第二部分 阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
21.(6分)We humans are sweet on sugar. That makes sense. All animals need sugar to live. It ' s the fuel that powers our cells. So it' s not surprising that we ' re born to want the sweet stuff.
Sugar stores the sun' s energy like a battery. After a meal, your body breaks down foods into their building blocks. It uses some sugars for energy right away. The rest get stored for the body to break down later. It ' s a myth that sugar makes you extremely excited, but having a sugary snack can give you a quick burst of energy. That ' s because the sugars in sweet foods are easy for your body to turn into fuel. When you eat other kinds of foods, like vegetables, it takes longer for your body to break the sugars down.
These days it' s easy to find sweet snacks. Sodas, candy, cakes and even foods that seem healthy , such as yogurt, can be packed with sugar. Food makers add sugar, because they know that to humans, sweet makes everything taste better. Americans eat about 20 teaspoons of extra sugar everyday. That' s way more than what is good for us.
Eating too much sugar can cause more than a stomach-ache. It can make people overweight, decay the teeth and even cause diabetes. However, experts aren ' t worried about naturally sweet foods- the problem is added sugar. So go ahead and enjoy a sweet apple or even a sugar-rich carrot that are also full of vitamins and other good stuff.
Even cake is great once in a while , as long as you don ' t overdo it. After all, no one wants life to be dull. And your body needs its fuel!

23.(8分)Crossing your legs is an extremely common habit; most people don’t even notice that they’re doing it when they sit down. While you may find it comfortable to sit with one knee crossed over the other, it might be causing health problems that you are not aware of.
A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. The reason this happens is because the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to be pumped back to your heart, crossing one leg over the other increases resistance, making it even harder for the blood to circulate. This causes your body to increase your blood pressure to push the blood back to the heart.
Crossing your legs can also lead to neck and back pain. When you sit with your legs crossed, your hips are in a twisted position, which can cause one of your pelvic (骨盆的) bones to rotate. Since your pelvic bone supports your neck and spine, this can cause pressure on your lower and middle back and neck.
You also might notice that when you sit with your legs crossed for long periods of time, your feet and legs get tingly or have the feeling of being asleep. This is because when one leg sits on top of the other, it causes pressure on the veins (血管) and nerves in your legs and feet. It can cause numbness and/or temporary paralysis in the legs, ankles, or feet.
So next time you sit down, try to get yourself in the habit of sitting with both of your feet on the floor. Not only will it help your posture and stability, but it will also save your health in the long run.
1、Crossing legs may lead to the following health problems except ________.
A.It can increase your blood pressure
B.It can cause pressure on your lower and middle back and neck
C.It will make your neck and spine twisted
D.It can cause paralysis for the time being
2、Why can crossing your legs increase your blood pressure?
A.Because the blood in your legs has to work against being pumped back to your heart.
B.Because it will prevent the blood circulating.
C.Because crossing legs results in less resistance for the blood to circulate.
D.Because higher blood pressure contributes to pushing the blood back to the heart.
3、What is the purpose of writing this article?
A.To persuade us not to cross our legs any longer.
B.To make us aware of the health problems caused by crossing legs.
C.To tell us the benefits of sitting with our feet on the floor.
D.To show that crossing legs is an extremely common habit.
24.(8分)The organic food has gained a lot of [popularity as they are being considered as healthier and tastier. A fair number of people advocate a large-scale shift to organic farming from conventional agriculture. But this might not seem well-founded.
Since the mid-19th century, conventional industrial agriculture has become incredibly efficient on a simple land to food basis. Conventional farming gets more and more crop per square foot of land, which can mean less wilderness needs to be transformed to farmland.
To make farming more efficient, conventional agriculture uses a significant amount of synthetic fertilizer(合成肥料)each year, and all that nitrogen(氮)enables much faster plant growth. However, the cost is paid in vast polluted dead zones at the months of many of the world’s rivers, because much of the nitrogen ends up running off the soil and into the oceans. This also makes conventional farming one of the major threats to the environment.
