Veteran Oksana Chusovitina ended her legendary career on Sunday night after competing at a record eighth Olympic Games. After failing to secure a spot in Sunday's vault final, the 46-year-old, representing Uzbekistan, waved to the small crowd inside Tokyo's Ariake Gymnastics Center, made a heart shape with her hands and briefly cried.
Born in Uzbek capital Tashkent in 1976, Chusovitina took up gymnastics at age 7, following her older brother into the sport. "My mother did not want me to do gymnastics, she was worried about me all the time. I wanted to prove to her that I was not doing it in vain, and I think I eventually succeeded in that,“ Chusovitina once said of her childhood.
She made her Olympic debut(首次亮相)at the 1992 Barcelona Games as part of the gold medal-winning Unified team, comprised of(由 组成)athletes from former Soviet states.
She then represented Uzbekistan, before being granted German citizenship in 2006. She took home a vault silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Games for Germany, but switched back to competing for Uzbekistan in 2013. Chusovitina is one of just two female gymnasts to represent three different nations at the Olympic Games.
When Chusovitina!s 3-year-old son was diagnosed with leukemia in 2002, she sold her possessions and used any prize money she earned to pay for his medical treatment. Her switch to German citizenship was motivated by the promise of a higher income and better medical care.
After her son's recovery, Chusovitina continued to compete, but this time it was her love of gymnastics that kept her going. "There is no secret. I just love gymnastics and no one ever forced me to compete. I do so with pleasure," she said.
With COVID-19 rules keeping fans out of the venue, Chusovitina admitted the atmosphere wasn't what she had hoped. "I would have loved to have spectators, she said. “Of course in terms of performance, it's better when it's just you and the apparatus(器具). But every athlete needs this attention and applause.”
“Maybe Fil skip Paris (2024 Games) , and go to Los Angeles (2028 Games) for the applause,“ she joked. At last, she told reporters, “My son is 22 years old and I want to spend time with him. I want to be a mom.”
24. What is implied about Chusovitina?
A. She once took home a gold medal in her own right.
B. She started gymnastics to meet her mother's expectations.
C. She preferred no audience when performing during the pandemic.
D. She will probably not compete in the 2028 Olympic Games.
25. Why did Chusovitina choose to compete for German?
A. Because she could secure a spot more easily in the Olympics.
B. Because it would guarantee her a lot of prize money.
C. Because it meant better medical treatment for her son.
D. Because she was granted German citizenship.
26. Which word can best describe Chusovitina as an athlete?
A. Diligent. B. Perseverant. C. Talented. D. Ambitious.
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. A Legend Athlete Fighting in the Olympics B. Life of a Legend Athlete
C. A Legend Athlete, a Smashing Mother D. A Record Breaker of the Olympics

The heat dome roasting millions of people across the Pacific Northwest, sending temperatures in usually temperate places to record-breaking triple digits, has already claimed hundreds of lives. And those are just the ones we can count so far.
Climate change has increased average temperatures by 1℃ Celsius over the past century, making heat waves like this one more frequent and intense than those from any other point in recorded history. A worldwide study published last month in Nature Climate Change found global warming responsible for 37 percent of heat-related deaths between 1991 and 2018. As temperatures tick ever higher, that figure may well rise.
The following is what happens if you're one of the next people whom extreme heat kills, according to W. Lawrence Kenney, an expert at Penn State University.
First, your brain sends a series of messages to your sweat glands(月泉体)telling them to ramp up sweat production. Then your heart starts beating faster to pump blood to the skin. That's your body attempting to make your skin hotter than the air outside, in hopes of moving heat away from you. Sometimes that alone is enough to create problems for a weak or aging heart. If your body fails to cool you down, its internal temperature might start to climb. At that temperature, the tissues in the brain become affected. Before long, you might not know where you are or what time it is. You might collapse. You may lose consciousness. While you struggle to stay awake and avoid dizzying confusion, the excessive internal heat will likely trigger an inflammatory(发炎的)response. Left untreated, what follows is organ failure that leads to all but certain death.
And that's just part of what we know about how extreme heat kills you.
“It's important for people to understand that there's still a lot we don't know about heat stroke and who!s most susceptible(易受影响的)to it," Kenney said. "That's because we can't ethically study it in humans in the laboratory. A lot of what we know comes from studies on animal models, like mice and rats, or from body examinations of people who have died of heat stroke.”
28. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A. Rise in temperature is positively related to heat-related deaths.
