Chuvina was 56 when she discovered knife throwing in 2007. She’d landed a simple job in the coat check
section of the local pool. One day, two young people came by to discuss the possibility of opening a knife
throwing club there. It was the first time that Chuvina had heard of knife throwing, so she decided to have a try
and signed up for training. Just a month and a half into her training, she learned that her hometown would soon
host a knife throwing competition. She signed up and shocked the audience by winning first place.
Her victory inspired many people, but there were also those who simply called it beginner’s luck. Chuvina
silenced the latter at the 2007 National Knife Throwing Championship in Moscow, where she beat the best knife
throwers in the country. Her very first prize had been a brand-new meat-grinder, but for her win at the nationals,
she received a mobile phone and an air mattress. This greatly motivated her to participate in more competitions.
In 2008, Chuvina competed in the World Knife Throwing Championship in Kaliningrad, against 36 of the
world’s best knife throwers. She was the only retiree among the participants, but she won once again, becoming
the world’s number one knife thrower.

great support from anyone, including the authorities. Chuvina stopped going to competitions mostly because she
couldn’t afford to travel.
Chuvina didn’t return to her old job at the local pool, and despite getting offers from parents to teach their
kids, these offers never materialized. Today, at age 68, she lives in a shabby house and makes ends meet on a
monthly pension of 17,000 rubles ($ 220).

Masks that helped save lives are proving a deadly danger to wildlife, with birds and sea creatures trapped in the
shocking number of thrown-away facial coverings. Single-use masks have been found around pavements, waterways and
beaches worldwide. Worn once, the thin protective materials can take hundreds of years to decompose. “Face masks aren’t
going away any time soon — but when we throw them away, these items can harm the environment and the animals,”
Ashley Fruno of animal rights group PETA said.
In Britain, a gull was rescued by the RSPCA after its legs became tangled in the straps (带子) of a mask for up to a
week. The animal welfare charity took it to a wildlife hospital for treatment before its release.
The biggest effect may be in the water. More than 1.5 billion masks made their way into the world’s oceans
last year, accounting for around 6,200 extra tonnes of ocean plastic pollution, according to environmental group
Oceans Asia.
Conservationists in Brazil found one mask inside the stomach of a penguin after its body was washed up on a
beach, while a dead puffer fish was discovered caught inside another off the coast of Miami. French campaigners
found a dead crab trapped in a mask near the Mediterranean.
Masks and gloves are “particularly problematic” for sea creatures, says George Leonard, chief scientist from
NGO Ocean Conservancy. “When those plastics break down in the environment, they then enter the food chain
and impact the entire ecosystems,” he added.

第 4 页(共 8 页)
There has been a shift towards greater use of reusable cloth masks as the pandemic (疫情) has worn on, but
many are still using the lighter single-use varieties. Campaigners have urged people to bin them properly and cut
the straps to reduce the risk of animals becoming trapped. Oceans Asia has also called on governments to increase
fines for littering and encourage the use of washable masks.
28. What does the underlined word “decompose” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Burn away.
B. Produce.
C. Break down.
D. Improve.
29. What can we learn from George Leonard’s words?
A. The environmental group saves many animals.
B. Sea wildlife is fond of feeding on face masks.
C. Measures should be taken to protect sea wildlife.
D. Masks thrown around finally do harm to human.
30. How might the mask problems be solved?
A. By increasing fines for throwing masks.
B. By preventing the public using single-use masks.
C. By working with campaigners’ groups.
D. By washing face masks frequently.
31. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
A. Wildlife Faces a Threat from Face Masks
B. Face Masks can Harm the Environment