To weaken the environmental impact of agriculture, improve soil quality as well as produce healthier foods, some farmers have turned to organic farming. Environmentalists have also welcomed organic food as better for the planet than the food produced by agricultural corporations. Organic practices --- refusing artificial fertilizers and chemical pesticides –are considered far more sustainable. Sales of organic food rose 7.7% in 2010, up to $26.7 billion—and people are making those purchases for their moral senses as much as their tongues.
Yet a new meta-analysis in Nature does the math and comes to a hard conclusion: organic farming produces 25% fewer crops on average than conventional agriculture.
In the Nature analysis, scientists performed an analysis of 66 studies comparing conventional and organic methods across 34 different crop species, from fruits to grains. They found that organic farming delivered a lower output for every crop type, though the difference varied widely. For crops like fruit trees, organic trailed(落后于)conventional agriculture by just 5%. Yet for major grain crops and vegetables – all of which provide the world’s main calories – conventional agriculture outperformed organics by more than 25%.
What that means is that while organic farming may be more sustainable than conventional agriculture, there are trade-offs(此消彼长)with each. So an ideal global agriculture system may borrow the best from both systems rather than upholding merely organic or conventional practices.
1、What’s the author’s purpose of writing the passage?
A.To compare two types of farming.
B.To criticize conventional agriculture.
C.To discuss the development of farming.
D.To argue for a realistic agriculture system.
2、What do we know about conventional farming?
A.It produces more crops with fewer fertilizers.
B.It achieves efficiency at a huge cost to the environment.
C.If offers a long-term solution to global demand for food.
D.It performs far better for each crop type than organic farming.
3、What does the author most probably agree with?
A.Employing organic farming to plant rice.
B.Adopting organic practices to grow potato.
C.Using conventional methods to plant cabbage.
D.Applying conventional farming to growing apple.
4、Which of the following shows the development of ideas in this passage?
CP: Central Point P: Point Sp: Sub-point(次要点) C: Conclusion

Can you understand this sentence? If you can’t, don’t feel too bad: neither could the middle school teacher in England who received this as homework. This is Netspeak: the language of computerized communication found on the Internet or cellphones. To newcomers, it can look like a completely foreign language.
School teachers and parents say this new form of writing is harming (破坏) the English language. Increasing spelling and grammatical mistakes can be seen in students’ writing. They fear the language could become corrupted (面目全非的).
Everyone should just relax, say linguists (语言学家). They believe Netspeak is in fact more of a good thing. David Crystal, from the University of Wales, argues that Netspeak and Internet create a new language use and the almost lost art of diary writing has been picked up again. Geoffrey Nurnberg, from Stanford University, agrees. “People get better at writing by writing,” he says. “Kids who are now doing text messaging, e-mail, and instant messages will write at least as well as, and possibly better than, their parents.”
Linguist James Milroy says, for centuries, it is believed without exception that young people are harming the language. And when today’s teenagers become tomorrow’s parents, they too will think this way. Milroy argues that languages do not and cannot become “corrupted”; they simply change to meet the new needs.
However, Netspeakers do agree that it is important to teach young people how to speak and write Standard English. Cynthia McVey says, “I can understand Netspeak worries teachers and it’s important that they tell their pupils that text messaging is for fun, but that learning to write proper English is a must for their future.”
1、What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A.To give the main idea. B.To raise a question.
C.To compare an example. D.To lead in the topic.
2、Who can understand the Netspeak in England?
A.Middle school teachers. B.Parents.
C.Linguistics. D.Teenagers.
3、Who believes Netspeak users can help improve writing?
A.Cynthia McVey B.David Crystal
C.Geoffrey Nurnberg D.James Milroy
4、What’s James Milroy’s attitude toward Netspeak?
A.Positive. B.Negative.
C.Doubtful. D.Worried.
5、What can be the best title for the passage?
A.Netspeak: the Language on the Internet
B.Is Netspeak Helpful in Language Learning?
C.Is Netspeak Harming the English Language?
D.Netspeak: Advantages and Disadvantages
