21.(6分)    It is not only praise or punishment that determines a child's level of confidence. There are some other important ways we shape our kids — particularly by giving instructions and commands in a negative or positive choice of words. For example, we can say to a child Don’t run into traffic!or Stay on the footpath close to me.In using the latter, you will be helping your kids to think and act positively, and to feel competent in a wide range of situations, because they know what to do, and aren’t scaring themselves about what not to do.

Why does such a small thing make a difference? It is all in the way the human mind works. When we think, we automatically rehearse. For example, if someone offered you a million dollars not to think of a blue monkey for two minutes, you wouldn’t be able to do it. When a child is told Don't fall off the tree, he will think of two things: don’tand fall off the tree. That is, he will automatically create the picture of falling off the tree in his mind. A child who is vividly imagining falling off the tree is much more likely to fall off. So it is far better to use Hold on to the tree carefully.

Clear, positive instructions help kids to understand the right way to do things. Kids do not always know how to be safe, or how to react to the warning of the danger in negative words. So parents should make their commands positive. Sam, hold on firm to the side of the boatis much more useful than Don't you dare to fall out of the boat?or worse still How do you think I'll feel if you drown? The changes are small but difference is obvious.

Children learn how to guide and organize themselves from the way we guide them with our words, so it pays to be positive.

1Positive choice of words helps kids to____________.

Ado things carefully Bbuild up their confidence

Cimprove their imagination Dlearn in different situation

2What can we infer from Paragraph 2?

AA child will act on what is instructed.

BOne can’t help imagining what is heard.

CA child will fall off the tree when told not to.

DOne won’t think of a blue monkey when given money.

3Which of the following commands helps kids to be safe?

    AFasten your seat belt.

    BDon’t play by the lake.

CHow do you think I’ll feel if you get hurt?

DDon’t you dare to walk through the red light.

4The main idea of the passage is that _____________.

    Apraise makes kids confident

    Bright instructions keep kids safe

    Cclear commands make kids different

Dchoice of words can make a difference

23.(8分)Whales, seals and walruses stay warm in cold water because they have a thick layer of blubber. We humans rely on something like blubber—neoprene rubber wet suits—to spend time in cold water. But the thick versions for really icy water are heavy and clumsy. So rather than taking after big marine mammals, what if we could learn from the littler ones, like beavers and otters?

“These animals are quite small and they can’t carry around a thick layer of blubber. So instead they have fur that is evolved to trap air, and this air provides a layer of insulation for them in water.”

Alice Nasto is a graduate student in mechanical engineering at MIT. Scientists have known about this air-trapping insulation mechanism for a long time, but they had not teased out the details of how it works. So Nasto and her colleagues took on the challenge.

“We’re creating these furry samples from these rubbery materials by laser cutting molds and casting these hairy surfaces. And through our approach we can precisely control the spacing of the hairs and the length of the hairs.”

The researchers then created a system to gather data when their pelts (毛皮) entered and moved through a liquid—in this case not water, but silicone oil, which makes it easier to see air bubbles. The key is to keep the pelt’s air layer intact (完好的).

“So when they’re crossing the air water interface, initially their hairy texture is full of air. And then you go into water. How much of the air comes down with you as you’re moving in through the interface. So that’s what this model will tell you.”

They found that the denser the hairs, the more the air gets trappedwhich should keep the animal—or potentially the human in a future furry wet suit—warm. The research is in the journal Physical Review Fluids.

“What we would like to work on moving forward is understanding, after you dive into the water, how do you maintain this air layer trapped in your fur. And there’s lots of interesting properties of the fur in nature that we haven’t yet looked at in our model that could help explain how this mechanism might work.”

So for now, cold-water divers and surfers will still emulate seals or sea lions. But the day may come when they’ll more closely resemble otters or beavers.

1What can make littler mammals keep warm in cold water?

AAn air-trapping insulation mechanism.    BA thick layer of blubber.

CA fur that is evolved to trap air.    DA neoprene rubber wet suit.

2Nasto and her colleagues have revealed _______________.

Athe denser the hairs, the more the air can be carried with.

Bthe way this air-trapping insulation mechanism works.

Chow the air layer trapped in the fur is maintained in water.

Dthe existence of the air-trapping insulation mechanism.

3The passage is most probably taken from ______________.

    Aa newspaper    Ba travel book

Ca medical report    Da science magazine

4What is the best title for the passage?

AA Fantastic Layer of Fur    BAn Important Research

24.(8分)    Generally speaking, people like those who have a good sense of humor.

Sometimes a touch of humor might well enable us to win. Consider the case of a young friend of mine, who hit a traffic jam on his way to work shortly after receiving an ultimatum (最后通牒) about being late on the job. Although there was a good reason for Brian’s being late—serious illness at home—he decided that this by-now-familiar excuse wouldn’t work any longer. His boss was probably already pacing up and down preparing a dismissal speech.

