When you are learning English, you find it not clever to put an English sentence word for word into your own language. Take the sentence "How do you do?" as an example. If you look up each word in the dictionary, one at a time, what is your translation? It must be a wrong sentence in your own language. Languages do not just have different sounds, but they are different in many ways. It's important to learn the rules of word order in the study of English, too. If the speakers put words in a wrong order, the listener can't understand the speaker's sentence easily. Sometimes when the order of words in an English sentence is changed, the meaning of the sentence changes. But sometimes when the order is changed, the meaning of the sentence doesn't change. Let's see the difference between the two pairs of sentences. "She only likes apples. " "Only she likes apples." "I have seen the film already. " "I have already seen the film. "
When you are learning English, you must do your best to get the spirit(精髓) of the language and use it as the English speakers do.

Several days ago, I went to my aunt's home and saw my cousin who was studying English linguistics in a college. He showed me his learning materials. Here are two pages of it.
Nice Generally speaking, the word "nice" is quite an expression of praise(赞扬)。However, long ago, if someone said you were "nice", it was far from saying good words about you. " Nice" was also used to mean " foolish" and " stupid". That sounds more like the kind of words that would start a fight. Later on, "nice" came to mean "shy and nervous". After that, it even meant "being careful". But finally it changed to the meaning we know today, and ever since then, people have been using it in a lovable way. | Sad All of us get sad from time to time. It's a usual part of life. A loved one passes away. We expect too much progress in an exam, or the store is out of our favorite drink. These are all things that can make us sad. However, once upon a time, "sad" had a very different meaning. Long ago, it was the perfect word if you had eaten too much food at dinner. Through the years, the meaning of "sad" changed to " heavy" and then "tired".
|
Now I know at some point in history, the meanings of some common words that we see every day meant something much different. The English language is developing(发展)all the time.

Few words are spoken more often every day on the streets of Britain than "I'm sorry". This phrase has become such a common response(反应) that it has taken on a lot of meanings.
Saying "Sorry" means to apologize(道歉)。 This is simple and easy to understand. We learn it both as a native speaker and as a student of foreign languages.
But in Britain, it takes on another meaning. It is a cultural expression. Imagine this: a man walks down the street, looking down at his phone. A woman is walking in the opposite direction, towards the man. She sees him, but she can't get out of the way in time. The man bumps(碰撞)into the woman. Who should say sorry? Naturally, the man should say sorry, because it was he who wasn't looking where he was going. Yet in Britain, it is common for both to apologize.
It is known that British people, like most people, do not enjoy conflict( 冲突)。 To quickly calm the situation, British people will apologize to each other.
Other times it may sound funny to hear " sorry". Some of my friends say it at restaurants, as they ask the waiter," Sorry, but can I order another drink?" It is not to apologize, but just to express that we need the waiter. In Britain, "sorry" doesn't always mean exactly what you think.
7. According to the passage, " sorry" is a cultural expression in________.
A. the USAB. the UKC. the WWFD. the UN
8,The example in the third paragraph is used to________.

Do you sometimes feel different, alone or left out? Recently scientists have done a survey(调查) about being alone among people aged from 3 to 60. It shows that teenagers have great needs to feel like they belong to a group. But being a loner doesn't always mean being strange or disliked. In fact, it has become a lifestyle in many countries among young people who consider(考虑)being alone to be an everyday part of life.
In South Korea ,there are a growing number of people who describe themselves as " honjok". The word comes from " hon" ( alone) and "jok" (tribe). These people eat alone, travel alone, and enjoy being by themselves.

In recent years, there have been many films about robots trying to take over the world. Studies show that up to 20 million factory jobs worldwide could be taken by robots in the next 10 years. Some people are worried about what might happen in the future.
On 8th September,2020,The Guardian published(发表) an article written by a robot called GPT-3. It wrote that humans have nothing to fear from robots, which are only here to help humans. However, the fact that a robot could write such an article has made some people feel even more uneasy. Where is the robot technology heading? Can robots and humans work together?
YES- they're here to help humans Robots are created by humans for humans. Robots take on jobs that are too dangerous for people to do by themselves. Although robots might take some people's jobs, they will create new types of work, and they will possibly create more jobs than they take away. Besides, robots' programming could actually make them more trustworthy than humans, because they are not influenced by feelings. |
NO-humans should not trust robots Robots are already taking over the world. Jobs that used to be done by human beings are now being taken by robots. Although robots are under our control now, that might not always be the case. An experiment in Switzerland found that some robots had learnt how to lie to each other. With the development of AI(人工智能),robots could start to act in their own interests. Wherever possible, humans should do things themselves. |
What's your opinion on this matter?

So, it's exam time again. Have you done the necessary work to get good marks? Sleeping with the textbook under the pillow(枕头)doesn't work. The best way is to space your practice out, rather than cram(塞满) it all together. Just as a scientist called Tom Stafford advises, if you organize five hours of study into one hour a day, you'll remember more than if you study for five hours a day.
▲ Get pens and paper and start working! Students who can test themselves earlier will be better at retrieving the knowledge from the memory and keep it in the long run. John Dunlosky, a professor in the US, suggests that "you start by reading a textbook with your favorite pens and colors, and then write down the important ideas on small cards. While doing so, you actually try to test yourselves on them."
Good revision(复习) should give you confidence, but if you are still worried, it's not harmful to follow some special customs. In Japan, it seems to be a tradition for students to eat Katsudon before a test. This is a bowl of rice with egg and pork pieces. The name of the dish makes people think of the word "katsu", meaning " winning", For some students in South Korea, the key to success is not washing their hair before an exam, because they believe they could wash all the knowledge out of their heads. And in different parts of the world, there are always those who believe in their "lucky underwear".
The bottom line is that you need to study, eat a good meal, sleep well on the eve of the test, and believe that your efforts will pay off.
Good luck in your exam!
5. When you "space your practice out", you_________.
A. study for at least 5 hours a day
B. sleep with your textbooks under the pillow
C. organize 5 hours of study into one hour a day
D. read a textbook with your favorite pens

7.The underlined word " retrieving" would probably mean”__________”
A. filling in
B. getting back
C. giving away

B. In some countries, washing hair brings bad luck after having exams.
C. Some people might wear special underwear before important events.
D. Special customs can't ease your worries about an exam.
9.What does the writer advise students to do before tests?
