Every day when Glen Oliver orders his morning coffee at the drive-through window of a local cafe, he insists on paying for the order of the person behind him. He also asks the restaurant workers to tell the customer to have a great day, in case they’re not already having one.
Oliver has never made a big deal out of his own generous actions until a letter was published by a news website in November. He found out that he had not just bought someone his breakfast —he had saved a life.
According to the website, someone had written a letter stating that on July 18th, he was planning on committing suicide. The writer said that while he was at the drive-through window, he was planning on going home, writing a note and ending his life. When he went to pay for his coffee and muffin, however, the cashier told him that the man in the SUV in front of him had picked up the tab and told him to have a great day.
“I wondered why someone would buy coffee for a stranger for no reason,” said the writer. “Why me? Why today? If I were a religious man, I would take this as a sign. This random act of kindness was directed at me on this day for a purpose.”
When the writer arrived home, he couldn’t restrain his tears and started to think about the simple good deed that had affected him so deeply. “I decided at that moment to change my plans for the day and do something nice for someone. I ended up helping a neighbor take groceries out of her car and into the house.”
The writer says that in the months following that fateful event, he does at least one kind thing for others every day. “To the nice man in the SUV, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Please know your kind gesture has truly saved a life,” he said. “On July 18, 2017, I had the greatest day.”

Dozens of dolphins(海豚) swam out of the polluted waters of Haifa Harbor on Tuesday. This was the first time that dolphins had visited this crowded Mediterranean Port, and researchers were surprised by the unexpected event.
Between 40 and 50 of the dolphins appeared in the busy port on Tuesday morning, obviously drawn by the fish-rich waters of Haifa Bay.
However, the bay is also full of harmful chemicals. Aviad Sheinin, professor of Haifa University’s Maritime Studies Department, said he didn’t think the dolphins were harmed by the pollution, but that he hoped they would swim back to the sea soon. “It seems that they are quite relaxed. They don’t seem to be stressed, ”he said.
Haifa Bay is lined by chemical companies that have been pouring poisonous waste into the water for decades. While pollution levels have dropped in recent years, the water is still considered a health hazard(隐患).
“There are lots of fishes in Haifa Port. Unfortunately,we couldn’t tell the dolphins that the fish are not healthy, and I don’t know what the result will be,” he told Israel Army Radio.
Hundreds of Haifa residents gathered around Haifa Bay to see the interesting sight, and researchers said this provided a rare chance to film and study the rough-toothed dolphins. In addition to the dozens of dolphins which swam into the port on Tuesday, a similar number stayed outside the breakwater (防波堤). Later Tuesday the dolphins left the port but remained near the entrance and Israel’s coastguard was patrolling (巡逻) the area to try to make sure the dolphins didn’t re-enter the poisonous waters.
Relatively little is known about rough-toothed dolphins, which are usually found in deep and warm tropical waters.
- Which of the following reason makes Haifa Bay full of harmful chemicals?
A. Unhealthy fish. B. Ships.
C. Chemical companies. D. Residents living nearby.
29. What does Aviad Sheinin’s words suggest?
A. He is curious about the dolphins.
B. The dolphins might affect the existence of fish in Haifa port.
C. He will do research on the dolphins.
D. He is uncertain about what will happen to the dolphins.
30. What is the purpose of Israel’s coastguard deed?
A. Protect the dolphins from the polluted waters.
B. Avoid traffic jam.
C. Deal with the harmful waters.
D. Prevent people killing dolphins.
31. What does this passage mainly tell us?
A. Dolphins are well protected in Israel.
B. Haifa Bay is full of harmful chemicals.
C. Dolphins made a surprise visit to the polluted harbor.
D. People love dolphins.

Facial recognition is becoming increasingly common in China, where it has been installed at ATM machines and KFC restaurants. Now the technology has arrived in university classrooms to track student attendance.
Shen Hao, a professor with Communication University of China, is using facial recognition in his six courses to keep track of the attendance of more than 300 students.
Before every class, Shen activates a new attendance system installed on his tablet computer. Students stand in front of the screen one by one to have their photos taken and matched with those in the school’s database.
The system is based on facial recognition technology from Chinese Internet giant Baidu’s open AI platform. Currently, the platform has offered more than 80 different technological services to the public, helping program developers like Shen to develop their own applications.
“The traditional way of tracking attendance is through a roll call. The new system saves time and reduces the workload of teachers,” said Shen.
Students have joked that facial recognition is harsh as it doesn’t allow for skipping classes. “But they support the technology to enter colleges,” said Cui Yuqin, a student majoring in data journalism with the university.
China’s Forward-looking Industry Institute said that the facial recognition market in China surpassed 1 billion yuan (about 150 million U.S. dollars) in 2016 and is expected to hit 5.1 billion yuan by 2021.
Facial recognition technology has already been put to creative use. Beijing’s Temple of Heaven has used it in toilets to deter toilet paper theft. In east China’s Jinan, traffic police installed facial scanners at intersections to catch and shame jaywalkers, and a Beijing university has used the technology to guard its dorms.
- What are the advantages of using facial recognition in college courses?
a. It makes it difficult for students to skip classes.
b. It helps students to attend classes easily.
c. It helps save time in classes.
d. It can make teachers match students’ names with their faces easily.
e. It reduces teachers’ amount of work.
A. Abc B. ace C. bcd D. bce
33. What does the underlined word “harsh” in Paragraph 6 probably mean?
A. Wonderful. B. Easy. C. Harmful. D. Severe.
34. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Facial recognition encourages the development of modern technology.
B. Chinese university uses facial recognition to track student attendance.
C. Baidu’s open AI platform has offered facial recognition technology.
D. Facial recognition technology has many advantages over traditional services.
35. Where can this passage most probably be found?

How to Pick a Good Book
It’s not news that we spend more time texting and surfing online than ever. But a recent study shows that more teenagers are reading good old-fashioned and ink-on-paper books. Reading is a good way to widen your knowledge and learn about yourself. You probably know how to find the best application programs for your phone. 36
Start with your interests
Reading on your own isn’t like reading for school. 37 It could be ancient martial arts, computers, or fashion design. If you can name the subject, you can find books about it.
Find your “type”
38 Books of fiction, like novels or short-story collections, can transport you to another world or help you to imagine something beyond your own experience. Not all fiction is the same. Try some different types of fiction and see which one you prefer. Non-fiction books give you the “who”, “what”, “when” and “why” of something. They tell stories using facts, but that doesn’t mean they are dull.
Read the “blurb(简介)”
The reviews and quotes on the back and inside covers of many books are known as “blurbs”. These comments not only give you an idea of what the book is about, but also help you to pick out future books. If you find a book you really like, take a minute to read the blurb and see which authors praised the book. 39
40
Your local library can provide you with a lot of great books. Explain your interests and mention any writer you like, and the librarian can point you towards books that you will like. Then you can enjoy what you’re reading in a quiet place.
A. Often, they will have similar styles, and you might find you like books by those authors, too.
B. You can pick something that suits your interests.
C. Read in a quiet place.
D. Do you prefer fiction or non-fiction?
E. Ask an expert.
F. It is necessary to work out what the book is mainly about before reading.
G. But do you know how to pick a book that you will really like?
