A.
How do you like your school? Have you ever written to your headmaster to talk about your idea? Here are some letters written by students from different schools.
Luke, 14, from Jiangsu
I will give some suggestions about our school uniform. In our school, we students have to wear uniform every day. But the yellow and green sports clothes look really dark and old. It can't stand for( 代 表 ) young and lively spirit. We can add some red or orange colors and make a new type of uniform. I hope our headmaster will think about it.
Danny, 14, from Zhejiang
I have two suggestions for my headmaster. First of all, I think we should have more hobby classes in science, such as plane model making class and computer programming class. It is really boring to study basic subjects all the time. And second, I hope we can have more PE lessons or more time for physical exercise. Lots of students now don't have a strong enough body.
Sam, 15, from Shanxi
I'd like to say thank you to my headmaster. About one week ago, I got a bad cold after playing basketball. Our headmaster came to me after he knew about it. He took care of me until my parents came. I really want to thank him for that.
Helen, 14, from Shandong
In the letter I wrote, I want to talk about the possibility of personal( 个 性 化 的 ) classes. Now many middle schools are trying the "personal class" system. Students don't have regular classes. They can choose lessons they want to take. I think it is more effective. And it is also good for exercise. We don't have to stay in one classroom all the time.
52. The reasons why Danny gives two suggestions are that .
A. students have too few classes every day and they love sports
B. studying basic subjects only is boring and students are too weak
C. hobby classes are interesting and students have no PE lessons at all
D. students don't like the basic subjects and they want to have more sports lessons
53. All the students except(除了) write to the headmaster to complain(抱怨) about something.
A. Luke B. Danny C. Sam D. Helen
55. According to the passage, which of the following is true?
A. Sam wants to say some bad words about his classmates.
B. Helen thinks personal classes will help students learn better.
C. Luke agrees that Sam should say "thank you" to his headmaster
D. Danny doesn't like wearing school uniform.

There are many differences between British English and American English. I once taught a course about the differences between the two. We speak English on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean but we have many differences in our common language. We have examples of the same words having very different meanings, differing spellings of the same words as well as completely different words for the same things. Here are some examples.
A cookie in the US is called a biscuit in the UK. A biscuit in the US is a small cake in the UK. Crisps in the UK, are known as chips, but we British people eat a plate of chips that you call fries in the US. In the UK, a pie can be made from either meat or fruit, while in the US pies are usually made from fruit; pot pies are made from meat. Most things are measured in grams and kilograms in the US, not pounds and ounces.
One very obvious( 明 显 的 ) difference is the side of the road we each choose to drive on. Petrol in the UK is gas in the US. The place where we fill up our cars, in the UK, is a garage; while in the US, it's a gas station. The term garage also used as a place to store your car next to or close by your house. In the UK we call a lorry what is known as a truck in the US.
An elevator in the US is called a lift here, and the first floor in the USA, is called the ground floor here, so many visitors get off on the wrong floor in British hotels.
I could continue with this. There are many more examples of differences within our one shared language. With so many differences, no wonder it's hard to understand each other well.
54. The passage is mainly about the differences between British English and American English in .
A. vocabulary B. grammar C. sound D. spelling
55. We can infer from the passage that the writer may be .
A. A driver from the US B. a cook from the US
C. a teacher from the UK D. a gas station worker from the UK
56. The writer thinks that .
A. language differences don't affect understanding
B. the same words in the two different types of English may have different spellings
C. there will be fewer differences between American and British English in the future
D. it is impossible that some Americans get off on the wrong floor in British hotels
57. What can we learn from the passage?
A. "Elevator" is commonly used in the UK.
B. Pies mean the same thing in the UK and the US.
C. In the UK, things are measured in pounds and ounces
D. British and American people drive on the same side of the road.

Learning a foreign language well is never an easy thing. It is much more difficult when the learner is a shy person. Being shy keeps many Chinese people from getting to know Westerners. You may feel nervous about making language mistakes in front of a native English speaker.
But remember, Westerners living in Asia know how it feels when trying to talk with others in a foreign language. They make many mistakes when speaking Chinese!
So don't worry about that you cannot speak perfect English. The important thing is just be brave enough to open your mouth. Start talking, and make some foreign friends!
Many Westerners value( 注意)their privacy( 隐私). Don't be surprised if your new friend doesn't include you in everything he does. This may seem strange to Chinese who worry about that their friends will feel lonely.
Chinese people often want their good friends to give advice and take care of them in many ways. If you expect this kind of care from Westerners, you may be disappointed(失望的). Why? Because most Westerners value independence( 独 立 ). They feel unhappy if others think they can't take care of themselves.
Of course, these tips are just rules of thumb( 经 验 之 谈 ) and may not be true with all Westerners. Each person will have his or her own ideas about friendship. When you're not sure of something, don't worry to ask questions. Your new Western friends also have many questions about Chinese culture, and they may be hesitant( 犹 豫 ) to ask... So tell them to be brave enough to ask questions, too.
Be honest and open to your friends. Respect each others' differences. The friendship you make can be lifelong treasure for you and your new friends.

The whole class hurried to get in line to wait for their turn to jump. Millie stood at the back of the line and frowned.

The truth was that Millie had been jumping rope at home every day. With a short rope, she could jump 100 times without missing. She just didn't know how to run in and start jumping with a long rope. Since she was the only kid on her street, there was no one to help turn the long rope.
Just then, Ms Miles, the gym teacher, brought out a bunch of short jump ropes.
"Let's see how long each one of you can jump without missing," she said as she gave each student a short rope, "Ready, set. Go!"
Millie smiled for the first time ever in gym class. As she jumped, she sang rhymes quietly to herself.
After a while, Millie realized that everyone was cheering, "Go, Millie, go!"
She was the only one still jumping rope! The surprise almost made her miss a step, but she kept going. When at last she was too tired to go on, she stopped. The whole class cheered. Everyone was looking at her and smiling. Millie smiled back!

八、阅读与回答问题(本题共 5 小题 每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)
Mother Teresa once said, "Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person." However a recent survey showed that 25% of Chinese never smiled or smiled less than five times a day. It also found that only 2% of Chinese were willing to smile at strangers. To make a change, forty students from Shanghai Normal University started a team of "Smiling Volunteers". Their first smiling task was to go to the Shanghai Film Art Centre to smile at all the visitors and asked if they needed their help. Not all students found it easy to smile all the time. "When volunteers help other people, smiling is the best way to make them understand
that volunteers are ready and sincere." One team leader said.
A teacher in charge of(负责) the team thought the team's work was not all fun and games. "Most of our students will be teachers after they leave the university. Smiling is necessary for good teachers. We hope they can learn how to smile at each other," she said.
Everyone smiles in the same language. So it's not important whether you are a teacher or not. After all, sincere smiling and helping hearts are the most important. If today don't start a day with a smile, it won't be too late to start practising for tomorrow. Remember "The world always looks brighter from behind a smile."
96. How many Chinese never smiled or smiled less than five times a day?
97. Who were the members of the team of' "Smiling Volunteers"?
