The Origin of Halloween
Halloween is said to originate from the Celtic festival（凯尔特节） called *Samhain（萨温节）. It was celebrated at the end of the harvest season and people would light bonfires（篝火） and don（穿上） costumes to scare off ghosts that were said to roam（漫游） the lands.

万圣节起源于古凯尔特人的萨温节。萨温节是古凯尔特人的新年。萨温节的意思是“夏天的结束”，一般是在十月底天气转冷的时候。萨温节标志着他们一年中最大的转折点——天气的变化，同时也是每个人生活的变化。凯尔特人相信这个神秘时刻打开了生者与亡灵的某种联系。凯尔特人相信死亡之神Samhain在10月31日的晚上会和鬼魂一起重返人间，寻找替身。因此他们燃点火炬，焚烧动物以作为死亡之神的献礼。还会用动物的头或皮毛做成的服饰打扮自己，发出古怪的声音，使死亡之神认不出自己，避过灾难。这就是今天万圣节化妆舞会的由来。过了当晚，鬼魂回到阴间，一切回复平静。萨温节的很多活动都和这种信仰有关，其中许多活动都已演变成了今天万圣节的风俗。

Customs of Halloween
In the past, children used to dress up as characters that were associated with the supernatural（超自然的）, like skeletons（骷髅）, goblins（小妖精）, witches（女巫）, and warlocks（术士）.Nowadays, children (and adults) dress up as anyone they like, e.g. comic book heroes（漫画英雄）, cartoon characters（卡通人物）, television personalities（电视明星）.

Wu Yu: Hey Jane, what do you know about Halloween? Jane: Oh, it’s a popular festival in North America. Wu Yu: We don’t really celebrate it in China. I know that it’s in October, right?Jane: Yes, October 31st. It’s a scary festival, but I think it’s fun!Wu Yu: What do people do on that day? Jane: Many people make their houses look scary. They may  turn off the lights and light candles. They sometimes also put things like spiders and ghosts around the doors and windows. 
Wu Yu: Wow, that sounds quite scary! Jane: It’s not that bad. Even little kids dress up as ghosts or black cats. They can also dress up as fun things like cartoon characters. Some parents join in the fun by dressing up, too!  Wu Yu: Do parents take their children around the neighborhood  to ask for candies and treats? Jane: Yeah. Kids say “Trick or treat!” at every house. This means that if you don’t give them a treat, they’ll play a trick on you! Wu Yu: It sounds like a really fun festival! I wonder if it’ll  ever become popular in China.

辨析: dress, wear, put on, have on与be in
dress “给某人穿衣服”, 其宾语是人或反身代词, 不是表示衣服等的名词。wear “穿着; 戴着”强调状态。put on “穿上; 戴着”强调动作。have on “穿着; 戴着”强调状态,不能用于被动语态。be in “穿着; 戴着”强调状态, 通常接表示颜色的名词。
③ “Trick or treat” means kids will play a trick on you if you don’t give them a treat.（教材P13）
treat作名词时意为“款待; 招待”。give sb. a treat意为“招待某人”。e.g. As a special treat, I’ll take you to my favourite restaurant. 我要带你到我最喜欢的餐馆去，这是个特别待遇。treat还可作动词, 意为“招待; 请（客）”。treat sb. to sth.意为“请某人吃某物; 用某物款待某人”。e.g. Let me treat you to some juice. 让我请你喝一些果汁。