B. Heat waves are weaker and can be seen less frequently nowadays.
C. Climate change has mainly triggered temperature decrease over the past century.
D. Global warming contribute to most deaths related to heat between 1991 and 2018.
29. What will happen to the person killed by extreme heat?
A. His heart will receive messages from the brain to pump blood.
B. His body will turn cooler due to the quick response of the skin.
C. He will have skin problems for weak or aging tissues.
D. He will suffer from confusion, faint or even break down.
30. Which of the following words can replace "ramp” in Paragraph 4?
A. take B. speed C. turn D. build
31. By quoting Kenney's words, the writer wants to .
A. reveal how studies on animal models are carried out in the laboratory
B. explain why humans cannot be used for experiments to study heat stroke
C. illustrate many factors have influenced heat stroke and the deaths
D. prove people know little about heat stroke and its contributing factor
D
Health chiefs are to use artificial intelligence to screen and treat people at risk of hepatitis C(丙型肝炎)under plans to wipe out the life-threatening disease by 2030.
The NHS scheme, due to start within weeks in England, aims to identify thousands of patients unaware that they have the virus so that treatment can be given before it is too late. Staff will use AI to comb through patient health records and look for significant risk factors, such as historical blood transfusions or an HIV diagnosis.
Anyone identified by the AI software will be invited for a consultation by their GP and, if necessary, will undergo further screening for hepatitis C. Patients who test positive for the virus—which can be caught from contact with the blood of an infected person, such as by sharing a needle—will be offered antiviral medicines. Professor Graham Foster, chairman for NHS England's hepatitis C elimination programmes, described the scheme as “a significant step forward^ in the fight to eliminate the virus.
“Hepatitis C can be a fatal disease which affects tens of thousands across the country but with unlimited access to NHS treatments, innovative patient finding initiatives such as this one. . . we will continue to boost the life chances of thousands of patients by catching the virus even earlier,“ Foster said in an interview. Hepatitis C deaths fell by 35 percent in the five years to 2020, from 482 to 314, according to the latest data from the UK Health Security Agency. New cases also fell from 129,000 in 2015 to 81,000 in 2020. The fall in deaths was largely thanks to earlier detection of the virus and improved access to treatments.
Rachel Halford, chief executive of the Hepatitis C Trust, said: "There has been brilliant work to expand testing in a wide range of settings in recent years but we have not yet seen the advances we need to see in primary care. The rollout of this screening programme is therefore another crucial step towards achieving elimination.”
32. What is the purpose of the NHS scheme?
A. To test the virus and cure patients with hepatitis C.
B. To detect patients with hepatitis C for early treatment.
C. To effectively wipe out the life-threatening disease.
D. To boost the life chances of patients by eliminating the virus.
33. Who is most likely to be infected with hepatitis C?
A. A man who shakes hands with an infected stranger.
B. A boy who has breakfast with his infected friends.
C. A woman who works with hepatitis C patients every day.
D. A girl who happens to transfuse blood donated by infected patients.
34. What's Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The danger of hepatitis B. The advancement of NHS treatments.
C. The effects of the programme. D. The urgency of curing the disease.
35. Where is the text probably taken from?
A. A biology textbook. B. A research paper.
C. A health magazine. D. A medical book.

In the sport of track and field, athletes compete not only with one another but against themselves, and with each race they strive to achieve a new personal best.
For Brandon Schutt running in what would likely be his final cross-country match before graduating high school, his personal best turned out not to be about marking the fastest time but displaying the biggest heart.
Although it was difficult for him to advance to upcoming state meet last Thursday, if his time was good enough that day, he still had the potential to qualify for the match.
After running for one mile, however, Schutt realized he wasn't going to be able to keep up the fast speed. Rather than risk injury, he slowed to a necessary pace that would allow him to enter the state meet.
Meanwhile, Omaha Burke High School sophomore (二 年级 学生)Blake Cerveny was running a very different kind of race. Aiming to beat his own personal record, after a fast start, he continued to push himself hard. With less than 400 meters to go, Cerveny's legs cramped up(抽筋)and failed him. But his will did not. Determined to finish, Cerveny rose from the ground and continued on, only to fall again after another 150 meters. . . and again, he got up and started running. This time he'd made it only 25 meters more before going down. But he wasn't done yet.
Concerned, his dad and his coach asked Cerveny if he wanted to stop. He didn't. With a lot of effort, the young runner pulled himself up and with an unsteady gait (步伐),moved forward for one final push. It wasn't enough. A less 100 meters from the finish line, he lay curled on the ground and his legs had simply given out.
Before Cerveny!s dad could reach his son, another runner—Brandon Schutt—was at his side to offer a helping hand.
注意:
1..续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
However, his first attempt to get Cerveny up failed.
