    (一)(2022·上海宝山·二模)

There are a number of different places to eat in the Sunshine Shopping Centre. The Northern House is small, but very popular. The noodle soup tastes very good. Everything is clean and the staff are friendly. Prices are good too, but you may have to wait quite a long time as the restaurant is so busy.
The Rome Hut is a new restaurant. It is very smart, but the pizzas here do not taste good. We did not eat our fish as it smelt bad. The waiters looked angry and we thought it was expensive. This restaurant needs to be improved.
The Tokyo Restaurant has been here for many years and the staff bow(鞠躬) to customers when they enter and are very polite. The fish is very fresh and most of the food is delicious. The amount of food you get is quite small but it always looks nice on the plate.
The Golden Dragon is a large Chinese restaurant. It has a lot of different food. The sweet and sour pork is excellent, the Beijing Duck is famous, and the winter melon soup is good. Go there for a really good meal but expect to pay a lot. Prices are high.
The Come in Coffee Shop is very modern. There are many kinds of coffee and if you like sweet things wait until you taste their cakes and cookies! You can also have sandwiches — I enjoyed the egg sandwich a lot. They have modern music playing, but it is often very noisy, so it is quite difficult to have a good conversation.

    Discussion topic
    >>> Is the Clean Hong Kong campaign(运动)working?
    LittleBug 88:
My dad had to pay a $1500 fine today for throwing a cigarette butt on the ground. An officer caught him and gave him a ticket. That’s just bad!
    MsNeat99:
Littering is against the law. If you break that law, you’re a “littler bug”, and have to pay the fine. You bring that onto yourself! The law is there to deter people from littering and to keep our environment clean.
    LittleBug 88:
Well, I’m against this whole Clean Hong Kong campaign as it just doesn’t work! There’s still litter everywhere!
    TidyBunny:
What’s the Clean Hong Kong campaign?
    MsNeat99:
The government started it to make Hong Kong cleaner. It’s now illegal to litter or spit in public places. The campaign includes posters and television advertisements to educate people about the law and encourage them to keep Hong Kong clean.
    TidyBunny:
I think the campaign is a great idea. I always pick up after myself and try to keep all public places clean.
    MsNeat99:
I really support this campaign too. It’s important to keep our public spaces clean, otherwise diseases can spread quickly, and we can get very sick.
    LittleBug 88:
I know a clean environment is important, but the campaign just isn’t effective. After all, people still litter and spit in public spaces.
    TidyBunny:
If you aren’t worried about the fine, then you’ll litter. But as long as some people are worried about the fine, they won’t litter. The fine works if it prevents some people from making public spaces dirty.
    MsNeat99:
I agree! The campaign works if it helps keep public spaces cleaner. Hong Kong would be much dirtier without the campaign!
    TidyBunny:
People need to know it’s important to keep Hong Kong clean.
    LittleBug88:
But what can I do? I can’t clean up Hong Kong clean!
    TidyBunny:
Everyone needs to do their part. If everyone cleaned up after themselves, the environment would be a lot cleaner.
    LittleBug88:
Yes, but many people still think it’s harmless if they just throw small things on the ground. I’ve seen people drop sweet wrappers on the ground when they tink no one is looking.
    MsNeat99:
We need to be aware that small things add up to big things when many people do it! Keeping public spaces clean benefits everyone.
    TidyBunny:
Maybe the fine will help some people see that littering or spitting isn’t so harmless!
    LittleBug88:
It’s helped my dad to see that. He will definitely think twice before littering again. A $1500 fine isn’t harmless!

73.At first, ________ is (are) against the Clean Hong Kong campaign.A.LittleBug 88 B.MsNeat99
    C.TidyBunny and LittleBug88 D.MsNeat99 and TidyBunny
74.The underlined word “deter” in Line 4 means “________”.

    Andy’s South American ______
March 16th, 6 p.m. Today is our last day in La Paz, the capital of Bolivia. Tomorrow Max and I are going to Coroico, a town about 60 kilometers from here. We’re taking a bus along the North Yungas Road, also known as “Death Road”. It goes along steep hillsides and cliffs. People call it the most dangerous road in the world! There are hundreds of accidents on it every year.
March 17th, 9 a.m. I’ve found out more about the North Yungas Road. It’s only about 3 meters wide, and in some parts there’s drop of at least 600 meters. That’s more than half a kilometer! There’s no barrier (屏障) along the side of the road. And there’s often rain or fog, which makes it even more dangerous.
I found out another thing. Here in Bolivia, they drive on the right side of the road. But on the North Yungas Road, they drive on the left. Why? Because this means that the drive on the dangerous side of the road can see the edge of the road more easily. The driver’s seat is on the left side of the bus, so the driver is close to the edge. Our bus leaves in one hour!

