(2018·全国Ⅲ)
Cities usually have a good reason for being where they are, like a nearby port or river.People settle in these places because they are easy to get to and naturally suited to communications and trade.New York City, forexample,is near a large harbour at the mouth of the Hudson River.Over 300 years its population grew gradually from 800 people to 8 million. But not all cities develop slowly over a long period of time.Boom towns grow from nothing almost overnight. In 1896,Dawson,Canada,was unmapped wilderness(荒野).But gold was discovered there in 1897,and two years later,it was one of the largest cities in the West, with a population of 30,000.
Dawson did not have any of the natural conveniences of cities like London or Paris.People went there for gold. They travelled over snow-covered mountains and sailed hundreds of miles up icy rivers. The path to Dawson was covered with thirty feet of wet snow that could fall without warning. An avalanche(雪崩) once closed the path, killing 63 people. For many who made it to Dawson, however, the rewards were worth the difficult trip.Of the first 20,000 people who dug for gold,4,000 got rich.About 100 of these stayed rich men for the rest of their lives.
But no matter how rich they were,Dawson was never comfortable.Necessities like food and wood were very expensive.Butsoon, the gold that Dawson depended on had all been found. The city was crowded with disappointed people with no interest in settling down, and when they heard there were new gold discoveries in Alaska, they left Dawson City as quickly as they had come.Today, people still come and go — to see where the Canadian gold rush happened.Tourism is now the chief industry of Dawson City — its present population is 762.

It is said that once most people leave school they make the decision that their learning days are over. Most of them will seldom ever read another non-fiction book, therefore missing out on one of the greatest resources for boosting(推进) their career goals. They don’t realize that reading and constant learning will keep them mentally alert(警觉的) and younger, their memory will improve, they’ll be more decisive, smarter and quicker.Inshort, constant learning is considered one of the most important success skills.
And reading books about a specific subject that is of interest to you regarding your career can give you an added bonus! When you study and learn more about a favourite topic you give your confidence a boost. You can very quickly become an authority in the field.Another tip is to try to read material written by someone with hands-on experience in the field, rather than just theory. The same thing goes for seminars or courses. The person who has hands-on experience has a lot more to offer you.
By now you’re probably saying “But I just don’t have the time to read any books!”Well, one way would be to reduce the amount of time you spend reading the newspaper or watching TV.Or you could get up a half hour earlier each day to read undisturbed and,as Brian Tracy says,“milk the golden hour”.
But by far the most powerful way of finding the time to learn is making your car your “college on wheels”.We all know that we spend thousands of hours a year driving to and from work. Most people will listen to the radio. But what if you took this time to listen to books on tape?Or what if you listened to tapes on your subjects of interest by experts in the field?By the end of the year you could have the equivalent(对等物) of 2 college terms!Another added bonus of listening to tapes in your car is that the stress of the drive will decrease and you’ll actually arrive feeling more refreshed and relaxed.
Careful though, you can become addicted to this successful habit! So start now. It’s never too late to study!
