Have you ever used a needle(针)and thread(线)to sew(缝纫)? What did you think of it?
When I was a little boy, my mom, grandmother and I drove to my grandmother’s sister’s house in the next town. It was a warm summer afternoon, I went outside to play in the yard while they all sat around the kitchen table to talk.
After an hour of playing by myself, I got bored and walked inside to see what they were doing. On the kitchen table was a large homemade bedclothes that was still being sewn together. Pieces of colorful cloth were everywhere. I sat in a chair and watched as my great aunt sewed a little piece of cloth onto the bedclothes. I looked over at one side of it and saw a piece of thread sticking out. Without thinking, I reached over to pull it.
“No!” It was my grandmother’s voice. I jumped back. That was the first time I can ever remember her yelling at me. Seeing the frightened look on my face, she smiled and showed me why she had yelled. That single piece of thread wove(穿行)in and out of the different pieces of cloth.
Like a twisting road, it made its way from one end of the bedclothes to the other. If I pulled on it, I would have pulled the bedclothes apart and destroyed hours of work.
As I look back on that moment today, I can see that each of our lives is a lot like that thread in the bedclothes. We are each a single piece of thread, but the other threads around us help hold everything together. That’s our purpose—help the people around us.
26. What was the writer doing while others were talking in the kitchen?
A. Watching them talking. B. Playing in the yard.
C. Sitting in a chair. D. Pulling the thread.
27. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “yelling”?

C. Crying excitedly. D. Shouting loudly.
28. How did the writer feel after his grandma yelled at him?
A. Scared B. Excited C. Shocked D. Angry
29. What does the writer want to tell us?
A. Finding out what your purpose is.
B. Loving the people around us.
C. Supporting the people around us.
D. Learning to work without other people.

It’s not always enjoyable for children to eat vegetables. But what if a garden is built in the school? New research suggests that a gardening program in schools can increase children’s vegetable intake(摄入量).
How the Study Was Carried Out
The study was carried out in eight schools. Each school was in the gardening program for one school year. Every child in grades 3-5 received a total of eighteen 60-minute lessons across the school year. In the program, each school built a garden, where children learned to grow their own fresh produce, like fruit and vegetables.
The Benefits Children Could Get
The study found that vegetable intake increased greatly across the year as the children grew their own fruit and vegetables. Related studies show that increased vegetable intake can improve health and cut the risk of chronic(慢性)diseases. There are not only benefits to health, children may also make mealtimes much easier. “Children who are often exposed(接触)to a variety of vegetables are more likely to try new foods,” explains Dr. Kerry Jones. For children, growing their own food is a powerful tool to increase their intake of intake of the food.
___▲___
Any opportunity to expose children to more vegetables is meaningful. “If children are learning about vegetables at school, it’s important to encourage this interest.” says Jones. Parents can listen to their children about what they have learned and read the handouts they bring home from school. Parents and children can also read books together. Younger children can enjoy reading stories about vegetables with parents who offer useful message. Older children may enjoy searching through cook books with parents to find new dinner ideas to cook vegetables in a tasty way. In addition, a small planter box in a sunny part at home can encourage children to understand more about where their food comes from.
Teaching children to grow their own produce is a great way to increase their preference for the produce. If children are taught to enjoy vegetables early in life, they will probably continue eating vegetables in the long term.

C. Ways to Expose Children to Vegetables at Home.
D. Suggestions That Children Could Get from Parents.
32. What can we learn from the program?
A. Parents’ support might improve children’s reading.
B. School program could develop children’s creativity.
C. Doing studies can prepare students for future learning.
D. Hands-on experience may influence children’s preference.
33. What’s the main idea of this passage?

Imagine this: you and your friend are on a video call. He or she picks up a book, and you feel like you’re holding the book as well. You can shake hands or give your friends a high five, even though you’re apart.
A pair of special gloves might make this a reality. Researchers at the University of New South Wales, Australia, have made gloves that can recreate the sense of touch. They call this haptic device(触觉装置)a “soft skin stretch device (SSD)”.
The SSD works like this: One user’s gloves create 3D force signals when they touch something. The signals are sent to the other users’ gloves which vibrate(震动)to create the same vibration that the first user is experiencing. This allows the second user to experience the same sense of touch. “It is like wearing a second skin,” said Thanh Nho Do, one of the researchers who created the gloves.
Now haptic technology is already being used in life. It is used in medical practice. Two doctors in separate places could work together during an operation — one touched the patient’s body with the SSD while the other doctor feels the same sensation and completes the actual operation.
It is also used in military training. Imagine a soldier who stays at home can also finish the training — One soldier can hold a gun with SSD while the other soldier feels the same sense of touch and then finished the real training.
“However, it is difficult to recreate the sense of touch in some environments. We still have a long way to go in the future.” said by Mai Thanh Thai, lead researcher of the SSD project.
34. According to the passage, we can infer that haptic technology is ______.
A. already being widely used
B. only used by Australians
C. too expensive to be used
D. still in need of improvement
35. Which of the following statement is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A. Both you and your friend should wear gloves when using the SSD.
B. With SSD, patients can have the operation without doctors.
C. SSD works by sending vibration from one user’s gloves to the others.
D. Haptic technology can also be used in military exercise.
36. The structure of the passage may be ______.
A. ①/②③④/⑤⑥ B. ①②/③④⑤/⑥
C. ①/②③/④⑤/⑥ D. ①②/③④/⑤⑥
37. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. SSD — A Helper in Life
B. SSD — A Trainer in the Army
C. SSD — Making Your Dreams Realized
D. SSD — Making Your Sense of Touch Shared
(D)
There are two ways of driving in the world: if the driver’s seat is on the left and cars travel on the right side of the road, it is called “left-hand driving”, as it is in China, while the other way of driving is called “right-hand driving”, as it is in Britain. Nowadays, around 65% of the world’s population drives on the right of the road, while the rest is used to driving on the left.
Though no one knows the exact reasons, it seems likely that people in ancient times travelled on the left. Roman coins show pictures of horsemen passing on each other’s right. And right-hand people generally got on a horse from the animal’s left. Obviously, it’s safer to do this at the left side of the road, and it makes sense for the horse to be ridden on the left.
A change happened in the late 1700s. When Napoleon conquered nations, he forced them to travel on the right side of the road, which spread left-hand driving throughout Europe. However, Britain still stuck with the right-hand driving rule and countries which were part of the British Empire were made to follow. This is why India, Australia and the former British colonies(前英国殖民地)in Africa continue to drive on the left. One exception is Egypt, as that country was defeated by Napoleon before becoming part of the British Empire.
Some countries changed sides until modern times. Sweden only moved to driving on the right in 1967 and Iceland changed the following year. Ghana changed sides in 1974. On September 7, 2009, Samoa became the third country ever to change from left-to-right-hand driving for the reason that it made it easier to buy cheap cars from right-hand driving Japan, Australia and New Zealand.
So if you want to travel to another country or go on business, make sure you know whether it is left-or-right-hand driving to avoid unnecessary troubles.
38. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Sweden changed to drive on the right in 1974.
B. People drive on the left side of the road in Egypt.
C. People have known the exact reasons for driving on the left.
D. Napoleon helped with the spread of lefthand driving.
39. In modern times, countries follow the same driving way except ______.
A. Australia B. Egypt C. Sweden D. China
40. What is the writer’s purpose for writing this passage?
A. To explain the advantages of the two ways of driving.
B. To compare the differences of the two ways of driving.
C. To complain about the change of the two ways of driving.
D. To introduce the development of the two ways of driving.