    Mapping out the future

Last summer, my parents and I took a drive to another state. Before we started on our road trip, we packed up the car with snacks, water, and music. Thankfully, we also packed our GPS. A few hours into the trip, we took a wrong turn. But our trusty GPS pulled up a map of the area and got us back or track in no time. It made me wonder: Who created maps in the first place? After some searching online, I learned that the people responsible for mapping out roads, mountains, oceans, and other places around the world are called cartographers. I did some reading about the career. Here’s what I found:
    What does a cartographer do?
Cartographers, also called mapmakers, study and interpret(诠释)geographic information. They use this information to make detailed maps of places around the globe. Some of these maps are digital. They are often used in GPS systems. Other maps are printed in books. To do their work, cartographers put together information from many different places. They also use ground surveys. Some do ground surveys themselves. Most cartographers, however, rely on surveyors for this important information. Surveyors collect information for mapmaking. They measure land, air space, and water areas.
What does it take to be a cartographer?
Most cartographers have a bachelors(学士) degree. The degree might be in cartography, geography, or something similar. Students who are interested in becoming cartographers should learn as much as they can about geography. It also helps to take courses in maths and computer science.
With the rise of computer-based tools such as GPS systems, cartographers need stronger computer skills than they did in the past.
    How much do cartographers make?
The average yearly salary for cartographers is $54,000. The lowest 10 percent earns less than $32,000. The top 10 percent cams more than $92,000.
    ________
In the U.S., job opportunities for cartographers are expected to grow. This is due to the increasing use of maps in the armed forces. Also, digital maps have increasingly become a main part of many GPS systems and Web sites.
Based on what I’ve read about cartographers, I’d say that their work is very important to a lot of people. Next time a map keeps me from getting lost. I’ll be sure to thank a cartographer!
157.In Para 1, the author included his experience in order to _______.
A.prove that a GPS is only needed when driving to another place
B.show that it is important to pack snacks for a trip
    C.provide a reason why a mapmaker’s work is important
D.show that the GPS is not always reliable
158.The author talked about cartographers from ________ aspects.
    A.three B.four C.five D.six
159.Surveyors can do all these following things except _________.
    A.do ground surveys B.collect information
C.do some mapping D.do some measuring
160.Elizabeth begins working as a cartographer with a starting salary of $34,000. Every year, her salary increases by $1,500. If she continues in this position, her salary will be _________ for her 12th year of work.
A.of the lowest 10 percent B.of the top 10 percent
    C.of average D.below average
    161.What best fits the blank?
    A.Will more cartographers be needed?
B.Will the cartographers be replaced by robots?
C.Why is it hard for cartographers to find jobs?
D.Why do cartographers make different maps?
162.The article would be most useful as a source for a student research project on _________.
    A.influential jobs for computermen

Imagine if your journey to work was from your bedroom to your living room. More and more people in the UK are doing their jobs at home.
Baz works as an engineer in a West London factory. He’s been an engineer since he left school - but he’s not very optimistic about his future. Heavy industry in the UK has almost disappeared. More people work in Indian restaurants than in steel, coal and shipbuilding put together! Baz also often gets tired of his long journey to work. Whether he travels by car or by public transport, it can take up to two hours a day.
His sister, Liz, lives in the north of England. She’s an Information Technology (IT) trainer at a college. Once every four weeks, she meets her trainees in person, but most of her training is done through IT.
Baz’s wife, Helen, seldom travels to work at all. She’s a graphic designer for a London advertising company. Once she’s got the children off to school, she starts work in front of her computer screen. She’s currently designing publicity material for a major London festival. When she’s finished her designs, she sends them electronically to her director. He works from home too - occasionally they meet up for a coffee.
Most people in the UK, like Baz, spend hours travelling to work - and complain about it, too. But an increasing number of people work as telecommuters, like Helen or Liz. Almost all of their work is done online or by phone. There are a million telecommuters in the UK, about 10 percent of the workforce.