Yes, the boss was, as Brian entered the office at 9:35. The place was as quiet as a locker room (更衣室): everyone was hard at work. Brian’s boss came up to him. Suddenly, Brian forced a smile and stretched out his hand. “How do you do!” he said. “I’m Brian. I’m applying for a job, which, I understand, became available just 35 minutes ago. Doesn’t the early bird get the worm?”

The room exploded in laughter. The boss clamped off a smile and walked back to his office. Brian had saved his job, with the only tool that could win—a laugh.

Humor is a most effective, yet frequently neglected means of handling the difficult situations in our lives. It can be used for patching up differences, apologizing, saying “no”, criticizing, getting the other fellow to do what you want without his losing face. For some jobs, it’s the only tool that can succeed. It is a way to discuss subjects so sensitive that serious dialog may start a quarrel. For example, many believe that comedians on television are doing more today for racial and religious tolerance (忍受力) than people in any other forum.

1Brian was late for his job because ________.

Ahe got up late Bhe was seriously ill

Che was caught in a traffic jam Dhe was busy applying for a new job

2What can we infer about humor?

    AIt is the early bird.

BIt is important in our lives.

CBrian often saved his job with humor.

    DIt can solve racial discriminations.

3What does the underlined phrase “clamped off” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

    Acharge Btried to set

Cgave up Dtried to hold back

4What can we learn from the text?

AMany people lack in a sense of humor.

BBrian was supposed to arrive at his office at 8: 30.

CIt wasn’t the first time that Brian came late for work.

DHumor is the most interesting way of solving problems.

25.(10分)Who could have imagined that a treadmill(跑步机)on wheels would one day become a thing? Lopifit is an unusual means of transportation that allows you to power an electric bicycle by walking on a treadmill.

Lopifit founder Bruin Bergmeester says it all started when he asked himself the question. "How can I use a treadmill outdoors?" He eventually came up with a design, to which he added an electric engine, and Lopifit was born. The treadmill bicycle is similar to a typical electric bicycle in that the motor only works when the rider puts power in as well. The Lopifit senses it when you walk on the treadmill and uses the motor to turn a drive chain at the back part of the treadmill, helping you reach a top speed of 17 miles per hour.

To use the Lopifit, simply turn on the battery and use your feet to slide the treadmill backwards and activate (激活) the motor. Then get on and enjoy the ride! If you need speed, just walk on the treadmill, and if you want to coast, all you have to do is stay still and admire the view. To stop, you have two hand brakes available.

The Lopifit first hit the streets in 2014 and, unsurprisingly, became an instant hit. That was actually quite challenging for the company, because it started get inquiries and calls for orders, but it was nowhere near ready for mass production. The unique treadmill bicycle became available this year, and Lopifit is struggling to keep up with demand, despite the high price tag of $ 2,115.

But despite having a very loyal fan-base of so-called Lopifitters, the creative means of transportation also has naysayers who simply consider the invention stupid and unnecessary. They basically believe that if you’re going to walk, you might as well do it the old-fashioned way. But the Lopifit does have the unique advantage of helping you walk really fast without breaking a sweat, or walking at cycling speed, if you will.

1With the help of Lopifit, you can ________.

    Acycle to work by walking

    Boffer power to any bicycle

    Ccreate a treadmill on wheels

    Danswer some hard questions

2From the second paragraph, we can learn ________.

    Ahow Lopifit was created

    Bwhere Lopifit can be used

    Cwho Lopifit is intended for

Dwhich design is suitable for Lopifit

3What can be learned from the fourth paragraph?

ALopifit was cheap and available in 2014.

BLopifit always broke down on the streets.

CIt was hard for the company to design Lopifit.

DThe supply of Lopifit failed to meet the demand.

4How do the public react to Lopifit?

    APositively.

    BVariously.

    CAngrily.

    DCautiously.

Today I still remember clearly that there was the time when life was really hard in a remote mountain village. However, my mother held a total opposite view that her three daughters should get educated no matter what others thought and no matter what hard life was. My mother got little education because the Chinese Cultural Revolution and she decided not to let the same thing to happen to her girls. I hear that you are going to climb the mountain. Now I’d like to share my views on climbing with you.

For my part, climbing is a very good activity. When you are tired of your study, you can go out to enjoy the climbing. Only by relaxing yourself can you refresh yourself and improve your health.

In order to enjoy the activity, you need to make full preparations in advance. You had better have clear information about the weather, and bring proper clothes. When you are climbing, I suggest that you pay attention to every step you make in case you hurt yourself.

I hope you will have a good time.

    Yours,

    Li Hua
