    A
    Pedal Street by Breeze
    Reviewer Anna Martino,age 13
Breeze has released Pedal Street after a two-year wait,in spite of pressure from fans and the record company.Fans had been told to expect something special and this is a masterpiece. This band’s music is exceptional. The song lyrics (歌词) express emotions that are felt by everybody, focusing on topics other artists seem to prefer not to sing about.Breeze uses an interesting mix of styles including classical strings (弦乐器) and modern guitar riffs (重复段).
    Thrill by Skydiggers
    Reviewer Alexis Walker,age 14
Skydiggers,a Canadian rock group, have released the album (专辑) Thrill, which was recorded over two years.Although some tunes (曲调) are difficult to tell apart from each other in the sense that Suzi Tarrant’s voice doesn’t vary from song to song, the album will soon be permanently fixed on your playlist.
Silver Honeybees by Lena and the Lantanas
    Reviewer Sam Roberts,age 16
Lena has been allowed to sing all types of songs here in order to really show what she can do.And in case you think that her new far-ranging style may not be attractive to a youthful teenage fan base, remember that her teen audience is sure to grow along with her as she makes more music. While some bands include good beats but have meaningless lyrics that make you feel slightly sick,or sing songs with meaningful words yet make a terrible sound, the Lantanas are different and a rare find.
    Hungry Rock by April Sapa
    Reviewer Julie Zhang,age 14
The album covers everything a teenager can feel:love, hate, acceptance and even boredom. It is an excellent combination of easy listening, even though there are several songs that could easily have been left out, resulting in a better album overall.
21.What can we learn about Pedal Street?
A.It was a let-down for fans. B.It is emotional and unusual.
C.It was prepared in a short time. D.It mainly consists of rock music.
22.What does Roberts say about Silver Honeybees?
A.It attracts people of all ages.
    B.It makes you feel heartbroken.
C.It covers several types of music.
D.It has both good words and sounds.
23.What type of writing is this text?
    A.Reports. B.Music reviews.
    C.Advertisements. D.Event announcements.

    B
Like many couples,Sheila and David Hoffman enjoy travelling.Since 2000,they’ve often visited relatives in Australia and enjoyed holidays in many European countries including France,Germany,Italy, and Greece. And they’ve toured around America, but they haven’t once stayed in a hotel. The Hoffmans are part of a growing number of people who use their homes as a way to have inexpensive holidays. So far, they’ve swapped their three-bedroom London home with people who want to stay there for anything from a week to two months.
In a home swap, you offer your house as a place to stay and anyone who’s interested gets in touch. If your dates and requirements fit, then you make a deal to exchange houses for an agreed time. The exchange can involve more than just a place to stay—some homeowners also exchange cars and others will arrange for a friend or neighbour to be on call in case of emergencies. Some exchangers will even organise restaurant bookings and trips.
Home swaps have existed in Britain on an organised basis for decades but they really took off with the arrival of the Internet.Previously, the process was long and drawn-out,involving letter exchanges and expensive international calls to complete arrangements. Now,it can all be done with a few clicks. Most home-exchangers register(注册) with a specialist home-exchange company that deals with the organisation.
More people are using their homes as a way to enjoy holidays at home as well as abroad. Most of them choose to follow the trend because they are interested in how natives lead their lives. When you live in a typical home rather than a hotel,it’s almost like an exchange of lifestyles. It’s also a cheap way to travel making sure you won’t run short of money on your journey.
24.Where do Sheila and David Hoffman live?
A.In Australia. B.In the US. C.In the UK. D.In France.
25.Which word can be used to describe some homeowners mentioned in paragraph 2?
    A.Smart. B.Strict. C.Humorous. D.Thoughtful.
26.What can we know about the home-exchange process in the past?
A.It caused many problems. B.It saved a lot of time.
    C.It was well-organised. D.It was complicated.
27.What is the main reason for more people swapping their homes?
A.They hope to experience life as the locals.
B.They are not used to staying in hotels.
C.They do not want to leave their houses unused.
D.They need to earn money from exchanging their homes.

