最糟糕的一面,上下文语意连贯顺畅。故选D项。
4.上文“There is no doubt that the motor-car often brings out a man’s very worst qualities. Usually quiet and pleasant people, when they are behind the steering wheel, will become unrecognizable. They are impolite, aggressive, self-willed like two-year-old, completely selfish. All their hidden frustrations, disappointments, and jealousy seem to be caused by driving.(毫无疑问,汽车常常使人显露出最坏的品质。平时安静愉快的人,当他们坐在方向盘后面时,就会变得面目全非。他们不礼貌,好斗,任性得像两岁的孩子,完全自私。他们所有隐藏的沮丧、失望和嫉妒似乎都是由开车引起的。)”,C项“Surprisingly, society should smile at the driver and forgive him. (令人惊讶的是,社会应该对司机微笑并原谅他。)”,下文“It’s all for his own convenience.(这都是为了他自己的方便。)”
5.上文“Governments should develop safety codes for manufacturers.(政府应该为制造商制定安全规范)”,E项“All advertisements that emphasize power and performance should be banned.(所有强调权力和表演的广告都应该被禁止。)”,下文“These measures may sound cruel. However, if these measures result in a reduction in the loss of life every year, they should certainly not be considered serious. After all, the world belongs to humans, not cars.(这些措施听起来可能很残酷。

根据空前的as deeply or directly可知,此处考查as...as... 故填as。
prefer的名词为preference,意为“偏爱”, a prefrence for...,意为“对……的偏好”。故填preference。
故填a。
根据空前的动词decide,与后半句中的连词or,设空处应填连词whether,whether...or...“是……还是……”。故填whether。
根据句子结构和句意,hope后接宾语从句,谓语动词应为get turned into...,get为系动词, turn...into...,意为“使……变成……”,get后应用过去分词,表被动。故填turned。
    8.考查代词。句意:虽然这只是斯坦的第一本书,但我已经把他和大卫·塞达里斯、戴夫·巴里、詹姆斯·瑟伯、马克·吐温和亚伯拉罕·林肯相提并论了。根据句意,此处应用代词宾格him,作consider的宾语。故填him。
故填have recommended。
故填that。

    3. The program will last from 4: 30 pm to 5: 00 pm every day, when most students are free.
    4. Besides, an English speech competition is to be held each term.

Just then, a familiar barking was heard in the distance. In a split second, a splash of brown, out of breath, quickly jumped into the lake. It was One-Eyed! It barked, swimming toward Danny with all its might. On spotting One-Eyed, Danny seemed to see a ray of hope, attempting to move towards it instantly. Instinctively, Danny grabbed the tail of One-Eyed. Ultimately, they managed to climb ashore, exhausted. Gazing at One-Eyed in disbelief, Danny patted it tenderly in return. One-Eyed was no longer troublesome; instead, it became a “hero” in his heart.
“My hero! Thank you for saving me,” Danny said gratefully with watery eyes. “You’re my brave guardian angel!” Since that night, “One-Eyed” was nonexistent while “Hero”, as the dog was re-named, became a part of Danny’s performance. So attached were they to each other that they became genuine partners. Danny would include his pet as he engaged the audience. Hero also had its own place to lie on-the feet of Danny. While Danny played guitar, Hero would bark happily to harmonize with his owner. What a perfect match!
    ①跳进:jump into/dive into
    ②爬上岸:climb ashore/climb up the bank
    ③改名:re-name/rechristen
    ①筋疲力尽的:exhausted/dog-tired
    ②高兴地:happily/delightedly
[高分句型1]So attached were they to each other that they became genuine partners.(so位于句首引起的部分倒装句)
[高分句型2]While Danny played guitar, Hero would bark happily to harmonize with his owner.(由while引导的时间状语从句)
