(2022·广西北部湾)When I was in Grade 8, I had a heated argument(争吵)with my classmate, Tony. I have forgotten what the argument was about, but I have never forgotten the lesson I learned that day.
I believed that I was right and he was wrong, and Tony believed that I was wrong and he was right. Our teacher, a kind and smart lady, decided to teach us a lesson. She brought us to the front of the class and placed him on one side of her desk and me on the other. In the middle of her desk was a large and round object. I could clearly see that it was black. The teacher asked us what color the object was. “White,” Tony answered. I couldn’t believe he said the object was white! “Clearly, it was black!” Another argument started between Tony and me, this time about the color of the object.
The teacher told me to go and stand where Tony was standing and told him to go and stand where I was standing. We changed places, and now she asked me what color the object was. I had to answer, “White.” It was an object with two differently colored sides—from his side it was white, while from my side it was black. “Boys, now, what do you say?” The teacher smiled at us. Tony has been my best friend ever since.
My teacher taught me a very important lesson that day: When you disagree with others, you’d better be in their shoes. That will help you look at the situation through their eyes, and truly understand their ideas and ways of thinking.

(2022·广西北部湾)①Walk or drive to work? Which way is lower in carbon(碳)? To be friendly to the environment, you may choose to walk. Have you ever tried to live a low-carbon life through your diet(日常饮食)?
②A new study from the University of Oxford has looked into the health and environmental influences of 15 foods common in western diets. Among these, plant-based(基于植物的)foods included fruits, vegetables, nuts and potatoes. It also studied animal-based foods, including red meat, chicken, milk products, eggs and fish.
③According to the study’s lead researcher, Michael Clark, “Choosing better and greener diets is one of the main ways people can improve their health and protect the environment.” That is to say, plant-based diets are much healthier for us and kinder to the environment.
④To get this result, researchers compared the influence of eating another portion(一份)of each food with the increased risk of a few illnesses. They also find out the environmental harm for each animal-based food and each plant-based food.
⑤By using this method, the study found that red meats were the most unfriendly foods to the environment. Keeping farm animals produces a large number of methane(甲烷)that keeps 30 times more heat than CO2. As well as making the earth warmer, eating too much red meat is known to increase the risk of a few illnesses, such as heart trouble.
⑥Plant-based diets can give us the same health benefits in a much greener way. According to the study, without eating or using meat and milk products, global farmland use could be cut down by more than 75% and still feed the world.
⑦Speaking to the Guardian, Tim Benton of Chatham House said, “If we can give people reasonable official advice of what a healthy and green diet is, the world and its people would be in a much better place.”

(2021·广西北部湾)I usually took a bus to school. I found that most passengers were silent and never had a conversation with anyone else.
About a year ago, an old man got on the bus and said loudly to the driver, “Good morning!”Most people looked up, wondering why, and the bus driver didn’t take it seriously and just replied in a cold voice, “Mm - hmm”The next day the man got on and again he said in a loud voice, “Good morning!” to the driver. Another “Mm - hmm”. By the fifth day, the driver finally answered him with a little happy “Good morning!” Then the man said, “My name is Benny.” The driver told the man that he was Sam.
That was the first time any of us had heard the driver’s name and soon people began to talk to each other and say hello to Sam and Benny. Soon Benny spread his happy “Good morning!” to the whole bus. Within a few days, his “Good morning!” was returned by a lot of “Good mornings” and the whole bus seemed to be friendlier. People got to know each other.
“Benny truly showed friendship among us with a simple ‘Good morning!’,” I thought.
Then suddenly, Benny stopped showing up. Everyone began to ask about Benny, wondering what happened to him. No one knew what to do and the bus got quiet again. So, last week, I started to act like Benny and say “Good morning!” to everyone and the whole bus cheered up again. Hopefully, Benny could come back to see his “Good morning!” mattered a lot.
Sometimes we see some strangers so many times that we know their faces well, but we never even say hello to them. By saying hello, friendship starts to grow, and sunshine comes to the world around us, and love spreads over the community we are in. Why not start a “hello” today?

(2021·广西北部湾)Do you like writing by hand or with a keyboard?
A new brain research, led by researchers at Norwegian University of Science and Technology, shows that choosing handwriting instead of using a keyboard results in better learning and memory.
“When you write your shopping list or class notes by hand, you simply remember what you wrote better later, ” said Audrey van der Meer, who did the study.
12 young grown - ups and 12 children took part in the study. This is the first time that children have taken part in such a study. Special machines were used to follow and record brain wave (电波) activity. Each person wore a special cap with over 250 electrodes (电极) on the head, and was asked to write by hand and use a keyboard. The sensors (传感器) in the electrodes picked up the activity that took place in the brain. Each examination took 45 minutes for each person.
The results showed that the brain in both young grown - ups and children is much more active when writing by hand than when using a keyboard. According to Van der Meer, plenty of senses become active by holding a pen and pushing it down on paper, seeing the letters written and hearing the sound made while writing. These build connection between different parts of the brain, opening the brain up for learning.
Van der Meer believes that the results call attention to the importance of children being asked to draw and write at an early age, especially at school. “Learning to write by hand is a bit slower course, but it’s important for children to experience the tiring step of learning to write by hand,” she said.
The hand movements used to form the shapes of letters are helpful in several ways. “If you use a keyboard, you use the same movement for each letter. Writing by hand requires control of your fine motor (精细动作) skills and senses. It’s important to put the brain in a learning condition as often as possible,” Van der Meer added. For example, you might use a keyboard to write an article, but you should take notes by hand during a class.

President Xi Jinping said "clear waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets(绿水青山就是金山银山)". With the efforts of China's government and its people, the rate of forest coverage(森林覆盖率)in China has reached 22. 96%, compared to 5. 05% forty years ago, according to a recent report from the State Forestry and Grassland Administration (SFGA).
Over the past forty years, China planted billions of trees as part of its fight against expanding(延伸的)deserts, mostly in its north. Each year, people sow seedlings(播种)over an area nearly the size of Ireland, according to Nature.
In 1978, China began a nationwide tree-planting programme known as the Three North Shelterbelt Forest Programme, also known as "the Great Green Wall". It has helped to plant more than 66 billion trees across 13 provinces in the country's north to act as windbreaks(防风林), according to China Daily.
Since 2018, SFGA has made more efforts to build a greener country. Its purpose is to grow at least 6. 7 million hectares(公顷)of forest every year in the next 15 years. May 15th, SundayIt’s Mother’s Day today. In the morning, my brother and I woke up early and cooked breakfast for mum. This doesn’t happen often.
I only knew how to cook eggs. That was enough for breakfast! I cut up some bananas and apples, then my brother put them together with eggs and bread in a dish. After that we made tea. Finally, we got the meal ready!
The tea was too sweet and the eggs were a little burned. The meal wasn’t perfect, but mum ate all of it with a smile. My brother and I also made a card together. Mum read it and said, “It’s beautiful. Thank you so much. I love you two!” “I love you, mum,” we said. I felt warm and happy.
