Constantin de Slizewicz has been anxious to come back to China since early 2020.For the past decade, the Frenchman has been running a luxurious (豪华的)camping business in Shangri-La in the southwest of China's Yunnan Province. But in December 2019, he went back to France for a vacation. He usually goes back to France and stays there for two to three months, since there is little business due to the weather.
Following the outbreak of COVID-19, however, he found it difficult to return. Fortunately, his business partner Guillaume de Penfentenyo was able to get a flight to China at the end of February.
Previously, most of his customers were international guests from outside the country who were drawn to the beautiful landscape and scenery in Shangri-La. Despite the pandemic(疫情)and even in his absence, Slizewicz's company managed to attract new tourists, who were unable to travel abroad under the circumstances and discovered the joy of camping. "It makes sure of our operation," he says happily.
Last year, his team offered summer camps in Shangri-La for Chinese students who couldn't travel abroad. In autumn, many domestic travelers also signed up for his company's organized adventures deep into the wilderness.
Slizewicz first visited China in 1996 when he engaged in a three-month internship(实习期). He was impressed by the Chinese people around him and was attracted by places like Guizhou and Yunnan provinces, which were well-matched to his interest in camping-a passion he has had since childhood. "I met people in the mountains, singing and herding their yaks(牦牛). That makes the mountains feel special and alive,” he says.
4. In which season does Slizewicz usually take a break?
A. In spring. B. In winter. C. In autumn. D. In summer.
5. Who were Slizewicz's main customers before the pandemic?
A. Chinese students. B. Visitors from France. C. Local people. D. Visitors outside China.
6. How does Slizewicz feel about his business?
A. Surprised. B. Thankful. C. Satisfied. D. Doubtful.
7. What's the main reason for Slizewicz's running a camping business?
A. His interest. B. The friends around him.
C. The popularity of camping. D. The peaceful life in mountains.
B 5. D 6. C 7. A
根据第一段“But in December 2019, he went back to France for a vacation.(但是,他在2019年12月回到法国去度假)”可知,他通常在冬天回去度假。
根据第三段“Previously, most of his customers were international guests from outside the country who were drawn to the beautiful landscape and scenery in Shangri-La. (以前,他的大多数顾客都是来自国际客人,来自中国以外的被香格里拉美丽风景吸引的人)”可知疫情之前的客人主要来自国外。故选D。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Despite the pandemic(疫情)and even in his absence, Slizewicz's company managed to attract new tourists, who were unable to travel abroad under the circumstances and discovered the joy of camping. "It makes sure of our operation," he says happily. (尽管疫情和他的缺席,他的公司成功地吸引了新的游客,他们在疫情下不能去国外旅游,发现了露营的乐趣。‘这确保了我们的运营’他高兴地说)”可知,他对公司目前的发展是满意的。故选C。

C
The good news is that more people bought electric vehicles (EVs) in 2020. The bad news is that sport utility (多用途的) vehicles (SUVs) continued to grow in popularity, too. “The fall in oil consumption due to the first trend was completely canceled out by the second,” said Laura Cozzi, an officer at the International Energy Agency (JEA).
Between 2010 and 2020, global carbon dioxide emissions (排放) from conventional cars fell by nearly 35 billion tons, due to reasons such as fuel efficiency improvements as well as the switch to electric cars. Emissions from SUVs rose by more than 50 billion tons. “While the growth in EVs is encouraging, the boom in SUVs is heart-breaking,” says Peters at the Cicero Climate Research Centre in Norway.
There are many reasons for the growing popularity of SUVs. For example, rising economic boom in many countries means more people are able to afford them. Some people see them as status symbols. Also, SUVs are heavily advertised by car-makers, whose profit is higher on these vehicles. Some countries, including France, have introduced plans under which more taxes are paid on heavier cars. But Peters thinks that people who are rich enough to afford SUVs won’t be deterred by slightly higher taxes. “There are now some electric SUVs available, but I hope one day you will see more electric vehicles brought to the SUV market,” says Peters.
Even if it happens, switching to electric SUVs isn’t a good solution. Due to their size and bigger batteries, it takes more resources to build electric SUVs, and they consume around 15 percent more electricity. That means higher emissions unless the electricity comes entirely from renewable sources, and higher electricity demand makes it harder to green the electricity supply.