Experts using a high-tech laser scanner (激光扫描仪) have discovered thousands of ancient Maya buildings
hidden under the thick forests of northern Guatemala, officials said Thursday. Some 60,000 buildings were found
over the past two years in a scan of an area in the northern department of El Peten between Mexico and Belize, said
Marcello Canuto, one of the projects’ lead researchers.
These findings are a “breakthrough in Maya archeology (考古学),” Canuto said.
The new discoveries in this CentralAmerican country include city centers with sidewalks, homes, wide steps, farming
facilities and so on, said Canuto, an archaeologist at Tulane University in the United States.
Among the finds was a 30-meter high pyramid (金字塔) that had been earlier recognized as a natural hill in
Tikal. Also discovered in Tikal: a series of holes and a 14 kilometer-long wall.
The Maya development reached its height in what is present-day southern Mexico, Guatemala, and parts of
Belize, El Salvador and Honduras between 250 and 950 CE. Researchers now believe that the Maya had a
population of 10 million, which is “much higher” than previous judgment, Canuto said.
The project depended on a remote (远程的) sensing method known as LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging).
Aircraft with a LiDAR scanner produced 3D maps of the surface by using light in the form of laser linked to a GPS
system.
The technology helped researchers discover sites much faster than using traditional archeological methods.
“Now it is no longer necessary to cut through the jungle to see what’s under it,” said Canuto.
Details of the research will appear in a documentary to air on February 11 on the National Geographic TV
channel, said Minister of Culture and Sports Jose Luis Chea.
32. What did Canuto think of the new discoveries in the past two years?
A. Leading.
B. Frightening.
C. Annoying.
D. Puzzling.
33. Which one is NOT LiDAR’s advantage?
A. It saves time in discovering site.
高二英语试卷
第 5 页(共 8 页)
B. It is more convenient for researchers to work in forest.
C. Explorers have to go deep into the jungle to research.
D. Research can be done at a distance.
34. According to the new discoveries, Maya might have been a nation ________.
A. that lay in Africa
B. that was less developed
C. whose pyramid was made of a hill
D. with a surprisingly large population
35. What is the author’s purpose of writing the text?
A. To inform readers of the new discoveries about Maya.
B. To introduce a new method used to discover Maya buildings.
C. To show Maya development was of great influence.
D. To tell us a new documentary will be launched on TV in Feb.
第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
An improvement in the immune system process would not be a good thing. It would mean your immune
system was overactive, and overactive immune systems can lead to some problems.
36 Don’t worry! Here are some basic steps you can take to ensure it is normal and thus functioning.
Get enough sleep. 37 It makes your body easier to get sick, as does an irregular sleep schedule. A
single night of only 4 to 5 hours of sleep causes your natural killer cells to drop by 70%. Increase your chances of
fending off illness by allowing yourself a solid 7 to 9 hours of shut-eye nightly.
Eat well. Fuel your body by eating a wide range of plant-based, fiber-rich, and colorfully varied foods. There
is no strong scientific evidence for any specific type of food being linked to better immune function, so you can
ignore the supplements (增补药) being marketed toward the coronavirus in particular.
38
Keep exercising. Exercise has many benefits. It helps to maintain immune health by getting white blood cells
moving through the body. 39 If you’re already feeling ill, however, you can continue exercising as long as
your symptoms are above the chest. If your conditions are further down, take a break for a few days.
40 This advice is everywhere these days, but don’t stop paying attention to it. Keep washing your hands!
It’s the simplest and most effective protection against catching unwanted bacteria. Think about reducing places for
bacteria to hide, such as under long fingernails and rings, either by wearing fewer of them or including in your
hand-scrubbing.
A. Practice good health habits.
B. Bury your bad habits in the water.
C. Yo u might want it to function normally.
D. It boosts feelings of well-being and happiness.
E. Little sleep is like a giant welcome mat for illnesses.
F. Focus on getting your nutrition from whole foods instead.
G. You are going to be good at containing and fighting it off.

