Dear Linda,
I’m sorry to learn that you are having trouble in adapting to new study environment. To reduce your anxiety and homesickness, I have some suggestions for you.
First of all, you’d better try to change some of your habits so that you can get used to the new environment as soon as possible. Besides, make more new friends and communicate more with them, which can make you feel less lonely and homesick. In addition, taking part in some social activities will help you learn more about the local customs and cultures and make you more relaxed.
I hope my advice will be useful.
Yours
Li Hua

Text1
W: Are you ready to order now, Sir?
M: Yes. I’ll have tomato soup, beef, potatoes, and peas.
Text 2
W: Are you happy now that the exam is over?
M: Happy? You’ve got to see my grade before you say that.
Text 3
M: Sorry. I had to walk to work this morning.
W: How long does it take you?
M: About three quarters of an hour.
Text 4
W: What are you going to do tonight? How about going to the movies? There’s one that starts at 7:00 p. m.
M: Good. I’m going to play tennis this afternoon but I’ll be home by 4:00 p. m. Then we can go out for a big dinner before seeing the movie.
Text 5
M: Why are you looking me up and down?
W: What a strange suit you’re wearing! Your jacket doesn’t match your trousers.
M: I know. I got dressed in the dark, and I didn’t realize my mistake until I got to the office.
Text 6
M: Hello, Julie. Have you been to the new sports center yet?
W: Not yet, Peter. Is it good?
M: Yes, it’s great. You can do a lot of sports. I played table tennis last Thursday and watched the basketball match there, too.
W: What about swimming?
M: There is a very good swimming pool there, too. Do you want to go with me next week?
W: Sure. Any day except Wednesday.
M: Well. Why don’t we go on Friday? Then we can stay late.
W: OK. Let’s meet after school.
Text 7
W: Hello!
M: Hello, Lucy. This is Tom. Look, could you do me a favor? I’ve tried to phone my wife six times and I can’t get through. The line is busy all the time. Could you possibly go next door and give her a message?
W: Sure! What do you want to tell Susan?
M: Could you just say I’ve run into an old friend and I’m staying with him. I’m not at the hotel and I’ll give her a ring later.
W: Sure, I’ll go right now.
M: Thanks a lot, Lucy.
W: OK. Bye!
Text 8
W: Hi, Mr. Smith. May I ask you a question?
M: Of course. What can I do for you?
W: I was wondering about our magazines. I know we have to order them in advance but I don’t know when the deadline is, how much they cost, or when to pick them up.
M: I can give you all that information. You can pre-order your magazine, or you can just buy one when they come out. The pre-order deadline is in a week, and you just have to drop off your order form and check here. The magazine is $ 50. They’ll be out in 2 months, and you can pick yours up right here.
W: So, I still have some time to decide whether or not to pre-order, right?
M: Absolutely. But if you know you definitely want a magazine, I would recommend pre-ordering. That way, everything will be ready ahead of time.
Text 9
M: Hi, Lisa, what are you doing?
W: Watching a Japanese film. I’m going to spend all next year in Japan, and I think I should find out more about its culture.
M: You mean you have been accepted into the program?
W: I sure have.
M: That’s wonderful. You must be excited.
W: Excited and nervous. You know I have to work on some basic conversation skills.
M: How much Japanese can you understand?
W: Only a little now. But I’m going to take a special language class next month.
M: I wish I were as clever as you are at foreign languages. I would love to study abroad.
W: Then why don’t you? The school has a lot of programs that don’t require the knowledge of a foreign language. You just have to be the kind of person who is quick to learn new things and can get used to a new environment fast.
M: I thought all programs required one to know a foreign language. Thank you for letting me know this.
Text10
W: There is a new reason to be extra careful over the holidays, and the police are warning drivers about a new law that was passed last month. Using a cell phone while driving is now illegal, and with it will come heavy fines. We can all remember last year, when a man suffered a severe head injury when a green Toyota struck him. And just three months ago, a schoolteacher walking home from work was hit, breaking both of her legs. Most recently, a dog was killed at the crossing of 5th and Broadway from careless driving. All incidents involved cell phones, and all have made people pay attention to this troublesome trend. You will be ticketed right away if you are caught using cell phones while driving. So, how will the police accomplish this? Well, unlike a traditional road block, officers will be standing at crossings, monitoring drivers as they come to a stop. Previously, the police asked other people to call in and report other drivers, but it’s not clear how effective that was. So, be careful out there. Not just for your own safety, but for others as well.