8. What can we infer from Paragraph 2?
A. Scientists should devote themselves to improving fuel efficiency.
B. Electric vehicles will certainly take the place of sport utility vehicles.
C. The popularity of SUVs destroys some efforts at environmental protection.
D. The emission of carbon dioxide of motor vehicles has hit a new low.
9. What does the underlined word “deterred” probably mean?
A. Encouraged. B. Blocked.
C. Removed. D. Connected.
10. What is one of the reasons that SUVs are popular with consumers?
A. SUVs are discounted heavily.
B. SUVs are often advertised by car producers.
C. SUVs are taxed at a lower rate in some countries.
D. SUVs consume fewer resources than other vehicles.
11. What point does the author try to make in the last paragraph?
A. The electric SUVs should be made smaller and lighter.
B. The electric SUVs are a good guarantee for less pollution.
C. More electric SUVs don’t necessarily mean “environment-friendly”.
D. Future electric SUVs will be powered with completely green energy.
C 9. B 10. B 11. C
根据第二段“Between 2010 and 2020, global carbon dioxide emissions (排放) from conventional cars fell by nearly 35 billion tons, due to reasons such as fuel efficiency improvements as well as the switch to electric cars. Emissions from SUVs rose by more than 50 billion tons. “While the growth in EVs is encouraging, the boom in SUVs is heart-breaking,” says Peters at the Cicero Climate Research Centre in Norway.
根据第三段划线词前“Some countries, including France, have introduced plans under which more taxes are paid on heavier cars.(包括法国在内的一些国家已经出台了对重型汽车征收更多税款的计划)”可知,一些国家通过增加税收来减少对重型汽车的购买,再结合划线词所在句中“who are rich enough (足够富有的)”和“by slightly higher taxes (被稍微高点的税收)”可知,此处是讲买得起SUV的富人不会被略高的税收所阻止。
根据第三段中“Also, SUVs are heavily advertised by car-makers, whose profit is higher on these vehicles. (此外,SUV被汽车制造商大量宣传,他们在这些汽车上的利润更高)”可知,汽车生产商经常为SUV做广告是SUV受到消费者欢迎的原因之一。故选B项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Even if it happens, switching to electric SUVs isn’t a good solution. Due to their size and bigger batteries, it takes more resources to build electric SUVs, and they consume around 15 percent more electricity. That means higher emissions unless the electricity comes entirely from renewable sources, and higher electricity demand makes it harder to green the electricity supply.(即使发生了这种情况,切换到电动SUV也不是一个好的解决方案。由于它们的尺寸和更大的电池,制造电动SUV需要更多的资源,它们消耗大约15%的电力。这意味着,除非电力完全来自可再生能源,否则排放会增加,而更高的电力需求使电力供应更加绿色)”可推知,最后一段中作者想表达的是:由于制造电动SUV需要更多的资源,所以更多的电动SUV并不一定意味着“环保”。故选C项。
D
Computers have become amazingly exact at translating spoken words to text messages and searching a large supply of valuable information for answers to difficult questions. At least, that is, so long as you speak English or other world's main languages. But try talking to your phone in Yoruba, Igbo or any number of widely spoken African languages and you'll find difficulty in accessing information, trade and other benefits of the global tech economy.
American tech giants don't have a long history of making their language technology work well outside the wealthiest markets, a problem that has also made it harder for them to discover dangerous misinformation on their platforms. Google, for instance, upset members of the Yoruba community when its language app mistranslated a nice African god as a devil. Part of the reason is that there's just not enough online data in those languages for the Al systems to effectively learn how to get better at understanding them.
“We are getting to the point where if a machine doesn't understand your language, it will be like it never existed,” said Vukosi Marivate, who has devoted some of his Al research to the southern African languages of Xitsonga and Setswana. “Considering our history, some of the bias (偏见) is intentional. The history of the African continent and in general in colonized (殖民化的) countries, is that when language had to be translated, it was translated in a very narrow way,” Marivate added.
However, Google and Microsoft are among the companies that say they are trying to improve technology for so-called "low-resource" languages that Al systems don't have enough data for. Computer scientists at Meta announced a breakthrough on the path to a "universal translator" that could translate multiple languages at once and work better with lower-resourced languages. Meanwhile, Marivate and other researchers have founded a research project across Africa. Increasingly, people are joining hands to develop a variety of language approaches.
