第二部分 阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
21.(6分)The hit movie Finding Nemo follows a clownfish from the Great Barrier Reef. In real life, clownfish are among the thousands of colorful sea creatures that call the Great Barrier Reef home. Stretching 1, 250 miles along Australia’s northeastern coast, the Great Barrier Reef is the longest coral reef in the world.
A coral reef is a living underwater structure. But these days, the Great Barrier Reef has found itself in trouble. Overfishing, pollution, and high temperatures are harming its health. That’s why the government in Australia is trying to help rescue the reef.
Underwater Garden
While coral may look like a plant, it is actually made up of tiny sea animal. Those sea animals are called coral polyps.
As polyps die, they leave hard shells behind. Other polyps grow on top of the shells. Over thousands of years, they form a coral reef in warm water that is not very deep.
In many ways, the Great Barrier Reef resembles an underwater garden. Coral can be hard or soft. It forms in different colors and in strange shapes. Some coral looks like hardened brains. Other coral looks like fans and lettuces.
The reef bursts with schools of tropical fish, dashing among gaps in the coral. The reef supplies food and shelter to creatures living in and around the coral. Turtles, sharks, sea horses, and crabs are among its many inhabitants.
Helping Humans
While the reef is important to ocean life, it helps humans, too. People rely on the reef for both food and jobs. It also provides medicine used to treat disease. Each year, the Great Barrier Reef contributes about $ 975 million to the economy through tourism and fishing.
Stressed Out
Is it surprising, then, that the Great Barrier Reef is under too much stress? Fishing nets and ships break off sections and damage the reef. Air and water pollution are also doing harm. At the same time, warmer sea temperatures have caused coral bleaching(漂白)on half of the reef. The high temperatures cause the coral to turn white, often killing it.
Reef Rescue
In an effort to help save the reef, the government has limited fishing to two thirds of it. That plan increases the number of “green zones.” Those are areas that are off-limits to fishermen and boats. However, tourists and researchers can still visit them. Many fishermen are upset about the plan because they rely on the reef for jobs.
The Australian government says that its plan will help keep the reef safe from some threats. “It is very important that we give a reef proper protection for the future,” said one government official. The reef is Australia’s greatest natural treasure.

22.(8分) Compassion(同情)is a desire within us to help others. With effort,we can translate compassion into action. An experience last weekend showed me this is true.I work part-time in a supermarket across from a building for the elderly. These old people are our main customers, and it's not hard to lose patience over their slowness. But last Sunday, one aged gentleman appeared to teach me a valuable lesson. This untidy man walked up to my register(收款机)with a box of biscuits. He said he was out of cash, had just moved into his room, and had nothing in his cupboards. He asked if we could let him have the food on trust. He promised to repay me the next day.
I couldn't help staring at him.I wondered what kind of person he had been ten or twenty years before, and what he would be like if fortune had gone his way.I had a hurt in my heart for this kind of human soul, all alone in the world.I told him that I was sorry, but store rules didn't allow me to do so.I felt stupid and unkind saying this, but I valued my job.
Just then, another man, standing behind the first, spoke up.If anything,he looked more pitiable."Charge it to me," was all he said.
What I had been feeling was pity.Pity is soft and safe and easy.Compassion,on the other hand,is caring in action. 23.(8分) A serious problem for today's society is who should be responsible for our elderly and how to improve their Lives. It is not only a financial problem but also a quashing of the system we want for our society.I would like to suggest several possible solutions to this problem.
First, employers should take the responsibility for their retired employees. To make this possible, a percentage of profits should be set aside for this purpose. But when a company must take life-long responsibility for its employees, it may softer from a commercial disadvantage due to higher employee costs.
Another way of solving the problem is to return the responsibility to the individual. This means each person must save during his working years to pay for his years of retirement. This does not seem a very fair model since some people have enough trouble paying for their daily life without trying to earn extra to cover their retirement years. This means the government might have to step in to care for the poor.
In addition, the government could take responsibility for the care of the elderly. This could be financed through government taxes to increase the level of pensions.Furthermore, some institution should be created for senior daises, which can help provide a comfortable life for them.Unfortunately, as the present situation in our country shows, this is not a truly viable answer. The government can seldom afford to care for the elderly, particularly when it is busy trying to care for the young.
One further solution is that the government or social organizations establish some working places especially for the elderly where they are independent.
To sum up, all these options have advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, it is reasonable to expect that some combination of these options may be needed to provide the care we hope to give to our elderly generations.
1、What is the passage mainly about?
A.The problems faced by the old in society.
B.Why we should take responsibility for the old.
C.How we can improve the lives of the old.
D.Where the old can go to get their pensions.
2、According to the passage, how can the government help to improve the lives of retired people?
A.Set aside some profits to help people with problems after they retire.
B.Increase savings levels of people during their working years.
C.Increase the discounts for food and transport for the old.
D.Make available pensions for those who have retired.
3、The underlined word "viable" most probably means"_ ".
A.impossible B.practical
C.useful D.successful
4、What can be concluded from the passage?
A.Taking care of the old is mainly an issue of money.
B.Employers should allow their workers to retire at a later age.
C.Becoming independent should be the goal of most old people.
D.There is no single solution to the problems of the old.
5、What is the writer's main purpose in writing this article?
A.To point out the need for government supped for old people.
B.To make general readers aware of the problems of retired people.
C.To discuss some possible solutions to an important social problem.
D.To instruct retired people on how they can have a happier life.
24.(8分)When we hear of dangerous diseases, cancer and heart disease are often what first come
to mind. Recently, a virus called Ebola has reappeared in Guinea, killing 62 people so far. It leads to high fever, bleeding and so on. Ebola can kill 90% of those infected (感染), especially in underdeveloped societies like those in Africa.
Ebola is named after the Ebola River, where it was first discovered in 1976. There are five different types of the Ebola virus, each named after where they first happened: Sudan, Ivory Coast, Reston, Bundibugyo, and Zaire. The deadliest of the five, Zaire, was responsible for the 2012 outbreak, and is believed to be attacking Guinea.
Ebola is naturally found in fruit bats, which pass on the virus to other animals by biting or sucking on their blood. Humans who are suffering from the Ebola infection might have touched the bodily fluids (体液) of the infected animals. Once infected, a human becomes a carrier of the deadly virus.
Since we live in an interconnected world, where the situation in one country can affect us all, the effects of Ebola are huge: damaging trade relations, affecting foreign visitors, and weakening entire countries. Already the Guinea virus is spreading fast with a few cases spotted in Conakry—the capital city of Guinea, far away from the origin of the virus. It is feared that the disease may have already reached neighboring Liberia and Sierra Leone, too.
Unfortunately, there are no disease-specific treatments for Ebola. Healthcare workers only supply the infected people with water to keep them in good condition. Since there have been many cases of nurses catching the disease from patients, they are forced to wear strict protective clothes, and in some cases, not even allowed to get close to the infected. The fact that there is no cure for the Ebola virus is what makes the outbreak a challenging one to control.

