Pasta and pizza were on everyone’s lunch menu in my native land of Italy. Everyone who had such a lunch was fair-skinned and spoke Italian. A few years later, as I stood in the lunch line with my kindergarten class in a school in Brooklyn, I realized things were no longer that simple. My classmates ranged from those kids with pale skin and large blue eyes to those with rich brown skin and dark hair. The food choices were almost as diverse as the students. In front of me was an array of foods I couldn’t even name in my native language. Fearing that I would pick out something awful, I desperately tried to ask the boy ahead of me for a recommendation. Unfortunately, between us stood the barrier of language.
Although my kindergarten experience feels like a century ago, the lessons I learned will stick in my mind forever. For the past three summers, I have worked in a government agency in New York. For many of us, there’s nothing better than burying our head in a good book. Whether it’s a crime story or a biography of someone’s amazing life, it’s good to read a book to switch off from the distractions of everyday life and help us relax. Maybe that’s why some of them are actually described as a therapy to sickness.
It may seem obvious that reading is good for us. It can be educational, and, as some say, it can ‘broaden the mind’. A good novel can make us happy or sad, or make us cry as we sympathize with characters. The power of books was recognized a few years ago by the British charity Reading Agency, who published a list of books that doctors could offer to patients, concerning topics from depression to chronic（慢性的)pain. It called this “bibliotherapy” and it’s become so successful that it’s about to be extended to children as well.
Professor Philip Davis studies the effects of literature and is author of a book called Reading for Life. He studied people in reading groups and found that it’s reading literature — written works thought to have artistic value, that has the best effect. “When reading something for pleasure, the brain begins to work from different parts, from a different hemisphere and it gets excited, it gets pre-emotional — and you can see the brain coming to life.” he said.
Of course, it’s easy in our smartphone generation to desert a good book and play with our phones instead. But opening up a paperback could be a simple way to help boost or maintain our mental health. It’s thought they can help you set targets and find focus. And they may allow you to see that awkward situation you’ve been anxious about for weeks from someone else’s perspective.
If you’re not a keen reader it can be hard to know where to begin. If the Reading Agency book list doesn’t appeal, you could read book reviews, visit a library or bookshop or ask a friend. Once you’ve found the right text, you’ll be attracted! And if you still love your technology, you could always use an e-reader.

The current generation is not like any other generation I have seen in history. Due to the rise in technology the world is evolving fast and changing the way most of us do things. Today’s young generation is so used to the technology which they learn very quickly. It could be considered as a benediction, but there are times when it is not appropriate.
In my generation, we met friends face to face to have real conversations rather than texting each other all the time. We walked everywhere, to the store or up the stairs instead of climbing into our car or on a motored skateboard each time we had to go two or three blocks away.
Most of the new generation expects things to be done for them. If something requires some extra effort or focus, they are easily discouraged. But if we want to reach success in this day and age, it is expected of us to work to achieve our dreams. The old generation knows that the world does not owe them squat. It understands that no one else than them can do it and that is their responsibility to make something of themselves.
Nowadays, there is no longer a sense of honor, because most people hide behind a computer screen. When you handle issues or hate for no reason over social media, it just proves that you are a weak person. I just put an advertisement in one of my groups for teaching Kung Fu, and one hater wrote “Kung Fu clown.” And this is for no reason as I have never seen or met the guy before.
The new generation relies too much on social media for their lives and doing things. It is okay to use it but not to abuse it. My final word is that each generation has its own advantages and downsides, but what matters is that each generation, old or new, has to give lessons which are valuable for future generations.

Children are better prepared for school and tend to get better grades later on if their parents make a habit of reading to them from a young age. One study from Harvard University found that the number of books in the home was the single biggest factor related to success in school, more than the education or income of the parents! Reading brings knowledge, and it can be an important part of relaxing at bedtime. But most importantly, it gives parents an opportunity to communicate with their children. Many parents buy books for their kids long before they can talk. And some even start reading to their children before they are born. It’s never too early to start reading to your children. Trips to the library or the bookstore can be fun activities for young families to do together.