12. What can we learn from Paragraphs 1 and 2?
A. Yoruba and Igbo are widely spoken in the world.
B. English speakers fail to access online information.
C. The online data of African languages is limited.
D. Computers can translate all text messages exactly.
13. Why does the author mention “Google” in Paragraph 2?
A. To make a prediction. B. To draw a comparison.
C. To reach a conclusion. D. To give an example.
14. What is Marivate's attitude towards “American tech giants”?
A. Friendly. B. Unconcerned. C. Dissatisfied. D. Proud.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Joint Efforts to Improve AI in African Languages B. Computers Good at Translating Spoken Language
C. US Tech Giants Misunderstand African Languages D. African Researchers Exchange Ideas with Tech Giants
C 13. D 14. C 15. A

根据文章第二段“Google, for instance, upset members of the Yoruba community when its language app mistranslated a nice African god as a devil. (例如,谷歌的语言应用程序把一个善良的非洲神误译为魔鬼,这让约鲁巴社区的成员感到不安。)”可推断,作者在第二段提到“谷歌”是给出一个具体的例子。故选D。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段“"We are getting to the point where if a machine doesn't understand your language, it will be like it never existed," said Vukosi Marivate, who has devoted some of his AI research to the southern African languages of Xitsonga and Setswana. "Considering our history, some of the bias is intentional. The history of the African continent and in general in colonized countries, is that when language had to be translated, it was translated in a very narrow way," Marivate added. (“如果一台机器不懂你的语言,它就会像从未存在过一样,” Vukosi Marivate说。他将自己的一些人工智能研究投入到了非洲南部的希特松加语和塞茨瓦纳语上。“考虑到我们的历史,有些偏见是故意的。非洲大陆和其他殖民地国家的历史表明,当语言必须被翻译时,翻译的方式非常狭隘。”)”可推断,Marivate对“美国科技巨头”的态度是不满意的。故选C。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第一段“But try talking to your phone in Yoruba, Igbo or any number of widely spoken African languages and you'll find difficulty in accessing information, trade and other benefits of the global tech economy.(但试着用约鲁巴语、伊博语或任何广泛使用的非洲语言与手机通话,你会发现难以获取信息、贸易和全球科技经济带来的其他好处。)根据最后一段“Increasingly, people are joining hands to develop a variety of language approaches.”(人们越来越多地联合起来开发各种语言方法。)所以“Joint Efforts to Improve Al in African Languages(共同努力提高非洲语言的人工智能)”作为文章标题最为合适。故选A。

As a sixth grader, I began noticing how other kids were separating into different groups in the class. There were the geeks, the jocks (小丑) , and the popular cool kids. I wasn’t sure where I belonged. And I think that was a problem.
Our teacher had assigned “secret friends” for the coming week. The purpose of this assignment was to do nice things for your friend without letting them know who was doing it. We could leave encouraging notes on their desk or mysteriously leave a card in their backpack or book. Our teacher wrote each kid’s name on a piece of paper and threw them into a bucket, then we each closed our eyes and drew the name of the classmate who we were to secretly befriend and support over the next five school days.
Everyone was excited to get involved, including Rochelle. By the middle of the week, we had turned this assignment into a contest to see whose secret friend could leave the best gift. Instead of encouraging notes, we left stationary sets on our friend’s desk. Instead of giving compliments, we were giving bubble gum, lollipops and even money. It seemed that everyone was getting cool presents from their friends. Everyone except me, that is.
My secret friend followed our teacher’s directions without a fault. I received handmade cards, notes with nice thoughts and countless smiley face pictures saying that I was one of the nicest girls in the class. This friend seemed to think highly of me from the notes that were left, but the lack of gifts kept me wondering what was up with whoever had pulled my name.
On the last morning of our assignment, I walked into my classroom and noticed a package on my desk. At last, my secret friend had grasped the idea that a gift was what I really needed. I quickly ripped open the gift paper, only to find a small doll inside. The pink wool-knit doll seemed not new but delicate. But the girls sitting near me giggled and gossiped about the “little girl” gift I had received.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

It turned out that my secret friend was Rochelle, coming from a poor family.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One Possible Version:
Hearing this, I felt my face turn red. Embarrassed and ashamed, I secretly complained that the girl gave me so stupid a gift to arouse others’ derision. I even joined other girls in gossiping about my secret friend and the poor doll. When I continued with mean remarks, a girl sitting at the last row arose and came up, casting me an angry and disappointed look. With tears streaming down her face, she admitted, “I’m your secret friend and I’m sorry about the gift.” Then she ran out of the classroom. Frozen with shock, I couldn’t utter a single word.
It turned out that my secret friend was Rochelle, coming from a poor family. She had saved every penny in her pocket money in order to give me a cool gift. With the limited money, she visited a lot of stores and finally selected the lovely doll from a second-hand store. Actually, she gave me a most valuable gift with her sincere heart. However, I didn’t treasure and hurt her badly in such a cruel way. So ashamed was I that it took me a few days to pluck up my courage to face up to Rochelle and apologize. Much to my delight, she forgave me and later we became best friends. Most importantly, we found where we belonged.