    C
Ask a classroom of children to draw a scientist, and you’ll see plenty of colored lab coats and glasses. The image(画像) hasn’t changed much since the 1960s,but the person wearing the lab coat is changing.
A new analysis finds that more female scientists have appeared in kids’ drawings in recent decades—going from nearly non-existent in the 1960s to about a third in 2016.
The first of many “draw-a-scientist” studies asked nearly 5,000 children to draw a scientist between 1966 and 1977.Of those 5,000 drawings, only 28 drew female scientists. That was just 0.56 percent.Today, female scientists are being presented more in the media. For example,in a content analysis,13 percent of people pictured in science feature stories of the 1960s were women or girls, compared with 44 percent in the 2000s.“That might really affect children’s idea of what a scientist should be like,” says Miller,a Ph.D.candidate in psychology.
To look for changes in children’s perception over time, the researchers conducted a meta-analysis,combining data from 78 studies that included a total of more than 20,000 children from kindergarten to the 12th grade. On average,28 percent of children drew female scientists in studies conducted from 1965 to 2016.
What hasn’t changed much:kids pick up stereotypes (模式化观念) of gender (性别) as they grow up.At age 6,about 70 percent of the girls in the more recent studies drew female scientists.By age 16,75 percent drew male scientists. This is an important period in which kids are learning stereotypes. It’s important that teachers and parents present diverse examples of both male and female scientists.
28.What’s the picture of scientists drawn by a 1960s’ kid like?
A.A woman with long curly hair.
    B.A woman with lab glasses.
C.A woman in a formal lab suit.
D.A man in a colored lab coat.
29.What may contribute to the changes in kids’ drawings?
A.The improvement of women’s social status.
B.The kids are affected by teachers and parents.
C.More female scientists appear in the media.
D.The increasing number of female scientists.
30.What does the underlined word “perception” in paragraph 4 most probably mean?
    A.Belief. B.Idea. C.Habit. D.Growth.
31.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that .
A.it’s a stereotype that scientists are generally males
B.girls are more influenced by stereotypes than boys
C.some children are born with certain stereotypes
D.most children tend to prefer female scientists

Volunteering to take care of neighborhood pets is a great way for kids to learn responsibility.
    Ideas for getting started
Have your kids make flyers (传单) to place around the neighborhood, showcasing their willingness to help out by caring for neighborhood pets. 36 Also encourage them to come up with their own ideas for flyers.
    Helping out
Your children can volunteer for small pet-sitting jobs that are easy for both you and them to manage. 37 You can accompany your children, while also allowing them to take the leash (牵狗绳) and lead the way.
    Learning opportunities
Offering activities, like animal caretaking, benefits little animals and your children at the same time. 38 For example, the tropical fish you are feeding for friends can offer a wonderful platform for researching their natural habitat.
    Emotional benefits of animals
The benefits of interaction between children and animals go beyond the physical aspect,as well. 39 Children learn to make emotional connections through the love that animals provide.Having children care for pets also provides an opportunity to discuss emotions children often struggle to understand.
40 Offer positive affirmations (肯定) to your children to underline the additional exercise they are also enjoying from this responsibility,so they will also recognise that there is a healthy connection. When you praise your children’s willingness to take on this kind of new responsibility, you can be assured that it will eventually be translated in a very positive way to the world around them.

A.Pets also meet many psychological needs.

I was the “fool” at school.Obviously, because I was not interested in school and did not care for my grades, and thus I was termed a student with special needs.
Over time,I started to believe in my stupidity.I absorbed the fact that I was in classes with special needs in high school.I didn’t have much confidence and was always negative. But one activity changed this view of myself:chess.
I started to play chess with my father after school because I wanted to beat him at something. My father was a smart man, fond of physics, writing, drawing—almost every discipline (知识领域).He was called a walking dictionary. So,winning in chess against my father would be a sign that I had intellectual (智力上的) power.
Game after game,I wanted to beat my father even more.I started to study chess books and play against a chess computer to improve my skills. One weekend,I beat my father while we were on a bus ride to Port Townsend. It made me feel excited and I dreamed of standing on the winner’s stage of a chess competition.
Fast forward two years and several months,I was the second board on my high school chess team, with our top board being the best high school player in the state. There was an exhibition match,so I invited my father to watch.Since our top player could not come,it was my chance to play as the top board against the best high school players in the state. It was also a chance for me to let my father be proud of me.
I was determined to show who I had become:an intelligent person able to win with calculation (计算),logic, and will.My most memorable game came in the fourth round.I was playing the black pieces and played my usual kingside defence. The competitor was making moves skillfully and it was hard for me to defend my position.
He kept attacking and I kept defending, finding hidden resources to keep my king safe. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The present situation was to my advantage, and then I made the final perfect kingside defence._____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

M:Could you take this down to the accounting office for me,please?
W:Sure,Mr Stone.I will just be on my way down to the shipping department, anyway.Accounting office is just one floor above it,so it’s right on the way and I will do it for you first.
M:Great.Maybe when you get back,I could take you to that Thai restaurant you’re always telling me about.
    (Text 4)
W:How about going camping this weekend?

    (Text 5)

M:Well,it depends. If you come to a private instructor like me,it’s going to be a bit less expensive than going to a big school. The thing is that most people have usually heard of the big schools by the Internet or newspapers so they go there. My first customer is one of my friends,so I usually get my customers through personal connections.
W:Does that mean you have to try hard to get customers?
M:Not now. When I started,I had to work hard and taught one-to-one,but at the moment I am fully booked, and my prices are quite competitive.
W:No wonder you have so many customers.
    (Text 9)
    W:Hi,Matt.May I ask you a few questions?
M:Certainly,Julian. What do you want to know?
W:I’m doing a study on the spending habits of students in our school.I’m writing a paper for my social studies course.
    M:That sounds interesting.
W:To begin with, how much money do you get from your parents a month?
M:I get about five hundred dollars.
W:How do you spend your money?
M:I spend about three hundred dollars on food. You know how I like to eat.
W:Yes.What about the rest of the money?
M:Well,I spend on shows about thirty dollars a month.Games,uh,for rental of tennis court and balls about fifty dollars.I do spend some on things like reading material. And the rest I save.
    W:What about clothes?
M:My mother buys them for me.
    W:Thanks a lot,Matt.
    M:You’re welcome!

