A map is a tool to help you navigate (导航)somewhere. But James Niehues takes a different view of the maps he creates. Niehues is an artist who has painted over 430 ski-resort (滑雪胜地)maps. He sees maps not only as a guide through the mountain, but also as a way to show the mountain to the person who skis on it. "I describe the mountain in the way a skier would see it," said Niehues. I think the more important thing is to show the exciting adventure the skier is going to have."
Niehues started to be interested in his work after seeing the works of Bill Brown, another artist who painted ski maps. Brown liked Niehues's paintings very much. Later, Niehues received a letter of recommendation(推荐) from Brown. He was invited to go to various ski resorts and start some projects.
Niehues grew up painting the environment around him. He painted every tree, shadow, slope (斜坡)and car. Instead of using a computer, he painted everything by hand.
“Most computer pictures bring the office to your mind instead of the great outdoors,” Niehues said. "The freedom that I have when hand-painting them, or that anyone would have when hand-painting them, is that you have a much freer expression. Your paint is free and alive instead of being put there by a set of numbers.”
Usually, Niehues skis on the mountain he'll paint. He then flies around it, photographing the different slopes. The most challenging part of painting ski-resort maps,he thinks, is drawing all of the surfaces of a slope. So Niehues paints each map by hand for several months. Every mountain is different and the details and variations of nature's beauty are carefully captured in each scene.
As an artistic mapmaker, Niehues enjoys helping viewers not only navigate the way through the mountain, but also understand their ski adventures.

In today's world, it is difficult for many people to have a good night's sleep. We are no longer like people in ancient times, learning to sleep when the sun goes down and wake up when it rises.(36) It breaks the natural rhythm and makes it difficult for us to fall asleep.
To help us improve the situation, Michael Grandner, a clinical psychologist and sleep expert, offers some suggestions.
(37)
Melatonin (褪黑素)is produced by the body. It controls when we get sleepy and when we wake up. To work properly, melatonin should be produced regularly. If our bedtime and wake-up time change, the body doesn't know how to respond. So it's important to set a wake-up time, even on weekends, vacations or after a poor night's sleep.
(38)
Lying in bed awake can form an association (联想)in your brain that can lead to chronic insomnia (慢性失眠).(39) "The best sleep tip you can ever give somebody is not to lie in bed awake,'' Grandner said. "Whether it s in the beginning of the night or in the middle of the night, if you've been awake for 20 or 30 minutes, get out of bed and go back to bed later."
Change your attitude about sleep.
Many people view sleep as the final thing they have to do in a day. They would like to do other things before sleep, like doing housework, schoolwork or office work.(40) Grandner says,
“Don’t see your sleep as the amount of time you have left in your day. See your sleep as the amount of time you need in order to set yourself up for another day.” It may sound like a small change in thinking, but it's an important one.
