(2022·湖南长沙·一模)阅读下面短文, 根据短文内容回答问题。
How much do you know about English? It is an official (官方的) language of more than 50 countries and 250 to 300 million people speak it as a second language. Some say that half the world might (可能) be speaking it in 2050.
English is not the easiest language to learn—most of its common verbs are irregular and it has a large vocabulary—at least 200, 000 words are in common use. Its pronunciation and written form are also very different.
But some things make it easy—nouns don’t have gender (性) and verbs are less complicated (复杂的) than those of other languages. There is only one form to speak to someone directly—“you”. Adjectives don’t agree with nouns, and many nouns are also verbs.
English is always changing. Around 25, 000 new words and expressions come into the English language every year. Do you know what a “helicopter (直升机) parent” is? It is a mother or father who is too involved (参与的) in the life of their child. And what about a “boomerang child”? It is an adult who returns to live with their parents for financial (经济的) reasons.
1.Is English an official language?

Zhou Jiangtao passed away at only 17 years old. He got bone cancer when he was 13. Four days before the announcement of his death, he asked to donate his organs (器官). “I do know the pain of suffering from disease and the helplessness of having no cure (治愈方法) …I’ve seen so much sadness and regret and want to offer help.”
On the day he ‘‘left’’, two patients who had been waiting for cornea transplants (角膜移植) were told they would get donations. Zhou’s body was moved to Zhejieng University School of Medicine on the same day.
It has been 12 years since China started a national pilot (试点) programme for human organ donation. According to the China Organ Donation Administrative Center, about 300,000 people across China arc waiting for life-sustaining (维持生命的) organ transplants, but only 20, 000 receive transplants each year.
In recent years, organ donation and transplantation have gotten more public support in China. As of April 2, more than 4. 62 million people had signed up (登记) for organ donation, said the center. As many as 75 people can benefit from a single donor (捐献者). There’s no age limit to donation, while people under 18 need a guardian’s consent (监护人同意).
In China, there are some deeply rooted traditions about the bodies of dead people. For example, many believe the body is a gift from one’s parents. So, they think dead bodies must be kept complete.
But many others have changed their beliefs. Donating organs is a way to help others and extend (延展) the meaning of one’s life. Increased willingness has been seen among young and
middle-aged people, noted People’s Daily. “Dedication (奉献) makes life more precious (宝贵的) than oneself,” Zhou once said.

Thanks to a program, 99-year-old Mary Macdonald and high school student Jane Brown got to know each other and became friends.
COVID-19 has changed people’s lives in many countries, and Canada is one of them. In the country, some old people are unable to meet with families as often and students have difficulties getting the volunteer hours they need for graduation. That’s why the program that connects the elderly with young people was born. For students taking part in the program, they can spend time with old people and count it as volunteer hours, but they must talk to the elderly over the Internet or phone for at least 30 minutes each week.
When Mary learned of the program, she signed up (报名). Mary was paired up with 17-year-old Jane because they shared a common interest—nursing. Mary used to be a nurse and spent most of her life living in other parts of the world to help those in need. She told Jane many stories about her work around the world, which encouraged Jane to achieve her dream of becoming a nurse and seeing other countries.
The program is a win-win for them. Jane enjoys talking with her new friend and they have even met in person. “I feel lucky to be friends with someone who has 99, almost 100, years of experience,” said Jane. “I love to talk to Mary every week. It makes me realize I don’t have to limit (限制) myself to one thing. And without doubt, Mary is an inspiration to me.” “We’ll learn from each other and I hope to keep the friendship going,” Mary said.

When Wang Haiyan was young, her favorite toy wasn’t Barbie dolls. Instead, she started learning to make shadow puppets(皮影戏偶)from her father at 13. Now 43, Wang has spent 30 years practicing and spreading the art.
Shadow puppetry is a form of theater that use puppets made from leather(皮)or paper, accompanied(伴奏)by music and singing. It was invented during the Western Han Dynasty(206 BC-AD24). It tells us about folk tales and historical stories, passing down culture and customs over thousands of years.
Shadow puppetry is all about creating the puppets and performing with them. Wang’s hometown of Hua county(县), Shaanxi, is known as the birthplace of the folk art.

She used a brick(砖)to make her left hand more powerful while practicing. It takes about 3,000 carves to make a shadow puppet. “The complex(复杂的)steps make it hard to hand down the folk art,” she said.

How I wished I had some with me! “William, the monkeys are taking long to come out today. Wait till they smell the peanuts. ” I knew he was lost in one of his memories again. I remembered the stories he told me of how he fed the monkeys when he was a kid. Then, he saw the goldfish! He acted as if he was seeing them for the first time.
Poor Grandpa! He fell ill with Alzheimer’s disease (阿尔茨海默症) last year. The doctor said it was a progressive brain disorder which could destroy (破坏) a person’s memory. The patient might also not be able to make reasonable judgments (判断). The saddening part was that it was a lifelong disease. My parents were worried about his disease, so they planned to bring him to live with us. But when my parents invited him to stay with us, he refused and said he liked living alone. One day, he forgot to turn off the fire after cooking porridge. Luckily, one of the neighbors came to help him before the fire could spread.
It was then that my parents brought Grandpa to live with us for his safety. Often, he would forget my name and ask me who I was and what I was doing in his house. Each time I would answer softly, “It’s me, Ray, Grandpa!” Even if he had forgotten who I was, he would always be my beloved grandfather.

Passage7
(2022·江苏扬州·一模)My father loves his garden. He planted some seeds in it. But at that time, I didn’t understand why working in the dirt excited him so much.
Unluckily, in early May, my father was seriously hurt in an accident. He had to stay in bed for a while. I didn’t want my father to worry, so I said that I would take care of his garden until he was well. I thought that the little plants would continue to grow as long as they had water, and luckily it rained very often, so I didn’t think much about the garden.
One Saturday morning, my father said to me, “Christine, the vegetables should be about ready to be picked. Let’s have a salad today!” I went out to the garden and was sad to see that many of the lettuce leaves and carrots had been half eaten by bugs (虫子). There were hundreds of bugs all over them! I had no choice but to go to the nearest store to buy some vegetables.
When I gave the salad to him, he said, “Oh, Christine, what a beautiful salad! I can’t believe the carrots are this big already. You must be taking very good care of my garden.” I felt a bit guilty. After that, I looked after the garden carefully, and weeks later I was finally able to pick some.
I carefully made a salad and took it to my father. He looked at it with a smile. “My good girl, the carrots are smaller in this salad, but they taste better.”
Now, I better understand how putting a lot of effort into caring for something can help you enjoy the results more, however small they may be. Perhaps this was one of the reasons for my father’s love of gardening.