Please listen carefully. We’ll be hiking down into the Grand Canyon soon. But even though it’s a comfortable 26℃ here now,it’ll get much hotter as we go down.In fact, when we get to the bottom four hours from now,it’ll be 43℃ down there. So,most important, everyone must take along at least three liters of water. You’d better wear comfortable clothes and take some medicine in case you suffer from an illness. The heat can kill!In fact this year four people have already died in the Grand Canyon from heat exhaustion. One of them,a healthy 24-year-old man, just died one week ago. These have been the first heat-related deaths in the Grand Canyon in five years.Normally, people die in the Grand Canyon when they fall into it.Sometimes they also just get lost or get bitten by snakes, but this year has been extremely hot.The average daily temperature has been 41℃ at the bottom. So,be careful and tell me if you feel uncomfortably hot.Last,I will carry a camp;one will take a compass;three other persons will take a map.Well, good luck!

根据第一段中的“Ask a classroom of children to draw a scientist, and you’ll see plenty of colored lab coats and glasses.”和第二段中的“A new analysis finds that more female scientists have appeared in kids’ drawings in recent decades—going from nearly non-existent in the 1960s to about a third in 2016.”
根据第三段中的“Today, female scientists are being presented more in the media.”和“‘That might really affect children’s idea of what a scientist should be like,’says Miller,a Ph.D.candidate in psychology.”
根据第三段中的“That might really affect children’s idea of what a scientist should be like”及第四段中的“the researchers conducted a meta-analysis,combining data from 78 studies that included a total of more than 20,000 children from kindergarten to the 12th grade”可知,研究者做研究是为了了解孩子们对科学家的想法,因此画线词perception的意思是“想法”,即idea。
根据最后一段的“What hasn’t changed much:kids pick up stereotypes of gender as they grow up.At age 6,about 70 percent of the girls in the more recent studies drew female scientists.By age 16,75 percent drew male scientists. This is an important period in which kids are learning stereotypes.”
根据第一段中的 “But never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be the president of the American Medical Association(AMA).”
根据第二段中的 “Harris worked extremely hard to achieve her dream. She said,‘In life, none of us can achieve success without any setback. What’s important is to learn from these challenges.’”
根据第三段中的 “But it is not awards, she said, but rather treating and caring for her patients that has motivated her throughout her career.”
根据第三段中“...because every opportunity that I have to help a patient in need is so meaningful, and it shows me why I originally wanted to go into the profession of medicine”可知,她认为每次有机会帮助病人是很有意义的,由此可见,她认为和病人的互动是值得的,fulfilling与下文meaningful相呼应,故选D项。
36.F 根据上文中的“Have your kids make flyers to place around the neighborhood, showcasing their willingness to help out by caring for neighborhood pets.”及下文中的“Also encourage them to come up with their own ideas for flyers.”
37.E 下文中的“You can accompany your children, while also allowing them to take the leash and lead the way.”
38.D 根据下文中的“For example, the tropical fish you are feeding for friends can offer a wonderful platform for researching their natural habitat.”
39.A 根据下文中的“Children learn to make emotional connections through the love that animals provide.Having children care for pets also provides an opportunity to discuss emotions children often struggle to understand.”
    40.G 根据下文中的“Offer positive affirmations to your children...When you praise your children’s willingness”可知,要及时给予孩子赞许和肯定,让他们知道自己做得很棒,且这件事对他们的身心均有益。

    Dear Sir or Madam,
I bought a digital camera from your website last Saturday, but I have to say that I am disappointed with its quality.
First, the screen is always black,so I have to restart it again and again, which brings much inconvenience to me.Besides, the battery can only support the camera’s operation for half an hour, and I can never find a place to charge it.Therefore,I want to change it for another camera or get a refund.
I would appreciate it if my problem can receive due attention.
    Yours sincerely,
    Li Hua

He kept attacking and I kept defending, finding hidden resources to keep my king safe.He thought long about how to take me down, which gave me time to stay calm and not panic. He tried to break down my kingside defence, but failed in the final push. His time was almost up and he started to make rapid moves.I returned with more defensive measures and tried to make it as difficult for him as possible, which made him really anxious.
The present situation was to my advantage, and then I made the final perfect kingside defence. As I thought,he couldn’t figure out a way to rescue himself after my moves. At last,I beat the top competitor.I saw my father in the audience who was moved to tears. While standing on the winner’s stage,I knew I was not a fool.Chess is something that has totally changed my life.Since then, the negative part of me has melted away, and I have realised that everyone should live with confidence.