参考范文:
Dear Lucy,
I am glad to receive your letter. In your letter, you mentioned that Chinese people prefer red
but you are at a loss about when to use it. Here, I will tell you something about it.
We like red because red stands for happiness and good fortune in our culture. Therefore, you
can see people wear red clothes and hang red lanterns during the Spring Festival. And the seniors
usually give their grandchildren lucky money in red envelopes. Besides, young couples are dressed
in red on their traditional weddings.
However, be sure to avoid wearing red clothes during some sad events, such as attending
funerals and visiting patients. It is not polite to do so. I hope my explanations will be of use for you.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Hua
听力材料
Text 1
M: What are you doing with that phone book?
4
W: I would like to fly to Atlanta for a few days. My boss told me to make the arrangements, and
he’ll pay me back. I’m looking for a travel agent.
M: Honestly, travel websites all offer much more competitive prices.
Text 2
M: Oh, man. This is awful! It’s raining outside. We were supposed to take the dogs to the park.
W: Don’t worry about it. We can do that another day. Maybe today, we can just stay home and do
some yoga.
Text 3
M: You’re late. Was the school bus delayed again?
W: No, I didn’t take it. My dad’s car was still in the garage. I kept my bike behind his car and I
couldn’t get it out till he left.
Text 4
M: Mary, a recent study on job interviews says the best meeting time is between 9:00 and 11:00 in
the morning, and the worst is after 3:00 in the afternoon.
W: Good news indeed. Mine is at 10:00 am.
M: Oh, you are lucky.
Text 5
W: Hi, Mike. I stopped by to see if you were still looking for a roommate to share your house. My
brother wants to move out.
M: Yep, I sure am. Ever since I cut back on my work hours to go to school, I’ve been really low on cash.
Text 6
M: You played tennis fairly well.
W: Thanks. So did you.
M: Do you often come here to play?
W: Not very often. I often play with other teachers in our school playground. What about you?
M: I come here twice a week. I used to play with my brother in a stadium near my home. But he
went abroad last month, so I have to find a new partner. I’m lucky enough to have such a good
player like you in the club.
W: Thanks again. So much for the break and another round?
M: OK. It’s your turn to serve the ball.
Text 7
M: Hi Maria, it’s James. I hear the school barbecue’s not on Wednesday now?
W: Yeah, that’s right. Everyone’s busy on that day, so it’ll be on Thursday.
M: Good. When does it start?
W: Well, that’s changed too. Instead of 7:15 it’ll be 6:30, because there’s a band booked for 7:45.
M: What kind of music? They had a rock band at the last barbecue.
W: This band will be even better. They do hip hop and their singer is from South Africa. He also
5
plays jazz but he’s not doing that at the barbecue.
M: Great! Where is the barbecue going to be?
W: You’ll never guess — next to the swimming pool! The school secretary only agreed because
we can’t use the garden this year, and there’s a match on the sports field.
M: Excellent! See you there.
W: Bye!
Text 8
M: What prompted you to pursue a career as a TV host?
W: Well, I had no idea I was going to be a TV host. I was actually thinking of going to work in
film production or for a talent agency. After college, I first worked for a publishing firm for
two years. But I never looked for this job, it found me.
M: You said you were shy growing up. Is it still hard for you to be in front of the camera?
W: Since I was very shy, my mom put me in acting classes to help me get over my shyness. I tried
it and then realized that I have no talent for acting. Well, I say I am still shy. I don’t tend to go
up and introduce myself to others. But at work I’m not shy at all, because I know everyone
there.
M: What do you like doing when you are free?
W: I like watching sports games. Actually, I am a great sportswoman. I do a lot of skiing and
skating during the winter and I play baseball in spring. I also play table tennis. But I think
swimming is my favorite sport.
Text 9
W: Hey, could you help me get something from the top shelf, please?
M: Sure, what do you need?
W: I need some paper for the printer. I’m not sure why it’s all the way up there. It’s usually on the
bottom shelf.
M: No problem. Here you are.
W: Thanks. Have we met before? I’ve been here for almost three years, and I don’t think I’ve seen
you around here before. I’m Betty Applegate, Mr. Wolf’s assistant.
M: Nice to meet you, Ms. Applegate. I’m Miles Chaplin. I just started in the accounting
department last week.
W: Oh, wonderful! So, how are you settling in?
M: Everyone is very friendly around here. At my last job, everybody was really competitive.
That’s why I left, actually. It’s refreshing (令人耳目一新的) to work in an environment where
people actually cooperate.
W: I think many people stay here because the atmosphere is so relaxed. I have to confess (承认)
that I made more money at my previous job, but I’m so much happier here. Some things are
just more important than money, you know?
6
M: I couldn’t agree more.
Text 10
W: It’s 3 pm. Time for news from The World of Medicine.
Does sitting make you sad? Australian researchers found that middle-aged women who sat for
over 7 hours a day were 47 percent more likely to show sense of depression than those who sat
for 4 hours or fewer. Those who engaged in no physical activity were 26 percent more likely to
have symptoms of depression 3 years later than those who exercise regularly. Sitting for long
periods has also been linked to heart disease.
How can you detect a liar through a text message? Watch for a delayed response. When
college students were asked to tell a lie during an interview with a computer, they took 10
percent longer on average to send a message and they did more editing than usual.
Can marriage beat cancer? Married people were 20 percent less likely to die from the disease
than those who were unmarried, according to a Harvard study of more than 730,000 people.
They were also more likely to get the disease detected (发现) at an earlier stage and receive
proper treatment. A husband or wife can urge you to seek medical help and support you during
tough chemical therapy (治疗), radiation (放射疗法) and other treatments.
