The Language Center's first Trivia Night tested students' knowledge on different languages and their histories last Friday at Douglass Commons.
“We have decided to conduct this event when the weather is bad so that students who have nowhere to go and stay on campus can come and find a comfortable shelter during a cold winter day," Language Center Director, Teresa Valdez said. According to Valdez , the idea for Trivia Night came a year ago from a junior and team-member called Elizabeth de Los Reyes. The event engaged students' interest in languages and showed the high-quality services that the Language Center provides.
Participants competed in small groups that each represented a different language and country. There were five teams in total: Russia, China, Japan, Spain and France. The competition consisted of four rounds with each round consisting of three questions relating to the following topics: literature, language, geography, culture and history.
After a few warm-up questions about how people greet each other in different languages, what continent Turkey is found in, and who is the first man to fly to the moon, the questions became increasingly difficult. Each round offered an increasing amount of points a team could receive. The final question was worth 20 points. If a team did not answer it correctly, the points were taken from the total.
In the meantime, students enjoyed pizza, snacks, and drinks while sharing their linguistic (语言的)interest. Most of the participants knew two or three languages. Others knew more, such as first-year Bartek Jezierski from Poland, who can speak English, Polish, German, Spanish, and Russian.
The winners from first to third place were France, Japan and Russia respectively. All five teams were given some prizes—a blue shopping bag, a cup and stuffed toys. However,
students believed the most important prize of the evening was the process of the competition—— how students from diverse backgrounds and cultures were able to participate in a friendly competition, and shared their mutual (相互的)love of languages.
4. Which of the following is the purpose of Trivia Night?
A.To attract students to learn languages.
B.To help the students suffering from coldness.
C. To select the best students for the Language Center.
D. To collect opinions from the students on its services.
5. How many questions were there in the competition in total?
A.Three. B. Four. C. Twelve. D. Twenty.
6. How is the atmosphere of the competition?
A. Quiet. B. Depressing. C. Romantic. D. Relaxing.
7. What is the most valuable to the students in the competition?
A. Some snacks and drinks.
B. The course of the competition.
C. Various prizes for winners.
D. The services provided by the Language Center.
C
The Trailer(预告片) for Mulan , a Disney movie based on its previous animation ((动画片)about the ancient Chinese legend, has been released and Chinese viewers have been quick to criticize it.
There are two main points that Chinese audiences are unhappy with. First, in the trailer there are shots of Fujian, which is about 3,000 kilometers away from historical home of Mulan in history. Second, the heroine Mulan wears heavy makeup that is appealing to Westerners' eyes, not Chinese eyes.
Perhaps the criticism is unfair as Disney has designed the movie to please Western audiences, who care more about the story than the historical facts. That's why Chinese audiences should not expect the film to have accurate Chinese elements even though the story is Chinese and almost all the leading actors are Chinese or at least ethnic Chinese. It shows Chinese elements through the eyes of Westerners.
Yet the differences cannot hide the points where the Chinese and Western elements and values can find common ground. A good example being the part in the trailer where the matchmaker describes the qualities that make for a good wife, namely a woman being “quiet, composed, graceful, disciplined". This is said with Mulan appearing in two images. One has her dressing as a woman, the other with her practicing sword. Obviously Disney described Mulan as a warrior, an independent female who can save herself instead of waiting for someone to save her.
That's a good point where Chinese and Western values are similar because gender equality
and female independence are now valued in both cultures. It will strike a chord(弦)with both Chinese and Western audiences.
But whatever styles her clothes and makeup follow, Mulan is a Chinese legendary heroine and she embodies(表现)the virtues of Chinese women. Disney's Mulan should also prompt the Chinese movie industry to make better use of Chinese stories. Chinese scriptwriters and directors can well tell stories about Chinese ancient heroes to the world, instead of waiting for Disney or Hollywood to tell them. Good stories move the audiences of the whole world because their hearts are interconnected.
8. Which of the following makes Chinese audiences unhappy with the Disney movie?
A. It is an animation.
B. There are shots of Fujian in it.
C. Chinese viewers are ill-tempered.
D. It is based on an ancient Chinese legend.
9. What has Disney designed the movie to do?
A. Spread Chinese culture.
B. Promote Western culture.
C. Please Western audiences.
D. Shows Western elements through the eyes of Chinese.
10. What does the underlined word “prompt" in Paragraph 6 mean?
A. destroy B. encourage C. persuade D. try
11. What!s the author!s attitude towards the movie?
A. Critical. B. Doubtful.
C. Unconcerned. D. Objective.
D
On Friday, domestic telecommunication giant Huawei launched its first operating system, Hongmeng, or Harmony.
For Huawei, Friday was a day to celebrate. After years of tireless research and development, the joint achievement of programmers, product managers, testing engineers and other staff was finally revealed to the public.
Of course, the launch is only the first step for the new OS. Huawei said the OS is not for smartphones yet and its device is yet to come. Actually, even if Huawei, an expert company on smartphones, makes an OS for smartphones later, it faces fierce competition from Apple and Google, the two giants of the market.
Ren Zhengfei, head of Huawei, praised Apple's iOS and Google's Android in recent interviews. Yet Huawei’s development of its own OS demonstrates its technological prowess and the huge inputs it makes in research and development.
Now Huawei has its own OS, it can mitigate the impact of the United States’ restrictions on Huawei using Google's Android operating system in its smartphones by building its own
platform and establishing its own rules of the games. For China as a nation, owning core technologies means it can confidently participate in the global technological competition, and live without fear of being sanctioned(制裁)by the US.
Hongmeng was born at a time when Huawei faces a crisis because even today the company still faces sanctions from the US government. However, that's not necessarily a bad thing because the external pressure has helped the Chinese people recognize the essence of international technological competition and give stronger support to Huawei.
That's why Hongmeng was so warmly received by Chinese consumers as soon as it was revealed, because it is significant beyond being just the first Chinese OS. It symbolizes the Chinese nation fighting amid difficulties.
Come on, Hongmeng, do your best!
12. What is Hongmeng?
A.A robot. B. A computer.
C. A smartphone. D. A operating system.
13. What can we learn from the text?
A. Hongmeng is just for smartphones.
B. Hongmeng was born at a time when Huawei solves no crisis.
C. Hongmeng symbolizes the Chinese nation fighting amid difficulties.
D. All Chinese people recognize the essence of international technological competition.
14. What is the attitude of Chinese consumers to Hongmeng?
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Unclear. D. Prejudiced.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Best Operating System B. Huawei’s Own Operating System
C. The Important of Operating System D. How To Face Fierce Competition