CIMON 2 is a floating computer assistant. It was sent to the International Space Station (ISS) on December 5th, 2019. It was designed to work there for three years to help astronauts.
Actually, the International Space Station is a science lab in space. Now there are six people there. Usually astronauts stay in the ISS for five or six months. Can you imagine how boring it is to live in a tight space with just five other people for six months?
So CIMON was created with two jobs in mind. One is helping astronauts with tasks. The other is trying to be "someone" astronauts can talk to. CIMON stands for Crew Interactive Mobile (互动移动) Companion. It is a robot with a face which was created by the European airplane company, Airbus. It has no arms or legs, but it can move where it needs to go with motors inside. Helping astronauts is easy for CIMON—it can see, hear, understand, and speak. Its "mouth" is a loudspeaker that can be used to talk or play music. The brain behind CIMON were provided by IBM, a computer company famous for training computers to understand human speech. CIMON can understand not just what people say, but what they mean. If astronauts ask it for instructions or information, CIMON can answer the astronauts, or use its screen to display pictures or documents, if needed. In addition, CIMON has several cameras, which can take pictures and videos to help astronauts keep records of experiments or other important actions.
The more difficult part of CIMON's job is being a companion for the astronauts. The first CIMON could understand what people were saying and mastered more than 1000 sentences, but it was limited. In one video, taken with German astronaut Alexander Gerst, CIMON seemed to become confused as Mr. Gerst spoke with another astronaut. "Don't be so mean, please," CIMON said.
CIMON 2 has been improved so that it can recognize emotions and find out how people are feeling. The goal for CIMON is to be a calm, trusted friend that astronauts can talk to when they don't want to talk with others. This could be especially important if tension (紧张气氛) in a group of astronauts causes them to stop thinking clearly.
235.CIMON 2 planned to stay in the International Space Station for _______.
    A.five months B.six months C.three years D.two years
    236.CIMON was created _______.
A.for Crew Interactive Mobile Companion B.for the European airplane company, Airbus
C.to do a lot of research of IBM D.to make friends with astronauts
237.CIMON is very intelligent, and it can do all the following things except _______.
A.moving here and there B.training computers to understand people
C.taking pictures and videos D.understanding what people are saying
238.The underlined word "companion" in the 4th paragraph means a friend who _______.
A.works and lives with astronauts B.has the similar tastes, interests, etc.
    C.runs a company D.is responsible for astronauts
239.Compared with the first CIMON, CIMON 2 has the advantage of _______.
A.becoming confused with others' talk B.understanding people's feelings
C.having limited expressions D.keeping calm all the time
240.According to the last paragraph, creators hope that CIMON can _______.
A.float in space for a long time B.help astronauts with their tasks
C.use its "mouth" to talk or play music D.help people stay calm and make good decisions

    D=Detective Ken, W=Wilson
D: So, Wilson. What do you believe happened here?
W: It’s simple, isn’t it? A thief climbed in through the window and stole the painting!
D: Maybe. Or maybe that’s just what somebody wants us to think.
W: What do you mean, Ken?
D: Well, let’s look at the evidence. Starting at the window. Now, look outside. What can you see?
W: A flower bed with some roses.
D: Exactly. A flower bed. And the ground—is it dry or wet?
W: It must be quite wet—we’ve had a lot of rain recently.
D: But there are no footprints in the flower bed! How is it possible that the thief walks across the flower bed to the window without leaving footprints?
    W: Er…no.
D: It isn’t! It isn’t possible, Wilson! What we’re dealing with here is … a set up! Somebody has arranged the room to look as if a burglary has taken place. Look at the coffee table. What do you notice?
    W: It’s got a footstool on top.
D: Why has it got a footstool on top?
W: Because the thief wanted to climb up…
D: There was no thief, Wilson! But look how carefully the footstool was put on top of the coffee table. There isn’t a scratch! A thief wouldn’t be so careful.
W: No, I see what you mean.
D: Who would be so careful, Wilson? Think about it!
    W: Er…it’s…I suppose…
D: The owner of the table! He wouldn’t want to damage it, would he?
    W: No, no. He wouldn’t want to…
D: So the owner of the table—the owner of Riverford Manor—has arranged everything in this room to look like a Burglary. But the burglary didn’t happen.
W: So, where’s the oil painting?
D: That’s what we need to find out! And I think ________.