A.Ebola is naturally found in fruit

C.Ebola is a newly discovered disease
D.Ebola is recently controlled in Guinea

C.give water and medicine to the patients
D.do whatever they can to save the infected
4、The text probably comes from ________.

25.(10分) A dog found swimming more than 220 kilometers off the coast of Thailand has been returned safely to land.
Late last week, workers on an oil rig(钻井平台) noticed the animal, all alone, in the water. It began swimming toward the side of the rig. The dog was able to get itself onto a solid area.
He appeared cold, tired and fearful. The workers lowered a rope and secured it around the dog. Then, they worked together to pull the animal up to safety.
The crew that found the dog quickly gave their new friend a name: Boonrod. The name means something similar to ―one who survives in a disaster in the Thai language.
One of those workers was Vitisak Payalaw. He has been providing updates on Boonrod on his Facebook page. He said it was lucky that the crew noticed the dog in the water. If there had been waves, he said, the animal would not have been seen.
No one knows how Boonrod ended up all alone at sea, or how long he had been out there. But Vitisak and others have guessed the animal might have fallen off a fishing boat.
On Monday, Boonrod arrived on dry land. A team of animal doctors was waiting for him in the southern Thai province of Songkhla. Workers at the Songkhla port also welcomed the dog with neck rubs and a special ―welcome necklace made of yellow flowers. Many people took pictures with Boonrod.
Vitisak wrote on Facebook, ―Today (April 15), a ship transporting the dog arrived onshore at around 10.am. His overall condition has improved. He is getting stronger and can smile.
The dog is now in the care of an animal doctor in Songkhla. The animal protection group Watchdog Thailand said he is in good condition and getting stronger. On Tuesday, the group published pictures of Boonrod getting washed — and getting plenty of love and attention.
Vitisak says that if no one claims Boonrod as their pet, he will take him with him to his home in northeast Thailand.

24、 Kathy Fletcher and David Simpson have a son named Santi. He has a friend who sometimes goes to school hungry. So Santi invites him to occasionally eat and sleep at his house.
That friend has a friend and that friend has a friend, and now when you go to dinner at Kathy and David's house on Thursday night there might be 15 to 20 teenagers gathering around the table, and later there will be groups of them crashing in the basement or in the small bedrooms upstairs. The kids who show up at Kathy and David's have suffered the pains of modern poverty: homelessness, hunger and abuse.
And yet by some miracle, hostile soil has produced beautiful flowers. Kids come from around the city. Spicy chicken and black rice are served. Cellphones are banned. The kids who call Kathy and David“Momma”and “Dad”, are polite and do the dishes. Birthdays and graduations are celebrated. Songs are performed. At each meal they go around the table and everybody has to say something nobody else knows about him. At each meal the kids show their promise to care for one another.
The adults in this community give the kids the chance to present their gifts.“At my first dinner, Edd read a poem that I first thought was from Langston Hughes, but it turned out to be his own. Kesari has a voice that somehow appears from New Orleans jazz in the 1920s. Madeline and Thalya form a friendship as if it were the highest art form,”George said.
“They give us a gift—complete intolerance of social distance. When I first met Edd,I held out myhand to shake his. He looked at it and said, ‘We hug here', and we' ve been hugging since,”Kesari said.
Bill Milliken, a veteran youth activist, is often asked which programs turn around kids' lives. “I still haven't seen one program change one kid's life,”he says.“What changes people is the relationship. Somebody is willing to walk through the shadow of the valley of adolescence.”Souls are not saved in bundles. Love is the necessary force.

29、To reduce waste pollution and protect the ecological environment, the government has issued regulations to enforce garbage classification. However, in our community some residents don't seriously classify garbage so that they don't separated dry and wet garbage from domestic garbage, and recyclable garbage is not picked up. Even some residents don't litter in designated places.
In response to this situation, we should take appropriate measures. Firstly, the residents should be told what type of garbage belongs to help them classify garbage, and the benefits can they consciously classify garbage. Secondly, attach striking labels to trash cans to remind them to throw garbage. Last but not least, supervision and inspection is necessary.
I think only when the residents and the government cooperate with each other, the garbage can be classified and used to the best .
