Swimming and English Learning
Can you swim? Do you like swimming? Yes? Well, how can you learn to swim? I think the best way is to go into the water and learn. I'm afraid you'll never learn to swim just by reading books about swimming or looking at others swimming. It's the same with the English study. We must practice, practice and practice.
Listening and speaking are very important for beginners. The children in English-speaking countries first listen to others. Then they try to imitate and speak. We can listen to English programs on radio. You may just understand a few words. It doesn't matter. Just be relaxed, try to catch every word.
Somebody may be a good listener. But he dare not speak. He's afraid of making mistakes. You know we sometimes make mistakes when we speak Chinese. Don’t be afraid. We must be brave. If you really want to learn English well, you must try to speak with everyone so long as he knows English. Whether you know him or not is not important when there’s nobody to talk with, you can talk to yourself in English. It's interesting and also a good way to practice your spoken English. Remember, the more you speak, the fewer mistakes you'll make.
Reading and writing are more important for senior school students. First we must choose the books we’re interested in. A lot of reading will improve your language sense. This is the most important.
Keep writing English diaries. We can also write English articles. You may even post them to English magazines. Don't be afraid of failure. Failure is the mother of success.
Easier said than done. Well, let's do more practice from now on. I'm sure you'll learn English well in this way

Human beings are always on the way to search for better learning methods. To learn something new, you have to fail several times. However, how many times do you need to fail? Many education experts say that there is a “sweet spot (the position on a bat or racket where the best effect is achieved)” in learning. That is, we learn best when we are challenged to get something just outside the level of our knowledge. If a challenge is too simple, we don't learn anything new. However, we can't improve our knowledge either and may give up when a challenge is too difficult.
So where does the sweet spot lie? According to a new study, it is when failure happens 15% of the time. To put it another way, it's when the right answer is given 85% of the time.
A professor(教授) named Wilson and some researchers did some experiments(实验) and then came up with “85% Rule”. They taught computers some simple tasks. They found when difficulty was 15%, the computers learned fastest.
When researchers looked at studies of animal learning, they found that 85% Rule held true in those examples as well.
“If the classes you are taking are too easy and you can do well in them easily, then you probably aren't getting as much out of a class as someone who is trying to keep up,” Wilson said.

D.If a challenge is simple, 85% of learners can learn fastest.

Why is it that some people seem to learn several languages without any effort, while for others learning just one foreign language is neither enjoyable nor successful? What makes learning a new language so easy for some and so difficult for others?
We each have our own preferred way of learning as a result of our cultural and educational backgrounds and our personalities.Experts have identified different learning styles.
Visual Learners usually enjoy reading and prefer to see an image of the words they are learning. They like looking at pictures and flash cards.Auditory Learners,on the other hand, prefer to learn by listening. They enjoy conversations and talking to others. They don’t need to see words written down. One study revealed that Japanese students tend to be Visual Learners, while English-speaking Americans, prefer the auditory learning style.
Some people like to learn by using their hands to touch objects, while others like to move around and need frequent breaks from sitting at a desk.
There are Analytical Learners, meaning they enjoy understanding how the language works. They love studying grammar rules and like to focus on details, whereas Global Learners are more interested in communicating their ideas and are not worried about whether what they say is grammatically correct.
In spoken English, the Japanese tend to be Reflective Learners. They think carefully before they speak to ensure their message is accurate. They do not make so many mistakes but their communication is slower.European learners tend to be more Impulsive Learners. They speak more fluently and worry about how well they are communicating rather than how many mistakes they are making.
So,to do well in a language, you should identify your style and try to find a class that will teach you the way you want to learn. For example,if you are a Reflective Learner, you may not do so well in a purely conversational class and as an Auditory Learner, you probably don’t want to do so much reading. In fact if you are an Auditory Learner, you are probably not enjoying yourself right now!

A.The way people are taught to learn a language. B.The place where people are from.
C.The size of people. D.The kind of person people are.

A.see things B.touch things
C.hear things D.do things

Reading is the key to school success and, like any other skill, it takes practice. A child learns to walk by practicing until he no longer has to think about how to put one foot in front of the other. An excellent sportsman practices until he can play quickly, correctly and without thinking. Educators call it “automaticity(自动性)”.
A child learns to read by sounding the letters and finding the meaning of the words. With practice, he stumbles less and less, reading by the phrase(短语). With automaticity, he doesn't have to think about the meaning of words, so he can give all his attention to the meaning of the text.
It can begin as early as the first grade. In a recent study of children in Illinois schools, Alan Rossman of Northwestern University found that automatic readers in the first grade not only read almost three times as fast as the others, but also got better results in exams.
According to Rossman, the key to automaticity is the amount(数量) of time a child spends reading, not his IQ. Any child who spends at least 3.5 to 4 hours a week reading books, magazines or newspapers will probably reach automaticity. It can happen if a child turns off TV just one night for reading at home.
You can test yourself by reading something new that is suitable (适合)for your level. If you read aloud with expression, with a sense of the meaning of the sentences, you probably are an automatic reader. If you read brokenly, one word at a time, without expression or meaning, you need more practice.

( )27.Children with “automaticity” can read faster because they.

( )28.Rossman tells that any child who will possibly be an automatic reader.
A.seldom turns off TV B.reads books by the word quickly
C.spends about an hour reading every day D.gets the same grades as others in exams
( )29.The underlined word “stumbles” in the passage means “ ”in Chinese.
A.结结巴巴地读 B.全神贯注地读
C.心不在焉地读 D.声情并茂地读
